About the adventure

Have you always wanted to try Dungeons & Dragons but felt overwhelmed by the rulebooks, the stats, or just figuring out where to begin? This session is built just for you. Whether you’ve never touched a d20 in your life or just want a little guidance before diving into your first game, you’ll leave this session with a character you’re excited to play and a solid understanding of how the game works. This is a relaxed, no-pressure walkthrough of the character creation process using the 2024 Player’s Handbook and D&D Beyond. We’ll cover ability scores, classes, backgrounds, races, and how to make choices that fit both your concept and the mechanics. Along the way, we’ll talk about how the game is played, answer your questions in real time, and explain everything in simple, easy-to-understand language. There’s no rulebook required, and no prior experience needed—just bring your curiosity, your imagination, and a working mic. By the end, you’ll have a fully created Level 1 character, a better sense of what D&D is all about, and the confidence to join your first game. Whether you’re preparing for a campaign, a one-shot, or just testing the waters, this session is the perfect first step into the world of tabletop roleplaying.

About me

I’m a game master with over 9 years of experience running tabletop RPGs, primarily in Dungeons & Dragons 5e and Forged in the Dark systems like Blades in the Dark and Scum & Villainy. I’m a forever GM by choice, crafting immersive stories and helping players connect with the world and each other is what I enjoy most. My GMing style is story-driven and player-focused. Rules are important, but they’re there to support the narrative—not get in the way of cool ideas or fun moments. I build worlds that invite players to interact, explore, and leave a mark. I’m patient and flexible, especially with new players, and I work hard to make sure everyone at the table feels comfortable and included. Over the years, I’ve run long-standing ongoing campaigns for friends and family, and have spent the past year running a successful in-person campaign with a group of random newer acquaintances who’ve since become close friends. Whether someone is diving into their first session or bringing years of experience, I aim to make every game collaborative, engaging, and fun.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create your character together during this session, step by step. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. I will walk you through every choice, from class and ancestry to stats and background. We will use the 2024 Player’s Handbook rules, and characters will start at Level 1. Characters will be built on D&D Beyond using a free account. No other books are needed. This session is designed for brand-new players, so you can ask questions at any time and learn as we go.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To join the session, please make sure you have the following: • A steady internet connection • A free D&D Beyond account: www.dndbeyond.com • A Discord account: www.discord.com • A working microphone for voice chat No additional software is needed. Everything else will be explained during the session.

What Wes brings to the table

I provide access to the 2024 Player’s Handbook on D&D Beyond for character creation. This gives you access to all currently available official options, even if you do not own the book yourself. (If you enjoy the game, I do recommend purchasing the book for yourself.) During the session, I will guide you through building a character that matches both your concept and the mechanics of the game. Whether you have a full idea or no clue where to start, I will help you create something you’re excited to play. My approach is welcoming, patient, and beginner-focused. I explain things clearly, encourage questions, and adapt to different learning styles. The goal is to give you the tools and confidence to step into your first D&D game feeling prepared and supported.

Homebrew rules

There are no homebrew rules used in this session. We will be creating characters using official content from the 2024 Player’s Handbook on D&D Beyond.

Safety

How Wes creates a safe table

While this is not a narrative gameplay session, we will still reference in-game situations and content during character creation. To ensure a safe and respectful space, we will use the X, N, and O card system. These can be used verbally or through chat, based on player preference. Since this session is designed for beginners, I will take a moment before we begin to clearly explain how these safety tools work and make sure everyone feels comfortable using them. My goal is to create a supportive environment where all players feel heard and respected.
