About the adventure

Brave the dark wood, beware the witching hour, and help weave your own dreadful folktale beneath the leering grin of the Crooked Moon. In the eternal twilight of Druskenvald—a cursed demiplane where the living and restless dead coexist—you and your wayward souls board the spectral Ghostlight Express, only to be stranded in fog-shrouded Wickermoor Hollow amid superstitious villagers clinging to the Old Ways and horrors lurking in endless night. This 600-page 5E folk horror masterpiece (levels 1-13, with epic postgame to 20) draws from eerie folklore, chilling films like The Wicker Man and The Witch, and Halloween nightmares, arming you with 15 haunting subclasses (Sinner Rogue's jinxcraft curses, Horned King Warlock), 13 reborn lineages (pumpkin-headed Harvestborn, gnarled treefolk Gnarlborn), Fateweaving to bind backstories to doom, 85 folkloric monsters, and 120+ chaotic Twists of Dread. (you do not have to use any of the setting material to create your character, unless you perish!) Also let it be known that I often change things as needed from the Campaign material and see the pre-written campaign as something to build from. Perfect for D&D veterans and newcomers craving immersive terror over heroic fantasy, The Crooked Moon challenges you with moral quandaries where friend blurs into foe, ritualistic investigations demand cunning over swords, and 11 multi-phase boss fights test tactics amid isolation's twisted violence—yet rewards survival with leveling artifacts, dark bargains for otherworldly power, player-driven fates, and tools to haunt your table like never before. You will enjoy this Campaign if you know part of D&D is the struggle, and you are okay with not being an unstoppable Hero. Your choices will absolutely matter whether you succeed or fail both as an individual and as a group. Having a couple of ideas of character class/subclass you might play will help to form a better all around party that is better equipped to survive. About me

Hello! My name is Matt. I am a 37 year old Family Man, who enjoys the outdoors, and doing yard work. I enjoy Video Games when time permits, but especially love D&D 5e with the easy to run rule set. I am a homebody for the most part, and like to enjoy life on the easy side. I enjoy people that have a sense of humor, dark or regular. I don't judge people, and I get along with my nerdy types of friends more than anyone else. I tend to think I am easy to get along with, and a good social moderator. I don't do social media, but I have a Discord and am active there for online friends or players.

Age: Characters must be the equivalent of 18 years old or older, no child characters. Optional Features are allowed Fixed HP Level 1 (milestone) 2014 or 2024 class/subclass/race rules (your choice), Choose a Fate Create simple backstory of who your character was/what/when it was living (a paragraph or two is all that is required)

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Have several ideas of what roles you would be willing to play in order to make the team stronger as a whole. Create a base character with the Standard Array/Point Buy and create a simple backstory of what their life was like before this Campaign. Using Firefox, or Chrome download the Beyond20 Extension as it allows seamless rolls from your character sheet to Roll20 from D&D Beyond. We will use Discord for further character development and I am very responsive there.

What Matt of Woe brings to the table

I have the Crooked Moon and other content Shared on D&D Beyond A well maintained Discord Server I do some Voices, and provide plenty of opportunity for characters to roleplay. Combat can get very gritty and will be a challenge to overcome but extremely rewarding. Beginners will have several sessions where they will have a "mulligan" where I explain their actions and what may happen and give them a chance to change it. After several sessions the training wheels come off, and consequences return. This does not mean that the combat will be easier because of this, so if you are new consider bringing on someone experienced to help you survive. I often send private messages or drag people to separate hidden voice channels if there is something only they saw, heard, or witness so that they and the party will need to role play if they want to share the information. I find this creates a more tense atmosphere and encourages role playing naturally. Also let it be known that I often change things as needed from the Campaign material and see the written campaign as something to build from, and meant to be altered.

Homebrew rules

This is a horror campaign, requiring all characters to deal with the aspects of night that instill fear in humanity can increase the tension and dread. Creeping Dark. Characters who benefit from racial darkvision find this trait suppressed, though magic that grants darkvision such as from a spell or magic item still functions., Non-magical Light. Non Magical Light is severely impacted, while magical light is affected less. All non magical Light Sources only produce half of what they normally would, and magical sources may be less bright., Sanity & Madness. As your characters progress through the Horror style content in this Campaign they will witness things that are more terrifying than what a typical Campaign brings. This brings unique roleplaying opportunity as well as an extra layer of mechanical challenges to a Campaign theme filled with Horrific scenes., Land of Shadow. Magics involving healing or energy of Light or Fire are underwhelming, while those of Shadow and darkness may be overwhelming. Meant to be Difficult. Use items, and healing sparingly and only when needed. Short Rests may happen fairly regularly, but long rests only happen when the party would naturally sleep., Consumables. Using a Health Potion or Similar consumable during combat will require a Bonus Action, using one on someone else is a Full Action., Lingering Affects. Diseases, Poisons, and Afflictions alike may last longer than normally stated in typical D&D Campaigns/Rules. Planning ahead with spells, salves, and other means of curing yourselves can make or break your success in this Campaign., Survival of the Fittest. You will start the game with only specific items your Background gave you but no other Adventuring Equipment/Armor/Weapons/Gold. When you Died your soul attached to the one magical item you chose for your character so choose your magic item wisely, as well as your background! (some come with weapons, others with artisan tools, or unique items your spirit may be attached to), Spells cast! Material Components are not required for low level spells, however certain spells considered very powerful may still require them. (DM Discretion) Flanking. Both Player Characters and NPC/Monsters gain a Flanking bonus of +2 to hit if you can draw a line from any edge of their token through an enemy to an adjacent ally., Slow Natural Healing. You do not full heal at the end of a long rest. Instead you may heal with any remaining Hit Die from the previous day, then you must tap into the new day's hit die if you need more health and want to spend your hit die in order to cap your health., Inspiration You may only ever have one Inspiration. You may use it yourself or give it to another party member to use. You cannot use Inspiration twice on the same roll. and more in the Discord!

Safety

How Matt of Woe creates a safe table

I am not here to be your psychologist, teach, or protect you. If you have triggers these are things you will have to deal with on your own. I expect that adults know what they are signing up for when playing D&D which has War, Death, and many Uncomfortable situations. This game is not for you if you are needing counseling.
