About the adventure

This hard-to-find campaign was created as an alternative to Curse of Strahd but it became something wonderful and magical of its own. I've altered it to allow for higher level characters as a sequel for those who finally kill Strahd and escape Barovia, (or who woke up on a normal day to find themselves transported here mysteriously) only to end up in another strange land whose customs and challenges will have the PCs tangled in another web (sometimes literally) of warring factions, dark forests, darker cities, and political machinations that make Barovia look like a child's game. You don't need to know anything about Foundry or even D&D to play this game. You get a free out-of-game session 0 to create your character, go over the rules, learn how to use the virtual tabletop, and answer any questions you might have. And remember: all questions are valid when you don't know the answer. Join us!

About me

I got into D&D back in the olden days when the game was young and after all this time I'm still not bored with it! Playing is fun but I find DMing more rewarding as I love to create new places, scenarios, and characters, and to cook up original plots and adventures. I love to make maps and guide players through them, but I also appreciate theater of the mind when maps can be too limiting. I love teaching new people to play, so feel free to message me if you are too intimidated to join a group. Solo games are always an option!

Character creation

Creating your character

You can create your characters ahead of time in D&D Beyond and import them into Foundry (using the Beyond20 browser extension - instructions available on my Discord channel), or create them directly in Foundry. Your stats should be standard array or point-buy (if you don't know what that means, message me and I'll walk you through it). Our starting level is 10, and yes, you will be allowed some starting magic items. I'll explain how that will work once we go over your character concept. I love to pull in character backstories, so hit me up with your ideas!

The current party

The party is currently level 10.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a working microphone and a Discord account for voice and chat. I don't use cameras because I find it distracts too much from immersion, so you won't need one. You will need a computer capable of accessing the internet and a browser capable of running Foundry VTT through a link I will send to you via The Forge (a hosting service for FoundryVTT). To begin, simply join the campaign and send me a message on StartPlayingGames.

What dysonrules brings to the table

I like to balance terrifying encounters with more lighthearted scenarios, fun NPCs, and unexpected situations. I believe the Rule of Cool generally wins over Rules as Written, so if your character wants to do something outlandish that sounds completely awesome, I'm all for tweaking the rules and the rolls to allow it. If you want gritty realism, this is not the campaign for you, but if you're looking to escape into a land of mystery and gothic horror with the chance to bond with a fun group (and maybe make friends for life), you've come to the right place!

Homebrew rules

I have a large list of things we will go over prior to the game, including some homebrew methods (but nothing is out of the ordinary, for example, drinking a potion is a bonus action but administering a potion to another is an action, and using an action to down or administer a potion will give the full benefit of the potion without a roll). That sort of thing.

Safety

How dysonrules creates a safe table

Safety rules and regulations will be explained in detail in session 0 and anytime a question comes up, the player will have access to DM me at any time. Additionally, if I sense tension at all within the group, I will address it immediately and we will discuss the situation like adults. (Privately, at first, in order to avoid putting anyone on the spot, and only involving others if it becomes necessary.) Communication is key.
