About the adventure
Howdy to alla y'all varmints and critters! Gather round and join in for a custom Wild West demo of the hotly-anticipated Legend in the Mist system from Son of Oak Game Studio. It's a narrative-forward game that's quick to pick up and get playing as your character's abilities are as straightforward as how you'd describe them to a friend. Spend less time tracking ability scores and conditional modifiers, and instead just be a "Practiced Liar" or possess "Acrobatic Agility." If that sounds like a good time, then sit by the fire and listen to this yarn. Billy the Kid may be a goat, but he's strong as an ox and stubborn as a mule. He's led your ragtag group of miscreants across the desert for years and has only occasionally led you astray, so when he says this next job is your meal ticket to an early retirement into a life of luxury, you're not about to say no. A train is headed from Rio Verde to Calico tonight and is supposed to be carrying some very valuable cargo. Rumor has it that some fat cat and his ilk are moving some hefty investments into town on account of someone finding some sparkly rocks in them there hills or some such nonsense. All those valuables sure must be heavy and hard to transport; really you'd be doing them a favor in lightening their load. In One Last Train to Calico, players will take on the role of a gang of desert animals trying to secure their meal ticket by pulling off a daring train heist. Whether you're leaping between speeding train cars, shaking down passengers, cracking open a safe, or having a shootout with the law as you escape into the sunset, it's sure to be a rootin' tootin' good time!
Meet the Game Master
About me
Not to sound too cliche right off the bat, but I just really love games, y'all. I started at a way-too-crowded D&D table of rowdy teenagers back in high school, cut my teeth on freeform forum roleplay, and made my way back to tabletop games in college. Since then I've met so many amazing people, made so many incredible memories, and had so much fun exploring this interesting and innovative space. I just want to keep doing that and share this hobby that I love so much with more people. So let's craft stories together! One of my favorite things to do as a GM is to turn dials and tweak campaign details to center the player characters and their stories, to really tie them into the world of the adventure. I want to see your characters have dramatic, fulfilling arcs. I want to see them struggle and overcome adversity, and while failure is always an option, it should be a chance to tackle things from a different angle. I'm the president of your character's fan club, but also the heel that will needle them so we can all cheer when they win. I always strive to bring a high level of system mastery to my games. Forget a rule? No problem, we're all always learning, and my brain loves to hold onto minutia like that. Can it remember the birthdays of my loved ones? Nope, gotta save space for the fact that you can drown someone back to life in Dungeons and Dragons 3e. I'm part of the Chicano, neurodivergent, and LGBTQ+ communities, so it's important to me that my table always be a safe place for everyone regardless of race, ability, gender, orientation, age, religion, etc. We don't tolerate intolerance here.

Creating your character
Players will choose from a selection of pregenerated characters so we can dive right into the adventure. This whimsical wild west is home to an eclectic bunch, from a swaggering, gunslinging roadrunner to a strong, silent gila monster, so there should be a character to fit everyone's fancy
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll need a free Discord account to participate in voice chat; a link to the server we'll use will be made available once you join the game. If you'd like to make an account on Owlbear Rodeo, their free tier provides you with all of their player-facing utilities, though this isn't necessary and you can still use the website as a guest.

How Michael creates a safe table
This is meant to be a generally lighthearted romp, and even the violence will be more akin to an action movie or classic Looney Tunes than dark and gritty realism. That said, my top priority as MC is to make sure everyone at the table has a safe and comfortable time. To that end, digital X, N, and O cards will be available in the Owlbear Rodeo room, and we'll go over those safety tools at the beginning of our session. My tables have a zero tolerance policy for any real life racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, misogyny, or any other form of bigotry. Such behavior will result in immediate removal from the game.
