About the adventure

Welcome to a learn to play session of Vaesen, the Nordic Horror RPG from Free League Publishing. We will be diving into the starter set adventure, The Haunting of Castle Gyllencreutz. This game is perfect for those new to Vaesen or to roleplaying in general. You will step into the Mythic North of the 19th century, a world where Gothic gloom meets ancient folklore. As members of the enigmatic Society, you are one of the few who can see the Vaesen: vengeful spirits and magical creatures. A desperate cry for help draws you to a remote castle, where a sinister presence stirs within the ancient stones. This session is designed to teach you everything you need to know. We will cover the core rules including skills, talents, and the perilous conflict system as we play. No preparation is needed. Pre-generated characters and dice will be provided. Just bring your curiosity and courage. Are you ready to face what lurks in the dark?

About me

I'm a GM, teacher, and improv nerd who runs collaborative, character-driven games. I believe the best RPG stories are forged by the whole table, not written by one person. My background in teaching and improv helps me craft worlds full of heart and humor where your choices truly matter. My goal is to create a fun, inclusive space where we can build something truly epic together.

Character creation

Creating your character

Pregenerated characters will be provided for this learn to play session. These ready to play investigators have their own strengths, secrets, and ties to the supernatural. I can share the character sheets ahead of time for those who wish to look them over. This is completely optional. No preparation is needed. Just come ready to explore the haunting of Castle Gyllencreutz and learn the rules together.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Do not worry about preparing anything for this game. Pregenerated characters, dice, and all other play materials will be provided for you at the session. If you'd like, you are welcome to bring your own dice. Vaesen uses only six sided dice (D6s), so please bring at least ten of them if you do. While not required, I will also share some brief reference material before we meet for anyone who wants a sneak peek at the world. You can simply show up ready to play

What Drew DiSario brings to the table

I provide all play materials for you. This includes the rulebooks, five pre-generated characters, dice, and all the physical handouts from the starter set like the Codex Occultum, full color maps, reference cards, and initiative cards. I also use music and ambience to build a tense, immersive atmosphere.

Homebrew rules

For this introductory session, we will use the Vaesen rules as written. Our focus is on learning the core system together. That said, the final call is always the Game Master's, and we may make situational rulings to keep the story compelling and the action flowing.

How Drew DiSario creates a safe table

CONFIDENTIAL PRE-GAME CHECK-IN: Upon joining, you will receive an optional, confidential Google Form to privately share your Lines, Veils, and any other preferences to help me tailor the experience. SHARED TABLE EXPECTATIONS: We will use the first part of our session for character creation and to establish our group's play environment. This is our time to build your heroes and discuss community norms or expectations beyond the pre-game forms. Your comfort is a priority. While this is a horror game, the content will be appropriate for new players. Before we begin, we will have a brief check in to discuss lines, veils, and tone. A confidential player preferences form is also available before the session. We will take breaks as needed. An open door policy is in effect during play, and we will use the X card system if necessary. After the game, I invite everyone to stay for a quick debrief to decompress and share feedback.
