About the adventure

The village of Redwood Watch has fallen under the shadow of an ancient evil that many of their ancestors once stood against. Adventurers are needed to combat this enemy and restore peace to the region. Hopefully you will succeed where others have failed! In this gaming session you will have the opportunity to: - Participate in a Session Zero safety discussion so that you can share your boundaries with the DM and learn how to communicate issues during gameplay! - Create an exciting custom 1st level character using the 5e 2024 rules! - Learn the cornerstones of the D&D 5e game: Social Interaction, Combat and Exploration while playing your first session with me! - Explore the rustic town of Redwood Watch and its environs in order to seek out and thwart a mysterious evil plaguing the region! - Gain XP and treasure! - Learn to level up your character (maybe even twice)! - Continue your adventures by joining my ongoing Dragon Delves campaign, or take your character with you to explore the D&D Multiverse at another table!

About me

Greetings and Welcome! My name is Paul and my screen name is a homage to Her Serenity, THE Lady of Pain from my favorite campaign setting - Planescape! I am a TTRPG veteran and have been through multiple editions of the Dungeons & Dragons game, beginning with those famous red books (Basic D&D) and moving through AD&D 2nd edition onto 3rd edition/Pathfinder where I stayed for a couple of decades. 4th edition seemed to play more like a MMORPG video game, which I didn't find appealing for a TTRPG, so I skipped it and 5th edition, too, until the 2024 rules released. Now I'm a full-on diehard convert! I can't say enough good things about D&D 2024, even with the contrast to everything that came before it. "City of Doors" is the name I gave to my overarching campaign, as I feel that Planescape makes the entire D&D Multiverse accessible to every adventurer, regardless of their home campaign world. I use Discord to communicate with players and I use roll20.net as my preferred VTT (character sheets too)! My sessions are organized with plenty of props, battle maps, miniature tokens, etc. As an adult with ADHD, I depend on these things myself and find that they are helpful even during "Theater of the Mind" encounters. Sometimes I may even do voices... I welcome players - new and returning - that are genuinely wanting to learn and participate in the cooperative gaming experience that D&D 5e is designed to be. Until then, I return to the shadows...

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be crafted at the start of the session to help those who are unfamiliar with the process. For character creation, I use the following general guidelines for 5e 2024: -Use the 2024 Player's Handbook (PHB) or 2024 Starter Set. -Ability Score stats are assigned using the Standard Array by Class table, located on pg. 38 of the PHB. (This provides a base of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8 to use as your six base Ability Scores. It also ensures that all PCs are equally matched). -All PCs begin this adventure module at 1st level, with a possible chance to advance to 2nd or even 3rd level by the end! -I prefer characters be crafted using the character sheets available on Roll20.net. -If you wish to play a particular build that is slightly outside of these guidelines, send me a DM and see if we can come up with something. Generally this means updating something from 2014 to 2024, which I'm happy to do if given enough time to work on it. -Come up with a reasonable name that sets your character apart in some way (names are always hard to come up with on the fly, so it's best to have one or two before you come to session).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I use Discord for community building, chat and voice chat for all gaming sessions. Players will also need to have an account on roll20.net in order to see the virtual table top and also to utilize features such as the character sheet, maps, minis, spell effects, dynamic lighting and dice roller. (You do not need a paid account on roll20 as I have one and my benefits are extended to my players during session!) You will need to have an idea of what kind of character concept that you would like to play. For example, do you want to play an Elven Wizard from the city? Or a Halfling druidess that lives in a tree? Or an Orc Barbarian with a fear of spiders? Coming up with one or two basic character concepts beforehand will be a great help for character creation. Also, decide if it will be okay if another PC decides to play a build similar to your own (is there room for two wizards in the party?), or if you want to be the only one playing a particular species and/or class in the party, and plan your backup character concept(s) accordingly. ** Players also need to send a portrait of their character to me, so I can make a miniature token **

What lady_0f_pain (Paul) brings to the table

It's my intention to provide a framework for new players to continue playing the game beyond this one session. You can expect that I'll play the rules as written so that you can develop a predictable sense of the game physics (knowing the rules empowers players to play their best)! I will help you learn to use your character's powers strategically to support your allies and overcome challenges. My games provide a good balance between role playing, combat and exploration. I can't say that I dip heavier into one category more so than another. I'm a supportive DM and I want to help your character shine! While I will use my powers to challenge you (and you will HATE my villains), my ultimate goal is to provide you the opportunity to overcome those obstacles so you can feel that uplifting tingle from having done good deeds by the end of the session! Mechanically I am very organized as a DM. For this particular module I have all the maps and tokens prepared and ready, so there will be visual aids even when doing "theater of the mind" scenes.

Homebrew rules

I don't have any current Homebrew Rules of note, but I reserve the right to develop and implement them as needed. Unearthed Arcana 2024 materials are allowed.

Safety

How lady_0f_pain (Paul) creates a safe table

During the process of creating our characters and discussing roleplaying in general, we will go over a checklist of items where each player can outline their boundaries and tolerances. You will also want to check the content warning labels to ensure that you can stomach the potential content of this module. Players also have the option to take breaks as needed and to freely discuss with me if they're feeling dysregulated by any game-related content. As DM I realize that it's my party and everyone is responding to my invite. So I want you all to be comfortable during the game and to feel good when you walk away from it. I'm always available to discuss sessions with players even after the fact, if it helps them process the experience, or if some of the content needs to be sensitized in some way.
