How Matt of Woe runs games

I have played TTRPGs since I was a young teenager (14) with various rule sets, including homemade ones. (about 24 years) I have been playing D&D off and on for 9 years and DMing for 5+ years. I like to think I have a good balance between Combat, Exploration, and Roleplay. Everyone I have played the role of DM for has come back for more thus far, and my past games randomly come up in conversations randomly in a very positive light. If it doesn't break the game for others, I will go with the "rule of cool", However try to generally play the game by RAW, and let the Dice help tell the story. I am experienced with giving time for each individual and make sure they have a turn before moving forward if possible, but also know when and how to help the slowest of them speed things up. I get along very well with most everyone and often love watching people progress their characters in D&D as much as the players themselves. I often customize the game to cater more to the players, even sometimes making home brew items, and adventure hooks to incorporate each character. That being said, I am really good at balancing encounters and you'll need to play it smart in combat to live during battles that are considered decisive to the Campaigns. Players that know that Heroes are not created when you make your character sheet, but are forged through trials that bring them to the brink before they overcome them. Players that know that a good game comes with ups and downs, and that a story has deep conflict. A player that can watch a character die, and bounce back and re-roll for the next session and carry on to the end. A player that likes that their choices actually matter, both tactically and when role playing. A player that knows sticking closely to RaW makes favoritism harder, and letting the dice help tell the story without DM interdiction is actual D&D. Rule of Cool may happen, but more often than not it will happen in a way that does not affect core gameplay for others. D&D should feel like a Story told by both DM and players, but not controlled by either party more than the dice.
