About the adventure

The Ghost-Fields, wrought with ruins and swaths of sand, hides a small village, Shear. Far from civilization, Shear takes care of its own with little regard to outsiders. Something, however, lurks over the townsfolk. A secret kept buried for hundreds of years. The thing about secrets, the only way to keep them is if everyone who knows them are dead. The word of strange ruins discovered near Shear has brought in a deluge of explorers, fortune hunters, the mad and greedy. You, too, seek the secrets below the Ghost-Fields. The reasons your own. The darkness calls, and you answer. This campaign is intended for those looking for a change from 5e. Daggerheart offers a different style of play compared to 5e, focusing more on narratives rather than combat. Setting: the setting is not one of the options listed in the Daggerheart rulebook. Instead it is a homebrew setting that I've used for a while called Agiriel. The land is young, and civilization is only just taking root. The masked spirits wander the earth in search of their shamans and priests. Few small towns and even fewer cities provide refuge from the harsh wilderness. Something, however, lurks beneath. Something even the spiris lost to time. Bones of the ancients break the skin of Agiriel. Will you find a modicum of the forgotten past or be swallowed by it? The game itself will be using Ave Nox by Alex Coggon & Charles Ferguson-Aver with some changes to make a story fit player characters' backstories. Fair Warning: your characters will face many perils under the Ghost-Fields. Danger is everywhere, and they may come face to face with their own mortality.

About me

I started running games in 2016 cause I thought Adventure League was too loud and crowded at my local game shop. My main games are DnD 5e and Cypher, though I have experience with Alien RPG, Call of Cthulhu, Star Wars D6, and more! I love comedy and fantasy games but thoroughly enjoy horror and sci-fi. My goal as a GM is to make sure you're having fun and encourage character building/growth. I'm not a RAW kind of GM. While I do defer to the rules on certain things, my overall goal is to keep balance and fun integral to the game. I also give inspiration if you make me laugh out loud while you're in character.

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll be making characters together at session 0 using Demiplane or Foundry. We will also use this time to connect character backstories and figure out how the story begins. Players may have ideas in mind for characters, but I would ask to be somewhat flexible on backstory in some cases so we can get the party together. There is an additional homebrew ancestry available for this campaign, the Ketheri, a people that can easily adapt to many environments and are more in tune with the spirits of Agiriel. More details are available in the lore of Agiriel document.

The current party

I'm aiming for a mix of serious storytelling with a splash of fun antics. First session is a session 0, and if you've n ever made a character before, we'll walk you through it! If you have an idea for a character, please let us know when you sign up!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need Discord and Roll20 accounts in order to play. Demiplane is optional. Microphones and headphones (or speakers if you want everyone to hear how awesome the game is) are required.

What GMSyd brings to the table

I love doing an array of voices and including PC backstories in the narrative. I also involve everyone at the table. Unless you explicitly tell me you want to hang back during the session, I will be asking what you think. I'm very much a Rule of Cool GM. I thoroughly enjoy comedy but love to sprinkle horror in my games as well. I do like using music to set the mood as well.

Homebrew rules

Spotlight Tracker during Combat: each player characters will get three actions during combat "rounds." Once all player actions are used and the GM has used enemy actions, the actions reset and a new round begins. Actions can consist of movement, attacks, spellcasting, etc. Massive Damage: If you take damage equal to double your Severe threshold, you mark 4 hit points. Defined Ranges for Grid Maps: see Daggerheart rulebook pg 103 for Defined Ranges. - Melee : 1 square - Very Close: 3 squares - Close: 6 squares - Far: 12 squares - Very Far: 13+ squares - Out of Range: off map

Safety

How GMSyd creates a safe table

There is a lines and veils document in the Roll20 game that players can edit if they feel the need to do so. I always ask at Session 0 if there's anything I need to add, and also encourage shy players to either send me a message or edit the document when they have the chance if they don't feel comfortable saying it in front of others. I also have an open door policy. If you need to step away, please do so. The only thing we'll ask when you get back is if you're ok.
