About me

Matt here! I fell in love with tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) playing Dungeons & Dragons in 1989. I was eight years old, over at my friend's house, and their older brother ran the game. Though the game only lasted three weeks, I was hooked on the story, world-building, and absolute joy of the game. However, I couldn't find anyone to run e-games or be a Game Master. So, I accepted that role and turned as many friends I could into players, then began turning any players I could find into friends. My first love is the story and characters, and combat keeps it interesting. For a long time, a company called White Wolf made my favorite games. I ran those for years and gave up on D&D because most people I found at the time liked the rules more than the story, and I could never find people who enjoyed both. Then, Critical Role brought everyone out of the woodwork! After watching their streams along with Relics and Rarities, I started to explore D&D games again. And I couldn't be happier about this! About a year ago, I started making steps to turn my 30 years of experience and passion for D&D into a full-time, sustainable career. In one year, I found terrific players and, by the grace of God, have been able to become a full-time storyteller in the TTRPG space. See you at the table! I hope you will join the games and make amazing friends as we battle and work through fantasy life together.

Homebrew rules

NORMAL RULES - If the group succeeds at their quest, each player receives a share of treasure, even if your character doesn't survive. - Critical hits deal max die damage plus the roll instead of doubling the dice. - Flanking provides a +2 bonus to attack rolls. - Falling to zero hit points also incurs one level of Exhaustion. HARDCORE CHANGES - If the group succeeds at their quest, each player received a share of treasure plus bonus loot, but only if your character survives. - Falling to zero hit points also incurs two levels of exhaustion. - Enemies have improved stat blocks, which means more health, more damage, and more special abilities. HOUSE RULES Delaying: During combat, you can choose to hold your entire turn, rather than just an action. You do so at the beginning of your turn, after any start of turn effects have taken place, at which point you select a new, lower number in the initiative order. This becomes your initiative for the rest of the encounter, and your turn immediately ends. Any start of turn effects that took place before you delayed in this round do not take place again when you take your delayed turn. Emanations: Damage from Emanation spells entering a creature’s space can only be dealt during the caster’s turn. Prone: Standing up from Prone triggers Opportunity Attacks. 9th Level Spells: 9th level spells cannot be learned except by Deathwish5e cards that grant access to them. Spells Errata The following spells have been modified to better suit Deathwish5e gameplay. Wish: Wish can only be used to duplicate a spell of level 8 or lower. Its other effects are not available, but may be found through cards and other means. Class Changes: Ranger The following Ranger spell has been modified to enhance Ranger’s viability and effectiveness. Hunter’s Mark: When cast by a Ranger, this spell does not require Concentration. Mark Efficiency: At 13th level, instead of gaining the Relentless Hunter feature, Rangers gain Mark Efficiency, a feature that allows them to move their Mark from a slain creature to a new target as a Free Action instead of a Bonus Action. Please visit https://www.deathwish5e.com/How-to-Play/ for a breakdown of our house rules.
