About the adventure

Rangers of the New Republic (yeah, I nabbed the title from a cancelled Star Wars show, since it fit) is set during the era of the New Republic, around the time of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, etc., and will focus on an investigation into a conspiracy jeopardizing the security and stability of not only the galaxy, but history itself. The PCs will be venturing around the galaxy, investigating various leads and uncovering more pieces to the overall puzzle. I intend for there to be a reasonably balanced mix of social encounters, combat, and some puzzles here and there, with most difficult situations having more than one possible solution. As far as what the characters are/are like, as the title would suggest, the PCs are New Republic Rangers, basically the New Republic group equivalent of a Wild West sheriff who responds to calls for help from people on the frontier – in other words, they're effectively mercenaries in the employ of the New Republic, sent to investigate threats to the Republic and protect its citizens (which means that they have regular pay, provided they don’t go off-mission and/or do criminal things that would reflect poorly on the Ranger Corps).

About me

I’ve been GMing for several years now, having run and successfully concluded multiple campaigns, almost all of which can be viewed in their entirety on my YouTube channel, if you’re interested in a sample of how I do what I do. The three main systems I play are Alien: The Roleplaying Game, Twilight: 2000 4E, and Fantasy Flight Games/Edge’s Star Wars RPG, and I have sufficient knowledge of, and experience with, all of them as both a GM and a player.

Character creation

Creating your character

- Character creation can be done independently or, if assistance is required, with my help. All official content (from the three game books and all relevant supplements) is fair game. - Due to the nature of the game, characters won’t have any Obligation/Duty/etc. (and therefore cannot take extra starting cash the normal way), though to compensate, each PC starts with a total of 3,000 credits (so 500 start + 2.5k extra). - I’m okay with Force users (though I’ll cap it at three total), caveat being that the characters would not be Jedi (and especially not Sith), since this is long after Order 66 killed the near-entirety of the Jedi Order. Yes, Luke Skywalker was rebuilding the Jedi Order from scratch, but that, to my knowledge, is a very recent project whose members wouldn’t be anywhere near as numerous as the Jedi were pre-Order 66. If any characters are Force sensitive, you’re basically in the same league as characters like Ahsoka and Ventress, who were no longer Jedi or Sith, and basically just followed their own moral codes and used their powers accordingly, which means you could be just a generic Force-sensitive person who somehow developed your abilities, or you could be something specific like a surviving Nightsister. - With the exception of droids (due to certain plot points that would exclude droid PCs from participating) and clones (because by this point in time, they’re all either deceased or in the same physical state as WW2 vets nowadays, and are simply not combat-capable in either case), all species from official content are allowed. - Unofficial species from fan supplements are allowed in theory, but I'd need to see what stat block you want to use before it's a definite "yes" or "no".

What to expect

Preparing for the session

- Discord account, with a working mic (and *ideally* one that isn't plagued by static or muffled or anything that would interfere in people's ability to understand you). Video cameras are not required. - Willingness to use Foundry VTT - it's not especially hard to get a hang of, and IMO, it blows Roll20 out of the water, though I recognize that some players are intimidated by it and I'm willing to help anyone who needs help getting adjusted to it. - Having a good attitude and, if available, sense of humor. Be ready to laugh a lot, because comedy is a recurring element in my campaigns, both in the plot itself and in the actions of the other players.

What Cody B. Gamin' brings to the table

For gameplay, we play on a Foundry VTT server that typically remains up for several days before and/or after each session, though if a player wishes to access it when it's switched over to another world (such as to make any changes to your character sheet), I'll do so if I'm online and not working on something else. As for what I offer to the table as a GM, I've been told - and I agree with the following - that some of my strengths include a good understanding of the rules, but being willing to bend them a bit in the interest of making the game more fun; providing players with a number of options for how to overcome challenges in most situations, rather than always bottlenecking them into a particular solution; and solid knowledge of any particular game setting and the ability to use it to tell a more engaging story that fits right in with that setting. I also encourage and reward creativity, outside-the-box strategies, and good senses of humor.

Safety

How Cody B. Gamin' creates a safe table

In my Discord server, there will be a rules channel that all players will have access to, that goes into detail on what is expected of players conduct-wise. If players ever have a problem with anything, whether it's content in the game, the way the game is run, the behavior of other players, etc., you're welcome to reach out to me privately during or after the game, or step away mid-session (and possibly return later on in the session) if that's what you wish to do.
