About the adventure

Tristhmus is a grand continent littered with islands and ruins, impressive cities and humble villages, strange peoples and forgotten secrets. History and secrets are buried here, waiting to be unearthed by the brave or foolhardy. Many live in more rustic parts of the world - where the Creature of Twilight are more myth than material, and the old powers are long and forgotten. Some parts remember the Seree - an order of powerful sorcerers that once ruled the region under an oppressive empire - whilst others tell tales of the Morai - the first to uncover the secrets of magic thousands of years ago and, to some, the creators of the Twilight. For many in these quiet towns, life continues as it always has done, but something stirs. Much as the first drop in a pond betrays the imminent downpour, there are whispers of things that move in the darkness. There as sightings of odd creatures stalking between the trees. There is talk that the hours of night are stretching into the day's like reaching shadows. Legend in the Mist is the latest game released by Son of Oak, creators of City of Mist and Otherscape, and is their take on a rustic fantasy game that builds on their robust, flexible, and narrative Mist Engine. Inspired by PbtA games, this system allows you to build a character with themes in mind, writing descriptive tags about your character to flesh them out. Whenever this tag becomes relevant, you select it and add it to your dice roll (the more you add, the bigger your modifier) and then roll your 2d6. A 10+ achieves your goal, a 7-9 is a partial success with a consequence, and a 6 triggers something bad (but isn't necessarily a failure!). This system allows for swift, character-driven gameplay that puts a heavy onus on player creativity and the narrative woven at the table. The GM doesn't roll, we don't plot out actions on a battle-map, and we do not roll for initiative. Just as Gandalf is very powerful, he is no more important to the story than Samwise. Dice rolls progress the story, and your characters should feel human (or whatever ancestry you decide to play!) and your sheet will represent that more than crunchy numbers and strategic min-maxing! This game will take heavy inspiration from the setting in the Trilemma Adventures book by Michael Prescott, but tied into the basic world-building of Legend in the Mist as well as what we create together at the table.

About me

Hi there! I am a Games Master with nearly a decade's worth of experience and have run a number of games in D&D, SWFFG, Starfinder, Lancer, Basic Fantasy, Pokemon Tabletop United, Pathfinder 2e, Blades in the Dark, Forbidden Lands, City of Mist... quite a few. This hobby has somewhat taken over my life: be it my fortnightly game that has been running for 8 years, various one-shots and mini-campaigns, play-by-post experiments, artwork, books... I'm rather enthusiastic. I use Foundry VTT's many bells and whistles to bring life to all of these fantastic games.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create our characters together in the free Session 0 to make sure we all understand the system. There are three main "paths" to creating a character - quick, simple, or detailed. We will likely use a mix of the latter two to really get a grasp of the characters and mechanics and will then focus on building the link between the characters (the Fellowship) as well as some details about the world and where we will begin. If you have a character concept in mind; great! If you have a character already built; also great! If you have no clue whatsoever; you know what? Also great!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Just jump into the Discord and I will help onboard you into the rules and the system as a whole. It is very easy to understand, so most of the creation should be completed in our Session 0. I also run a "see how it fits" policy. For 2 sessions, if you realise that the concept is not what you envisioned, or the tags aren't working how you thought they would, you can swap them out for different ones. There are a ton of options in the system, and I don't want to cause anxiety or choice paralysis! I am always available to chat. If you aren't sure about how something works, the practical use of something, which tags would fit the concept, what the terminology means, please do not hesitate to ask. You aren't pestering me, you don't need to feel bad, I really love character creation and enjoy helping!

What Reece - Panda Beard brings to the table

I have maps/scenes, tokens & character images, curated playlists and ambience, art, animated features on the VTT, a vibrant Discord server, pdfs for the rules, and the fully-loaded Foundry VTT set-up with the rules and references from the book. I will be available as frequently as I can for questions, I am inclusive and allow for creative solutions, and I will aim for fun and enjoyment above all else! In terms of my personal style, I tend to lean on a relaxed, light-hearted tone with jokes and some space for anecdotal derailing at times. However, I do like to flip the switch for dramatic, tense, suspenseful, or heartwrenching scenes and moments to keep the balance and engagement in the story.

How Reece - Panda Beard creates a safe table

I like to follow the rules but allow for creative solutions and some appropriate bending. Combat should aim to be snappy, and I make sure that everyone gets to have sufficient time with the spotlight. Table Etiquette: - This is a game: having fun is always the first goal. This expands to all players - GM included. - Respect the team: racism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, or any other toxic and disgraceful behaviour will not be tolerated. We are all human beings, so let's celebrate that. - Communication is key: conflict happens, and often enhances the game as a whole. Make sure that you check in with everyone so that we can be clear about where that conflict stops. - Be reasonable and clear with your expectations: every character has a story, and campaigns are long-form. I'll do my best to make sure that everyone feels that they have had valuable "screen-time", but I would also ask that you remain patient and respectful of the fact that the spotlight may shine on others for a time, too. That being said, I - as a mistake-prone and fallible human - will always take the time to listen and discuss any grievances. This refers back to the previous point. - Do not be a ghost: this does not mean "don't be quiet". Some people aren't as keen on role-play, and that is fine. What I am referring to, is people exiting with no word or explanation. If our game is not your cup-of-tea, that is absolutely fine, and I hope that you find a better fit soon. If that is the case, please let us know. I always appreciate feedback, and that way we can fill the spot, and the game doesn't grind to a halt whilst we find explanations as to why your character isn't there.
