The Swamp of Ages
The mysterious Swamp of Ages has begun to expand, encroaching on civilization. No one knows the cause, and new heroes are needed to brave this danger.
About the adventure
This campaign takes place on Iroboro, a crowded island whose central landscape is dominated by Taur-Fen-Dagorlaith, the ancient and mysterious Swamp of Ages. The Swamp itself is filled with ancient ruins, voracious monsters, and legions of enemies hellbent on fighting the players tooth and nail. It is a homebrew setting which I have built and written myself, and is full of sprawling dungeons and perilous swamp creatures with which I hope to challenge new and experienced players alike. The story emphasizes exploration and combat, with the players needing to brave the deep jungle of the Swamp to discover the cause of its mysterious expansion. Ample opportunities for roleplaying and social encounters also exist however, should the Party choose to explore the outlying towns and gather allies in their quest against the Swamp. Built with players of all experience levels in mind, this campaign is perfect for anyone looking to learn the game, try a new build, or run that optimized character you've always dreamed of playing. I hope to strike a balance of casual fun and high-adventure, and give an immersive gaming experience to players who prioritize exploration and combat, but may be looking to expand the depth of their roleplaying skills.

Character creation
Creating your character
Characters should be created before the first session, using Standard Array for stats. You will be starting at Level 1, arriving in the village of Auril to witness the opening ceremonies of the Spring Equinox. You will not start with any magical items, but are otherwise free to select your starting gear. I will provide a short document that contains brief location descriptions that may help inform character creation, although you are welcome to play any class or race that you desire. Please be sure to share your character sheet with me before the first session. Your backstory may contain as much or as little detail as you like, but please note that if it is longer than 2 paragraphs or contains more than 3 NPCs, I cannot promise that all such details will be woven into the story. Please also be sure to confirm all backstory details with me before the first session, to avoid any contradictions. For example, if you dream of playing a character who is the lost child of royalty, you will be disappointed to discover that Iroboro has no royal families. My goal is to help everyone slot into this game and live their best fantasy life, and I am always available to workshop character ideas.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players should be prepared to make an account on Roll20 or Foundry if they haven't already. I will also invite you to my own Discord Server that we will use during play, and to chat with your party members outside of the game.
What Benn Clapp brings to the table
I offer my players interesting tactical combat, an expansive sandbox world to explore, and a variety of hand-drawn maps and character illustrations to help immerse them in the campaign world. When running encounters, I generally stick to Rules as Written, although I am open to creative solutions; for example, if a spellcaster wants to cast a spell in a slightly different way than the rules describe, I sometimes allow an Arcana Check to see if the alternate usage works. I am not picky about physical spell components, except for high-level "get-out-of-jail-free" spells such as Revivify, Reincarnation, or Wish. I will, however, hold the players to keeping track of their consumable gear, such as ammunition and rations. Part of the challenge of this story is surviving the danger of the Swamp, which means prepping for long stretches of traveling in the wilderness.
Homebrew rules
I allow players to choose whether to use a potion as a bonus action or a full action; drinking a healing potion as a full action restores the maximum number of hit points.

How Benn Clapp creates a safe table
I will host a Session 0 before the first session, where I will be sure to ask everyone what they want out of the game. I will also use this meeting to confirm hard boundaries, Lines and Veils, and whether everyone is okay with character deaths. My Discord DMs are open any time, so the Players will have ample opportunity to message me privately with any concerns both before the first session, and throughout the campaign.
