About the adventure

Welcome to Khorvaire, the land of magically powered lightning rails and airships that connect Sharn, the fabled City of Towers, with the rest of the continent. Dragonmarked warriors will lead the fight against daelkyr-warped monstrosities. Kalashtar wizards will cast spells from ancient dragonshards to strengthen the wards that constrain the long-chained Overlords. Changeling rogues will explore the long-abandoned, cyclopean ruins of yore, abandoned by the elves' giant masters in forgotten ages past. This campaign, which will allow the heroes to explore the forgotten corners of the world of Eberron, is simple enough to appeal to new D&D players but multifaceted and rich enough to make experienced grognards smile. A careful blend of roleplaying intrigue and dice-chucking combat, the stories of this campaign will span the entire world of Eberron and will provide whatever type of story the players want to see. Ancient magic? Khyber-powered technology? Political intrigue that leads to continent-spanning war? It's all in here. I try to avoid predetermined stories in my games and urge the players to share their characters' goals so that the plot revolves around them and their quests. Bring your hopes to the game, and I'll do my best to make them real!

About me

I have been playing (mostly DMing) tabletop roleplaying games since roughly 1985 and have never found an activity that I enjoy more. Not just a D&D aficionado (though I have played every edition of that game), I have significant experience with at least 20 roleplaying systems, ranging from sci-fi to horror. A former teacher, I excel at describing settings, explaining rules, and making those at my table comfortable. I try to keep things appropriately serious, when the situation calls for it, but mostly I aim to make sure everyone's smiling and having a good time, so expect to laugh at my table. Though I prefer to play in person, I have run and played in several online games and know how to make sure the technology keeps up with the fun of the game. I can't wait to see some new faces at the table!

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created in a free Session 0, using the 2024 5e rules, including the use of Eberron: Forge of the Artificer sourcebook for 2024 rules. If all the players are experienced with 5e rules, we will likely start at 3rd level, otherwise 1st. Character creation will include the standard array for attributes, and I will ask all players to develop backstories and goals between Sessions 0 and 1.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will use D&D Beyond Maps for the tabletop, combined with Google Meet for communication. Webcam preferred though not required. The D&D Beyond campaign ability to share books is likely to come in handy, which is another reason for players to have an account there.

What Oliver brings to the table

I will walk through character creation with the players in a free Session 0. All options in the D&D 5e 2024 rules and Eberron: Forge of the Artificer are fair game (no pun intended). If players don't have access to one or the other of those sources, I am happy to share access through the D&D Beyond site. I enjoy tactical combat and do my best to avoid battles that are a simply a race to 0 hit points. Although I do love rules, I do my best to use the Rule of Cool whenever possible. I try to be a fan of the heroes and want them to do cool things! You can expect some voices and some character in NPC roleplaying, as I like to flex my own roleplaying muscles as much as possible. I enjoy intrigue and subtle plots, but it's also important that the players understand what's happening and what comes next, which means the occasional cinematic cut-away to the Evil Mastermind's lair, for example, to make the story make sense. I like player characters who have secrets, but those secrets only matter if the players know about them. Thus, I don't pass notes are keep separate players, even if their characters are in the dark. I expect the roleplaying to take over from there.

Homebrew rules

I use maximum hit points at all levels for PCs, rather than just first level. I like the survivability that grants. A Natural 20 outside of combat gives that player Inspiration. This encourages non-combat rolls and allows players to use the inspiration more frequently, as they know they'll get it back.

Safety

How Oliver creates a safe table

In Session 0, we will discuss lines and veils, to make sure I know where the limits are. We will also use virtual X, N, and O cards, basically just by typing the letter into the chat sending it to me privately.
