About the adventure
For those interested in exploring themes of resistance and survival in a dysopic future. The world finds itself in ruin brought upon by billionaire rule that stretched environmental limits to a point where states crumbled and a chaos ensued where ecofascists came to control city states throughout the former United States. San Francisco, the birthplace for much of the cancerous tech that brought the world here, has seen itself morphed into a shell of its former self. The Marina, Mission Bay, and SOMA are all underwater as a result of sea-level rise. Meanwhile the Presidio, Presidio Heights, and Pacific Heights have become a hub for the elites. Golden Gate Park is now home to a rebel group in a state of pseudo-constant conflict with the established powers, while most of the remaining parts of the city underserve thousands making ends meet. The reality is dark, but the tone of the campaign will oscillate through the communities players choose to engage with. There are still families and enclaves of hope alongside darker and even nihilistic forces. Can any individual bring about change in such an overwhelming world? There's only one way to find out: believing it's worth a shot.

About me
Hi! I am a professionally trained improviser with years of performing experience who has been DMing since 2020. My top priority at the table is ensuring everyone has a great time. In my experience, that usually comes from a balance of comedic high jinks and compelling stories that keep players invested. I have significant experience with first-time players and am always excited by the opportunity to work with newer folks. I have run a wide variety of homebrew one shots and campaigns. While I have had a lot of fun with several traditional fantasy one shots and campaigns, I've also run a Wild West murder mystery campaign, a campaign in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, and a modern day campaign set on a college campus. I also was the DM for Critical Hit, a baseball-themed D&D actual play.

Creating your character
I will meet with each player before session zero to discuss their character ideas and then build the character together. For this campaign, characters will likely start at level 3, unless a specific backstory justifies a lower level (which would probably be 1).
What to expect
Preparing for the session
All players need to create a character sheet in D&D Beyond for their characters. However, they are welcome to use printed character sheets on their own and roll real dice.
What Marc brings to the table
In every game I run a combine my years of experience as a performer (including improv) with my background understanding the world through the social sciences and journalism. Players can expect to enter worlds that are rich and well-researched, but still have the opportunity to shape the game and remake the world through their choices. I will bring a small array of voices, but will primarily embody different NPCs through different speaking patterns, content, and gesticulating than accents. I am comfortable with a range of approaches to roleplay, from more casual third-person descriptors to completely method approaches. Every player is welcome to play to their own comfort level and we will talk that out in Session 0 as well.
Homebrew rules
Homebrew rules may be developed with the table collaboratively, but other than Nat 20 as auto success, I don't bring any hard and fast homebrew rules to the table.

How Marc creates a safe table
We will discuss this in Session 0 to ensure everyone is comfortable with me and their fellow players. Since this setting is based off the modern world, there are institutional discriminations baked into the setting. However, there are certain red lines in my games that I will not play as an NPC under any circumstances (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and intimate partner/sexual violence), and will expect the table to abide those. In other words, the world may have certain structural inequities, but players will not face enemies spewing slurs at them. Players will be able to ask for other content to be removed or de-emphasized in the story as well as empowered to call for breaks in sessions to ask for content changes.
