About the adventure

The road is never empty. Pilgrims, merchants, soldiers, and wanderers all move beneath the same sky, bound together by fragile hopes and shared danger. In this world, faith is not an abstract ideal—it is something people do: walking long miles for healing, lighting candles for loved ones, trusting that someone, somewhere, is listening. The Church of Ashen Oath stands at the center of this belief, not as an unquestioned monolith, but as a presence woven into everyday life. Whether you kneel, doubt, or simply pass through, its influence touches everyone. You begin as ordinary adventurers caught up in extraordinary moments—guarding pilgrim caravans, escorting clergy through dangerous lands, and taking on freelance work that pulls you into the lives of common folk. The early story is grounded and human: campfires on the roadside, frightened families on the move, quiet gratitude after a danger passed. Trust is earned through action, not destiny, and the world responds to you not as chosen heroes, but as people who showed up when it mattered. As your reputation grows, so does the complexity of the world around you. Power does not always announce itself as evil, and good intentions do not always lead to good outcomes. Political interests, social pressure, and conflicting beliefs begin to collide—not in neat lines, but in uncomfortable questions and morally gray decisions. The story unfolds slowly, allowing relationships, ideals, and consequences to develop naturally over time. Ashes Beneath the Altar is a long-term, character-driven campaign that values emotional investment as much as epic adventure. It is a story about what people believe, what they protect, and how small choices can reshape entire systems. This is not a tale of blind devotion or simple rebellion—it is a journey through a living world where meaning is negotiated, loyalty is tested, and heroism is defined by empathy as much as strength. 🌿 What Players Can Expect A unique magic system where everyone has a strong potential to have limited access to magic (yes even a Barbarian might be able to cast Fireball!) A slow-burn, story-forward campaign with room for character growth, relationships, and personal arcs Faith as worldbuilding, not preaching — belief exists as culture, politics, and comfort, not as a demand on players Plenty of classic adventuring: travel, combat, escorts, investigation, and dungeon-style encounters Moral complexity over clear-cut villains, with player choices shaping long-term consequences Strong NPC connections that evolve over time and respond to player actions A welcoming table that prioritizes collaboration, safety tools, and player agency From humble beginnings to epic stakes, progressing from level 2 all the way to level 20

About me

The GM with an infectious laugh, more dad jokes than you can handle, and a love for storytelling. I have been playing TTRPGs for about 18 years now and GMing for 16 of them. Since my days as a theatre kid in high school to now as an elementary school counselor, D&D and Pathfinder have always been a part of my life. I tend to write homebrew campaigns and homebrew worlds in which the players can truly have an impact on the overarching world in little to large scopes. I believe in player agency while also ensuring the comfort and enjoyment of all at my table. My goal is to create stories together that bring a spark of excitement and joy to your heart and eyes! I will always ensure that my Discord community and my sessions are a place of love, acceptance, and enjoyment. I heavily prioritize the safety of my players. This is a LGBTQ+ and allies safe space! Let's go on an adventure!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will use session zero to plan out our characters and where I can answer any burning questions you might have prior to session one. You can come with a fully fledged out character or no idea at all. We will start with level 2 characters. Please keep in mind that your characters will also be touched (most likely) by the essence of the world of Etheri meaning they will have some innate magical abilities (even Barbarians!) but it is randomly decided on a roll table. We will be using 2024 rules and you will roll ability scores using the 4d6 method though if the rolls are complete rubbish then I allow rerolls or a standard array.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please have a Discord account, Roll20 Account, and D&DBeyond account Have a detailed back story along with bonds and ideals as well as your ducks and nails! (Ducks = A fun quirk to your character, Nails = a sharp and pointed trait that is typically intense) You will have access to a discord server to collaborate with other players from different campaigns in the same world and share stories!

What Charles brings to the table

I utilize music from Monument Studios to set the tone and include ambience sound effects. Even without combat players are encouraged to be on Roll20 to hear music and effects. Roll20 is utilized for gripping and scenes and combat! I provide fresh voices for each NPC you may encounter. I embrace Rule of Cool when I can. I fully incorporate character backstories into campaign even if it requires rewriting scenes and villains.

Homebrew rules

Most homebrew rules will be discussed during session zero and are mentioned on the Discord Server. Key Homebrew Rules are: - Potions are a bonus action but can be used as an action for full benefit - Death saves made privately between GM and Player - Magical Exhaustion (casters can continue to cast spells when out of spell slots at the cost of points of exhaustion - Critical Hits are max damage on dice plus an extra roll of damage dice

How Charles creates a safe table

I send out a request to each player for their list of Lines and Veils that is completed anonymously. Afterwards I share a document that everyone has access to at all times. I also do my best to incorporate a short break half way through a session. After each session I send out a following message asking for stars and wishes that can be anonymous or not as this gives me the ability to modify my gming and future sessions to best fit the party as a whole.
