About the adventure

Exandria - A world with a long and brutal past. Wars between the very gods themselves have scarred the lands, leaving swathes of the world uninhabitable... or worse. But that's just another mystery for aspiring heroes such as yourself to conquer, isn't it? You've always charged into challenges, using those who would tell you that your goals are impossible as signposts to guide your way. With a determination like yours, the only thing holding you back is your own ambition. However, fate rarely lets those destined for greatness idle for long. A plea for aid from an ancient and powerful entity will drag you into an adventure that will leave the fate of the entire world hanging in the balance. Game Summary: A yearly competition of skill reveals an ancient artifact, lost since a time before recorded history. The demigod who wielded the artifact appears in a vision to beg you for aid, pleading with you from beyond time and space to find his prison and save him. Simultaneously, a strange new substance appears in the hands of shadowy groups, bent on twisting it towards their own nefarious ends. The race is on for you to find the prison that holds this ancient hero, before the machinations of unknown conspirators cause catastrophe to befall Exandria once again.

About me

Hello, one and all! My name is Connor, and I've been a GM since 2018, but with experience in TTRPGs going all the way back to 2007. RPGs have been a tradition in my family since the early 80s, stretching across 3 whole generations. I've picked up the torch as a third generation GM, ready to bring more than 40 years of shared experience and knowledge to the table. I'm a lover of a good mystery, and I enjoy incorporating aspects of investigative gameplay even in stories not primarily about solving a mystery. If a story makes you stop and think "now what could that possibly mean?" then there's a strong chance that I'll be all over it. If you're looking for games that will challenge your characters, while presenting twists and turns for them to work through as intriguing stories unfold due to their actions, then I'd love to run a game for you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will use a 2d6 + 6 ability score generation method, with three re-rolls of the dice allowed. All ability scores will be rolled during session 0. Characters will begin the game with the standard starting equipment of their class and background. All official sources are available to use, except for any non-Exandria setting specific sourcebooks. Ex; the Path of Glory Paladin is legal, as it appeared in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, but Silvery Barbs is not, as it only appears in Strixhaven; Curriculum of Chaos.

The current party

Thus far, our band of fated heroes consists of; Drenn the Dawnless: Half-Elf Paladin of the Oath of Vengeance. Fleeing from a life where she never truly belonged, and looking for answers about her mysterious past. Atraeus: Human Paladin of the Oath of Devotion. A mute man seeking both relics of his people, as well as truth and justice in a world where he's experienced so much hardship. Lucas Tybrerus: Human Warlock of the Fiendish Pact. A noble questing to further the fortune of his family and estate, despite the dark secret that hangs over him.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Several portions of this adventure take place underwater, so reviewing the underwater combat rules in the Player's Handbook will help those sections flow more smoothly. As this is an adventure set in a published setting, we will be using the gods and locations present in the setting. You do not need to be an expert on Critical Role's lore in order to enjoy this campaign, but taking a moment to look up basic information on the continents of Marquet and Wildemount will help you slide into the setting more easily.

What The 3rd Gen GM brings to the table

I will have a Discord bot to set music and ambience during the games. Additionally, I have a premium Roll20 membership, so we will enjoy map and spell effects on the VTT.

Homebrew rules

I use spellcasting material component rules at my table, so you will need to ensure that your character finds or sources materials for spellcasting if they cannot be substituted for a spellcasting focus. I do not use flanking optional rules, as it tends to favor NPCs who regularly appear in large groups, as well as making several class and subclass options redundant.

Safety

How The 3rd Gen GM creates a safe table

In order to ensure that we maintain a safe and respectful game space, we will be making use of X, N, & O cards during the game. These can simply be sent through the in-game chat to signal the need to stop and re-assess the scene, tread carefully, or to proceed with approval. Additionally, we will discuss game content and concerns during session 0, in order to ensure that I have a framework of what the players consider upsetting content, and can avoid or incorporate those appropriately. Lastly, as this is a very narrative-driven adventure, we will check-in for everyone's stars & wishes. This will give everyone an opportunity to express what they would like to see out of the adventure.
