My games use the official Dungeons & Dragons rules with Rules as Written as the foundation, but every now and then, if someone comes up with an awesome, creative idea that makes the whole table smile, I might lean into a little Rule of Cool. Those moments are the exception, not the rule, because I believe the rules are there to create a fair and consistent experience while still leaving room for those unforgettable cinematic moments that make D&D so special. I start our table off with no homebrew rules and let the group decide together when and if they need them.
