About the adventure

You are citizens of Baldur's Gate, a city flooded with refugees since the disappearance of the neighboring city of Elturel. Amid this surge, you have been contracted to get to the bottom of a rash of murders in the city, but they are connected to something far more insidious. Elturel has been dragged into hell, and your city may well be next. In order to prevent the same fate from befalling Baldur's Gate, you will need to descend into Hell and search for the cause of the Elturel's disappearance. You will face many difficult choices, find some unexpected allies on the way, and you may even have a chance to redeem your greatest foe. Can you save Elturel from its fate and prevent Baldur's Gate from falling?

About me

I have been gaming for 29 years, and GMing for 20 of those. I started out with Battletech and Mechwarrior before getting involved with Dungeons and Dragons 3.5e. That's where I started DMing, and I have gone from running published modules to homebrewing my own campaigns. More recently I have also run the Alien RPG, Bunkers and Badasses, and the Transformers RPG. When I GM, my goal is to tell a story and to bring my players into that story. It's much more interesting when we tell it together.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done in D&D Beyond. Content will be shared for Player's Handbook (2014), Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, The Tortle Package, and Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse. Characters will start at Level 1 and use Standard Array for stats. Premade characters are available.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should create an account on D&D Beyond and download the Beyond20 plugin for interfacing with the VTT. Voice chat will be run through Discord, so players should create a Discord account. VTT will be run on Roll20, so players should create a Roll20 account.

What Dean brings to the table

I run a fairly laid-back game. I am LGBTQIA+ friendly, and I welcome new players. Premade characters are available. Questions are welcome and encouraged at the table. I prefer to use the Rule of Cool, and use the rules as a framework to enable players' ideas. I enjoy doing NPC voices and invite the players to come up with their own, but it is not a requirement.

Homebrew rules

Critical Hits: Maximum damage plus roll any extra dice. Health Potions: Action to drink for maximum numerical healing, or bonus action to roll dice.

Safety

How Dean creates a safe table

During Session 0, I will use the Consent Checklist as well as check in with players and identify any subjects that are uncomfortable to them. I also like to use the Green, Yellow, Red Light system (similar to X, N, O's) for players to express their comfort level during game. My players are welcome to speak up at any time if they are uncomfortable with something.
