About the adventure

Ten days ago, the world went dark. Five days ago, They came. Keep moving forward. Don't lose hope. Stay in the light." This chilling mantra defines the grim reality of Ten Candles, a game of profound tragic horror unlike any other. Here, the last vestiges of hope are embodied by ten small, flickering candles—each a fragile beacon against an encroaching, unknown despair. You and your fellow survivors will collaboratively forge a visceral, heartbreaking story of humanity's final stand, exploring the truths you desperately cling to and the poignant tales you tell when the end is undeniably certain. Prepare for an unforgettable emotional journey where every choice echoes. Your desperate journey through this fading world is intimately dictated by the very light around you. Each of the ten candles illuminates a distinct scene, a fragile moment in your unfolding narrative. As a candle naturally dwindles and extinguishes, or is dramatically snuffed out by a failed action against the overwhelming darkness, the scene immediately shifts. This unique, visceral mechanic ensures a dynamic, ever-changing narrative, constantly escalating tension and propelling your story towards its inevitable, poignant conclusion. This is the definitive experience for players who crave deeply collaborative storytelling, intense emotional resonance, and a powerful narrative focus. Together, we will weave a compelling, character-driven tale where every choice carries immense weight and every flicker of light holds profound meaning. This one-shot delivers a complete, impactful narrative in a single session, yet its improvisational nature ensures every game is a unique, profoundly memorable journey. As your GM, I am dedicated to facilitating a safe, immersive, and unforgettable environment, prioritizing atmosphere and the unfolding story. While the ultimate fate is predetermined, the story you forge will be uniquely yours and profoundly memorable. All are welcome to join this intense, one-shot experience.

About me

I'm a lifelong roleplaying enthusiast with 25 years of experience at the table. My journey into creating immersive worlds began early, captivated by the art and stories of games like Key to the Kingdom with my dad. In grade school, I was already designing simple board games and stories to share with classmates. The discovery of Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and eventually Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition in my preteens truly set my path. My Journey in Gaming & Creation: 🎲 Diverse TTRPG Experience: From Warhammer 40,000 and Battletech to Shadowrun and Vampire: The Masquerade, I've explored a wide spectrum of RPG and tabletop games. 🌳 LARP & Worldbuilding Roots: My teens saw me dive into LARPing, which fueled my passion for worldbuilding and writing for my own homebrew setting, 'Ae'oh'. ✍️ Published Creator: I've poured immense care into developing 'Ae'oh' through many revisions, eventually publishing gaming materials under the name GM Gene. 🤝 Creative Collaboration: My amazing fiancée, my "art sorceress," visually brings my worlds to life. While she focuses on the art, I dedicate myself to cartography, storytelling, and worldbuilding. 📚 Shared Publications: Together, we've published content for various games we love. 🚀 Future Endeavors: We're now working towards making our shared passion our full-time endeavor as artists, game developers, and storytellers. I absolutely love collaborating and sharing ideas, and I genuinely hope we'll get to share a table soon and create some unforgettable stories together!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation for Ten Candles is a deeply collaborative and immersive process, taking approximately 15-30 minutes at the very start of our session. You'll work together, building your characters improvisationally, allowing your backstories and personalities to organically intertwine and emerge as we play. You'll work together with your fellow survivors to define key aspects of your character, including: 🎭 Virtue & Vice: A single word, short phrase, or idiom that encapsulates your character's core strength and their most significant flaw or temptation. Examples: Virtue - Loyalty, Resourceful, "Never Give Up"; Vice - Cowardice, Selfish, "Every Man for Himself" 👤 Concept: Your character's name, appearance, and a brief outline of who they are in this dying world. Example: "Sarah, a young mechanic with grease-stained overalls and a haunted look in her eyes, always trying to fix things." 🌟 Moments: These are your character's deepest hopes, expressed as a "Hail Mary" event they wish to achieve. Keep it succinct and clear, as it will guide your desperate actions. Example: "I want to find my little sister, who was lost when the lights went out." or "I want to broadcast a message to anyone still out there." 💔 Brinks: The antithesis of your hope, a Brink is your character's darkest fear, deepest guilt, or mental breaking point—a truly unforgiving punch to their story. Example: "Witnessing someone being consumed by the darkness." or "Being forced to abandon a friend to save myself." No prior preparation is needed; just bring your creativity and a willingness to explore the depths of human emotion in the face of inevitable doom.

Safety

How GM Gene creates a safe table

our safety and comfort at the table are paramount, especially given the dark and tragic themes inherent in Ten Candles. We will maintain an open and respectful environment where player discretion is always honored. Due to the game's unique candle-driven pacing, there will be no planned breaks, and breaks during play are not recommended to preserve immersion. While the improvisational nature means the narrative can unfold in unexpected ways, I am committed to applying appropriate content tags and will communicate openly about potential sensitive topics. As such, I will tag the more common themes that we've seen in our own Ten Candles games. If you have specific concerns that you'd like to address before game, I'm happy to listen. Additionally the option is always there to run a separate game with your specific limits or theme. Our primary safety tool will be X, N, and O Cards, which allow players to signal their comfort levels and establish clear boundaries instantly. Following the game, we will have a dedicated cool-down period, or Aftercare, providing a safe space to reflect on the story and decompress from the emotional intensity.
