About the adventure

You're a sailor in a world where the trees destroyed most of civilization and forced what remained to the mountaintops that remain above the canopy or to chunks of solid ground lifted to the treetops by the explosive growth of the giant trees. The sap-like chemical fueling this growth has caused strange mutations among the living things that continue to adapt and survive in the new world. You're on the crew of a ship that travels between settlements on the canopy. Is your ship powered by giant chainsaws cutting their way through the branches? Have you installed the heart of a leviathan to power giant, centipedal legs to skitter through the leaves? Is it built for scavenging, carrying passengers/cargo, being a traveling circus, or is it a pirate ship? Are you a 7ft tall cactus person with flowers for sensory organs that makes tea for your crew out of plants foraged from the wildsea, giving them temporary benefits? Or are you a hive mind of hundreds of spiders that stole lightning from a living storm and can channel it to jump start your ship or electrocute your enemies? In a game of The Wildsea, you'll create a ship with the other players that will suit the journeys you'll go on together, and then make characters to inhabit it. This campaign will be very player driven and collaborative. You'll be exploring a sandbox setting full of weird and evocative locations, NPCs, and creatures. The further down below the canopy you delve, the more dangerous it becomes, but also, the more likely it is you'll discover valuable resources. I tend to lean in to the horror that's possible in the setting, and there's plenty of room for lighter adventures with this game. *Art from the book used with permission from Felix Issacs, the author/game designer*

About me

Hello, I'm Celeste! I'm queer, nonbinary, trans femme (they/them), and I've been playing in and running TTRPGs with my friends for about 6 years. I also have a lot of experience facilitating TTRPG therapy groups, and really enjoy creating spaces for people to explore different ways of being in the context of role playing whether that's in a therapy group or not. I also love stories, and co-creating them with a group of people is my favorite way to experience them. My main goal when I'm GMing is to facilitate the table making a fun and interesting story together, and I deeply appreciate players at the table who are as committed to that goal as I am. I've enjoyed all kinds of fantasy and sci-fi media since I was a kid and love to co-create stories in those types of settings with others. I'm particularly interested in running narrative focused games with more role play, but also enjoy some amount of tactical and cinematic combat. I love more collaborative games that involve players making up some information about the world and giving me opportunities to build on their contributions. This also lends itself to more player driven, sandbox type campaigns, which suit my style well. It's important to me to maintain an inclusive and respectful atmosphere at my tables. I won't allow for any racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc at my tables. Also, I'll never use AI for my listings or in my games.

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll do character creation during session 0! Also, before the crew makes characters together, you'll design your ship. Your characters will start as "Young Guns" for this campaign to give you more room to grow and progress on a longer timeline (don't worry if that doesn't mean anything to you now, I'll explain when we get into it!) We'll use a website called wildsea.charsmith.com for digital character sheets/VTT.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need internet, a working microphone, camera encouraged but not required, and accounts on Discord and wildsea.charsmith.com.

What Celeste brings to the table

I'll provide knowledge of the game mechanics and setting and experience running this game and similar ones. I'll have a discord bot with a soundtrack playing in the voice channel that we use for the game. I also use soundboards to add sound effects via the discord bot in real time to create an even more immersive experience. I'll set up the game on the charsmith website so everyone will be able to see each others character sheets and collaboratively edit the ship sheet. The site also has a compendium with rules from the book, so everyone will have access to those too. My GM style leans heavily into improv, which suits the player driven and sandbox nature of the game, so you can expect me to ask you open ended questions to figure out what would be interesting for you to explore with your character and build on your answers on the fly in session. I'll also provide encounters with NPCs and hazardous creatures that can be solved by fighting if you want, but each obstacle will have many other narrative options to overcome them. I'm not a pro voice actor, but I do my best. Voices are something I'm working on and I at least make them distinct enough so that you can tell who's talking in role play scenes with multiple NPCs. The game is medium crunch, with many mechanics to use if we wish, and it's very fiction first and narrative focused, so rule of cool usually suits the game quite well.

Homebrew rules

I'll occasionally pull things from the Wildsea discord, some of which is fanmade and other things are put out by the game designer himself as discord exclusive content. I'll mostly do this if things feel relevant to the narrative we're playing. For example, there's a weird weather chart I found on the discord that I've used in my games with friends because one of the PCs was interested in weather related phenomena for backstory reasons. This isn't homebrew, but I also have access to the Storm and Root expansion, and may pull things from there as well. That has rules for airships and submersibles, more character creation options, and new hazards.
