About the adventure

In the glorious floating city of Bezal, the rich and powerful step easily between glitzy parties and private airships, secret gardens and personal tailors - but you aren’t one of them. Instead, you and your ragtag crew are what gets scraped off their boots, struggling to get by in the city’s fetid underbelly. But now you have a golden opportunity: a mysterious benefactor who has promised you a life-changing amount of gold in exchange for the successful emancipation of a famed revolutionary from the terrifying magical penitentiary known as Thessicate’s Gate. Over the course of 10-15 bi-weekly sessions, you’ll work to set up the perfect conditions for the prisoner's escape - recruiting allies, learning floorplans, and bribing guards - until finally tipping the dominoes into action. If you can pull it off, it will change your lives forever. But if you fail, it may well be the last thing you ever do… Great for players new and old to D&D 5e!

About me

Hi, I'm Sam! I'm an award-nominated GM and player who's been enjoying tabletop games since being introduced to them in middle school. I've been running games for players both old and new since 2015, and have completed several multi-year campaigns, as well as a string of shorter games. I am the current GM of "Pest Control", an actual-play Monster of the Week show that has been running since 2022, produced in collaboration with the AltHaven TTRPG network, and I have been a regular performer on several other shows including "Hijinks & Handlebars" (Kids on Bikes, 2018-2020), and "$2 Creature Feature" (2021/2022). I have experience running D&D 5e, Daggerheart, Monster of the Week, Beam Saber, Kids on Bikes, Kids on Brooms, Monsterhearts, Icarus, Alice is Missing, The Ground Itself, Blades in the Dark, The Quiet Year, Dungeon World, Good Society, and more. I'd love to help make your next campaign unforgettable!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will walk through the creation of Level 3 adventurers as a group during our Session 0, but everyone is encouraged to bring 1-3 character concepts with them so we have a place to start. I would advise you not to look at skills or abilities after Level 6 or 7, as I expect that's the furthest level we'll achieve during the course of the game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Welcome Adventurers! Please join the Discord and message me in the general chat to be added to the relevant campaign: https://discord.gg/c9XfFheXvv And please add a character to this D&D Beyond campaign. You can fill out as much of your character as you like, just keep in mind that we'll be building/finalizing characters together in our Session 0: https://www.dndbeyond.com/campaigns/join/52884553164074661 In addition, everyone should plan to have access to the following: - A computer microphone of some kind (I would also strongly recommend a webcam) - A Zoom account - A Roll20 account - A D&D Beyond account - A Discord account - Access to Google Docs

What Sam Richardson brings to the table

I'll provide a Roll20 environments for important conflicts, and we'll keep character sheets together in a D&D Beyond digital campaign. Smaller encounters will be run "theater of the mind" style. For the most part, my GM style leans into Rule of Cool - I want to encourage you to make the fun choice, not always the safe one!

Homebrew rules

For this game, we'll be using the following homebrew rules: CLEAVE - When a melee attack reduces an undamaged creature to 0 hit points, any excess damage from that attack might carry over to another creature nearby. The attacker targets another creature within reach and, if the original attack roll can hit it, applies any remaining damage to it. If that creature was undamaged and is likewise reduced to 0 hit points, repeat this process, carrying over the remaining damage until there are no valid targets, or until the damage carried over fails to reduce an undamaged creature to 0 hit points. POTIONS - Potions may be consumed as either a bonus action, or an action. DEATH SAVES - Incurred failures on death saves are only reset with a long rest.

Safety

How Sam Richardson creates a safe table

Session 0 will be a free session to go over the game, rules, setting, tone, and player characters as well as initial conversations about Lines & Veils, and the creation of X/N/O cards to be held up or messaged during play. From there, we'll jump right into the game starting with Session 1!
