Creating your character
Characters will begin at level 1. We will decide as a group in session zero whether we will roll for stats or use the point buy method. Characters can be built during session zero or beforehand with guidance from the dungeon master.
Name: Basil Rayne Age: 28 Class: Rogue / Phantom Race: Earth Genasi Gender: Androgenous, Male leaning Pronouns: He/They Base Backstory: Basil was a man that society failed. Not able to keep a job in a harsh environment, Basil turned to petty theft to put food on the table. At one point they had gone weeks without eating, they were desperate stole some food from a local butcher and got caught. Basil took off into the woods narrowly escaping their pursuer, but losing their spoils along the way. They lied there starving in the forest when a kindly druid saved their life. Now they find themselves in Barovia. Basil embodies the idea of "the ends justify the means" & "surival at all costs". Name: Ithunn Dalvik Age: 26 Class: Druid / Circle of Spores Race: Firbolg Hexblood Gender: Androgenous/Unknown, feminine leaning Pronouns: She/They Base Backstory: Ithunn was from a small village off of the Sword Coast. She wandered into a nearby forest and stumbled into some kind of curse and got transformed into a Hexblood by the spirit of the woods. Her parents didn't recognize her following this transformation and thought she was a monster, so she was forced to live alone in the forest until one day she came across Basil, and was finally no longer alone. Base Personality: Ithunn has been in survival mode for over a decade. She is slow to trust, but loyal to the few she does trust, and she embodies the idea of "speak softly and carry a big stick." CONTENT WARNING: SUICIDE Name: Entropy Age: ?? Class: Wizard / Order of Scribes Race: Infernal Tiefling Gender: Androgenous, Male leaning Pronouns: He/They Base Backstory: For the longest time, Entropy had one prerogative in life: Survive. Raised in the Outlands, a kind of nexus into the greater DND Multiverse, Entropy spent the majority of his childhood in Ribcage, the gatetown leading into The Nine Hells, being tutored by his mentor, the arcanaloth Ezrahi. At some point in time, Ezrahi (supposedly) committed suicide or was otherwise killed after committing some unknown crime, leaving only his old spellbook behind. Entropy, fearing for his life, fled with the spellbook, whilst being chased by enforcers from various other gatetowns, before escaping through a portal into Barovia. After trimming down the contents of the spellbook into a far more manageable deck of cards, his new goal isn't to investigate his old master's death, but to find a new purpose altogether. Name: Theodore "Theo" Morwin Age: 36 Class: Bard / College of Glamour Race: Human Gender: Male Pronouns: He/Him Backstory: Theo is a traveling Bard who had dreams of becoming renown for his skill, but ultimately failed. During his travels, he befriended and married a Human barmaid named Evelyn Nightingale. Together, they had a child named Lia Morwin. Now that he has a loving family, Theo threw away dreams of grandeur and decided to instead focus on trying to raise gold for his family as he travels around the local cities, towns, and villages to earn gold to support his wife and child. Name: Zarnok Hammerfang Age: 33 Class: Barbarian / Path of the Berserker Race: Half Orc / Half Dwarf Gender: Male Pronouns: He/Him Backstory: Zarnok’s life began in hardship. His mother, a dwarf of the mines, was assaulted during an Orc raid and returned home carrying him. The dwarves welcomed her back with compassion, but when Zarnok appeared, the community saw only the tusks and heavy the brow of his orcish blood. He was tolerated at best, whispered about at worst. His mother loved him fiercely, but the weight of the community’s rejection was too much. When Zarnok was still young, he was cast out from the familiar halls of his home. Alone, he wandered the tunnels until fate brought him deeper into the mines, where another dwarven couple found him. Unlike the others, they saw not a mark of shame, but a child in need. They raised him as their own, teaching him the rhythm of hammer on stone, the patience of craft, and the warmth of family. Though he never fully fit in, shorter than orcs, tusked unlike dwarves, Zarnok embraced his dual heritage. His rage is not sorrow, but joy; the fire of proving himself, the thrill of survival, the celebration of life. He carries the name Hammerfang proudly, honoring both halves of his bloodline, hammer for the dwarves who gave him love, and fang for the orc blood he refuses to hide. Now, Zarnok travels beyond the mines, carving his own legend. Cast out once, he fights not to erase his past but to show the world that he is more than it. Name: Aylainna Kaszakiir Age: 20 years old Class: Warlock / Celestial Patron Race: Human Vistana Gender: Female Pronouns: she/her Base Backstory: Aylainna’s mother says that she was four years old when she started talking about her ‘imaginary’ devotee, the Forest Friend. While Aylainna knows most people call her strange, she has faith in the healing power of the goodly Forest Friend, a unicorn with an iridescent mane and love in its heart. Her dream is to keep the cobblestone streets of her community safe, and she’ll go to whatever lengths necessary to protect the innocent. When she isn’t spreading the Forest Friend’s love, you might find her painting clay ponies or helping her mother, the illustrious ‘Lady Opalite’ herself, sell embroidered shawls. Alternatively, she might be trying to wrangle her three younger siblings; Carmilla (17), Katya (13), and Grigory (11).

Preparing for the session
No experience, preparation, or materials are necessary. Beginners are welcome. Any homebrew modifications to the rules will be covered in session zero. A microphone is necessary, and a webcam is highly recommended and encouraged (nobody will be required to be on camera). Players should have accounts ready on Discord and Roll20 to participate in the game. D&D Beyond and the Beyond20 browser extension are optional tools for character building, but they are highly recommended.

How DM Val creates a safe table
Curse of Strahd is a gothic horror campaign that includes a lot of content that players might find triggering. Restricted behaviors by players are the obvious ones (e.g. sexual assault, torture, child abuse). In most of my games, excessive gore and sexual content will fade to black. Please be mindful of the content warnings and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Bear in mind that we will agree on a set of rules and expectations for the game in session zero, and some of the content in the campaign may fade to black or even be eliminated. Safety tools, content warnings, and character setup will be covered in a free Session 0 when enough players have signed up.
