About the adventure

Listen up, berk — in Sigil, you can dodge taxes, skip rent, and ignore half the factions, but you can’t sidestep the Blood War forever. Live in the Cage long enough and some fiend, factotum, or desperate sod will rope you into a job that brushes the edges of that eternal scrap. Maybe you’re hauling a crate through a dodgy portal, maybe you're “just escorting a witness,” or maybe you're breaking up a bar brawl between a balor and a pit fiend who swear they’re “off duty.” Sure they are. See, the War doesn’t have to go barmy to be dangerous. It’s always there — grinding away in the Lower Planes, spilling into the Outlands, and nudging Sigil’s shadows in ways most cutters pretend not to notice. One job turns into another, then another, and before you know it the baatezu know your name, the tanar’ri want a word, and the yugoloths are offering you contracts in that oily smile of theirs. You ain’t special yet, but you’re on their radar — and that’s how it starts. Your work might begin small: courier runs, information trades, sabotage gigs. But every choice pushes you deeper into the gears of the multiverse’s oldest feud. And the chant is this, basher: the Blood War changes everyone who touches it. By the time you're knee-deep in infernal politics, someone will whisper that you’ve done enough to shift a battlefront, save a legion, doom a fortress, or tilt some fiendish scheme off balance. That’s when you realize the War hasn’t gone strange — you have. And soon enough, you’ll be playing a part in a turn of events the fiends never saw coming. Together in Session 0, we’ll set the tone, style, and kind of tales you want to chase in this campaign. Then I’ll forge your saga using the Daggerheart system, shaping an open-planar story worthy of legend — one stamped by your deeds and forever marked in the Blood War’s endless ledger.

About me

Hello! I'm DM Mat, a game master with over 35 years of experience behind the screen. I started with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and have played through every era up to D&D 5e 2024. Over the decades I’ve run countless stories across many worlds — from grim mysteries to wild planar adventures to hilarious improv-driven chaos. I really enjoy a wide cast of pro DMs, but Chris Perkins and Acquisitions Incorporated stand out to me: energetic, improvisational, character-driven, and always adapted to the tone of the table. Sessions can be serious, heroic, comedic, dark, or a mix — whatever brings out the most fun for the group. I run one-shots, long campaigns, play-by-post games, sandbox explorations, West Marches, and reimagined official modules like Curse of Strahd, Storm King’s Thunder, Tomb of Annihilation, Descent into Avernus, Rise of the Runelords, Kingmaker, and Age of Worms. I also love Eberron, Planescape, Faerûn, and fully homebrew worlds. I mostly run games in French or English as suits the current party. In my games, both newcomers and seasoned heroes are equally welcome. I can also run games for your group or a private event — just inquire, we acquire. Above all, my tables are respectful, collaborative, and focused on shared enjoyment. If you love exploration, memorable characters, surprising twists, and a relaxed but immersive atmosphere, I’d be happy to welcome you to the adventure.

Character creation

Creating your character

Game Format: Live (FoundryVTT) or Play-By-Post (Discord) You may create your character using Demiplane Nexus (book access available). Once complete, I’ll import it into FoundryVTT, which will be our primary character sheet during play. For Play-By-Post games, character creation happens asynchronously and collaboratively before play begins. For live games, we may also create characters together during Session 1 if the group prefers. System & Starting Level: System: Daggerheart Starting Level: Level 1 Players are encouraged to share 2–3 character ideas, collaborate on bonds and shared history, and connect their characters to the campaign’s themes. We’ll cover tone, expectations, and safety tools either in a Session 0 or at the start of the first session, then jump straight into the adventure.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account for between session communications, and for Voice in session. For Play-by-post, you will not need to access Foundry VTT and it is possible to play only with a mobile phone on Discord. Else for Live sessions then the game will be run on Foundry VTT. If you have a Demiplane - Nexus account, then I can share you the Daggerheart book should you need it.

What DM Mat brings to the table

This campaign is mostly Theater of the Mind, with imagery to open your imagination. Some grid might be used for clarity when appropriate and when we need to go full tactical! I usually don't play with webcam, if all the group prefer to play with webcam, we can turn it on for online sessions.

Homebrew rules

This game will incorporate some special rules to make it more in tune with the tone of the setting.
