About the adventure

You have waited for your first mission from the masters at the library. The day has finally come. You are part of a team of would-be adventurers sent to a keep in the far-off borderlands to find a book thief, (someone you consider a friend) recover what he stole and bring him back for punishment. The borderlands are known for many things; bandits, goblins, and the chance for long lost treasure. You have always dreamed of becoming an adventurer; now is your chance. All you have to do is to get along with the rest of the party and learn to use your skills in the field for the first time. You may get rich in your travels. You will certainly face many trials. You could even die! But the librarians were clear - you better find the book thief before he attempts to use it. Who knows what could happen then.

About me

My goal is to welcome you to a virtual table that you completely forget about as you become immersed in a story that has never been told before -- because you and your fellow adventurers are creating the story. Success for me comes when you are not only the author, but the character and the audience all at once. My job is just to locate you in a space and introduce you to NPCs and Denizens of the world. I have been doing this for a very long time. I promise to work hard as your DM and keep the table fun and friendly.

Character creation

Creating your character

I will send a D&D Beyond campaign link. If you create a character from within the campaign, you can use any of the shared content available to create a character. No limitations on class, background or species. Use the point-buy option for abilities. I would like to have every character provide a background. It can be brief or in-depth, but please tell me about your character's childhood, why they turned to adventuring, who their arch-enemy is and why. I will have further instructions on the D&D Beyond campaign landing page.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account and a D&D Beyond character. Each can be obtained for free. The Virtual Table Top (VTT) we are using is Above VTT which requires either a Chrome or Firefox plugin installed prior to the game.

What Pitiful Dragon (Rick) brings to the table

This is the Stater Set for the 2024 version of 5e with my own twists. I will patiently teach new players how to play. I am here to make sure we all have fun. That does not mean that I will go out of my way to make sure that your Character survives. But if they do die I hope their death is glorious! I have been DM'ing for a very long time. I love letting players explore as they play; explore the dungeon, explore their character, and even explore their own fears and limitations at Role Play. I run a clean all ages game. Please no sexual innuendos, and let's keep our language PG. D&D involves killing monsters. That does not mean that I will get overly graphic in describing the hideousness of the monsters nor the gruesome way they die. I have ADHD so... yeah... sometimes things get a little wild... but for the most part I stay on target and keep things moving. I try to do voices. I am not a voice actor, so let's set aside your Matthew Mercer expectations before we start. Feel free to mock my attempts at voices but remember excessive mocking could lead to a deadly encounter with a Tarrasque. :) I play with two key rules. The DM is the supreme authority when it comes to rules. I lean toward RAI before RAW, and the rule of cool will often reign over any other rules but probably not all the time.

Homebrew rules

I am sure I have homebrew rules, but I will have to explain them as they come up. If you have a way you have always played, and you want to propose we do it that way, I will consider it.

Safety

How Pitiful Dragon (Rick) creates a safe table

I want to run a family friendly game. It is Gothic Horror, so I will warn about certain triggers built into that, but I don't want a game where we describe the gore or abuse involved. I will provide some documents in advance since this is a one-shot and develop a checklist. Players can IM me with an S, N or O during the gameplay.
