About the adventure

Want to learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons? Hi, my name is Scott, and I have been DMing D&D for about 8 years. Almost every player I have had at my table has been brand new to D&D at our first session, and I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing more and more people into this hobby that I love. My favorite part of being a DM is when a new player has their first "Eureka!" moment and comes up with some wild, creative solution to an in-game problem and pulls off something crazy and memorable. This one-shot is intended to be a silly, campy introduction to the basics of D&D. Players will choose from a handful of classic RPG characters, go through a comical "basic training montage," then embark on a short romp through the woods to help out an overly-serious Paladin with a cartoonish group of miscreants. This will also serve as a simple, streamlined introduction to FoundryVTT, a virtual tabletop I like to use to simulate playing the game on an actual tabletop. It is relatively easy to use from the player side, only requires an internet browser, and will add a fun visual and interactive element to the adventure. If you're looking to get into the game but aren't sure about committing to a long campaign yet, this is the perfect introduction for you! If you'd like to play but the time doesn't work for you, feel free to message me and we'll try to find a slot that will!

About me

Hi! My name is Scott. As with so many groups, I was the guy who got my friends into D&D 5E back in 2017 by offering to learn how to DM, and I've been doing it since. I've run several long form campaigns for multiple groups as well as various one-shots, both in-person and online. I've even convinced several of the group to take up the mantle a few times and become something of a mentor in regards to being a DM. I believe teaching the game is one of my greatest strengths, and I love showing new players how much fun roleplaying games can be. I am what I call a "rules are cool" type of DM, meaning I try to find a line between strict RAW and rule of cool, always looking for ways to use the rules to do whatever cool, imaginative thing my players have come up with. I prefer running published modules and campaigns and adding my own twists to them to creating my own world from scratch. One thing I make an extra effort on is finding ways to create side stories based on the backstories of my PCs. I've found that my players greatly enjoy having their own personal touch on the campaign's plot. I also enjoy fostering my player's creativity and am more than willing to let them derail a campaign and explore things from there. Some of the best stories from my adventures have come when things deviate from the path. I'd love to run a game for you. If I sound like a good fit for you, but my current listings don't work, feel free to send me a message and maybe we can work something out!

Character creation

Creating your character

For this one-shot, we will be using premade characters that players will choose in the lead up to the game session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need a microphone, headphones, and Discord for communication and a web browser to access the game. I ask for headphones to avoid echoing, which can be disruptive in voice chats. We'll be using FoundryVTT, a virtual tabletop with all sorts of fun bells and whistles. I'll provide a link so players can access the game server during play. I will have my camera on and encourage camera use if you are comfortable, but it is totally optional.

What ScoTTRPG brings to the table

I will bring: - Patience, a wealth of game knowledge, and a desire to teach and facilitate - An organized Discord server to best meet your needs as players - A FoundryVTT server to have interactive maps, character sheets, animation effects, the whole nine yards - I will have music in some form to provide ambience - I try my best to do voices for the characters, I like to have fun with it. My style is trying to find ways to make the rules work for you. I am a big fan of the "you can certainly try" mindset.

Safety

How ScoTTRPG creates a safe table

My Discord server has a list of general community rules that basically boil down to "Be excellent to each other." We will go over those in Session 0 as well as some more specific in game rules to make sure we're all having a good time and everyone feels included. My DM's are always open if there are issues, and my server also has a special "SOS" role that you can select that will immediately put your name at the top of the member's list so I can see it more easily. You can also ping me in any channel at any time. This setting will be very light-hearted and fun. There will be a small bit of violence during combat, but will likely not touch on any other potentially sensitive topics.
