About the adventure
Welcome Students to Aethercrest Arcane Academy! Your Education here is sure to be full of fun, education, and just a little bit of adventure! You'll be sorted into your houses, granted your wand, attend your classes, and make many friends with whom you shall surely test your mettle with time and time again. In a world filled with monsters and wonderous phenomenon, we were at Aethercrest seek to arm our students with the knowledge and skills to be able to handle any situation whether they find employment in a kitchen or a Kings Court. There are those, of course, who take a more mercenary approach to magic, and we hope the things they learn here will aid them in surviving the dangers they will surely face. But for our new students, you needn't fear, we will make sure you have a safe and solid education before we start teaching you how to handle more dangerous situations. Above table, this game is a take on a Magic School with your characters as students. The Magic world and the Mundane world are kept separate, but from time to time things cross over from either side. It's a contemporary setting with the magical world having a little difficulty in incorporating sensitive technology resulting in a more anachronistic setting. In addition your characters will also be leaving the school grounds to go on adventures, both chaperoned and un-chaperoned by teachers. You're also the cream of the crop, the best of the best, and I intend to make you feel that way, as both blessing and curse. In regards to plot, you'll deal with mysteries, school politics and slice of life, as well as an over arching contention with a powerful recurring antagonist with each "year" having a new villain proxy. It'll take place in both the Magical world as well as the Mundane, with your characters having to keep secrets and manage your contacts in both.

Meet the Game Master
About me
I've been a Professional Game Master since 2018, and I've been running games since 2009, with the majority of my games being in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. I specialize in custom settings and stories, and I want to give each player the game experience they're looking for! Let's make some stories together we'll be talking about for years to come.

Creating your character
We are going to be playing with Gestalt Character classes! Take one Caster class and one martial or support class and fuse them together! More options! Same number of spell slots and hit points. Everyone gets 1 feat related to their background, assuming their background doesn't already come with one. If you're confident about making it yourself, just send it over to me when you're done, otherwise we can do it session zero. For stats you get to choose between rolling your dice on session zero, or doing point-buy. I'm a generous fella so if you roll your stats you are guaranteed at least one 18, if you take point-buy I grant you an additional feat. Characters will be rolled at either level 1 or 3, to be determined session zero. All published WOTC books are up for grabs, any 3rd party or Homebrew content needs to be run by me first, and I have homebrew content I've already approved in my discord.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll need access to Discord and Roll20, a mic and a decent internet connection. Beyond that, I'd like you to consider what kind of experiences you'd like to have your character go through, and which you'd like known and which you'd like kept secret. I'll work with you on anything you need help with.
What Jason brings to the table
I use theater of the mind, character voices, ambient music and I like combat so expect plenty of it between lots of heavy roleplay. I tend to follow the rule of cool, but I like to keep as close to the rules as written as possible to make things consistent.
Homebrew rules
I have a bevy of different homebrew rules I like to use to make things more interesting. -For potions if you use an action you get the full amount, if you use a bonus action you roll. -For Critcal hits you'll roll one die and add the max amount of the die to it instead of rolling a second die. -I allow one to play warlock as a Intelligence caster, and Sorcerers to use Constitution as their casting stat. -Monks will use a buffed base class as created by Bone Wizard on Youtube. (check it out, he's tons of fun) and more, but we'll get into them as they arise.

Safety
How Jason creates a safe table
My table will remain a safe space for all players so that you may feel comfortable to engage in more intense roleplay. At any point one can verbally or non-verbally ask for things to be paused or stopped. (I have X, N, & O cards on roll 20) After intense roleplay we'll take a moment to reassure everyone and to prevent emotional bleed. After each session I'll do a general check in, and if I think anyone seemed uncomfortable I'll do a more personal and private check in. Please feel comfortable to call me out on any behavior that makes you uncomfortable, I'll be sure to address and correct it.
