About the adventure

While around across the multiverse, characters gain an ticket to board the Ghostlight Express, a spectral yet luxurious train ride to take them across the multiverse but it comes from an afterlife seldom spoken of by mystics or religions. This adventure is a supernatural folk-horror short story, born from the Crooked Moon adventure created by Legends of Avantris, that can expand into a much grander tale in the afterlife of Druskenvald once the players have completed it and agree to continue to the journey (we will discuss this prospect both during the Zero Hour "Session 0" and after the game. On this journey, the train ride isn't a smooth experience for a saboteur had infiltrated the train and is preventing you from reaching your destination. It is up to the players to investigate the train's mishappenings and return the train to course and health.

About me

Hey Gamers, I'm Rafael (you can call me Raf if you join my tables) and I see myself as a very passionate builder of worlds and teller of stories. I am an aspiring game designer/developer for physical and/or digital games and through my tables, I hope I can spark a passion for adventuring and stories similar to - or surpassing - my own. My journey began fairly recent in the history of the hobby, the "great" year of 2021. Well into the COVID-19 Pandemic and my first semester in university, a void of fulfilling creativity and entertainment needed to be filled as I learned to live away from home and all that. Thankfully, D&D 5e has filled that hole and then some and now I am a passionate fan of all things D&D and other TTRPGs like Call of Cthulhu or Kids on Bikes or the Fallout TTRPG.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create level 3 characters with the 5e 2024 core rules and the rules/options presented within the Crooked Moon book (I will provide this book and its contents). Character creation will be handled through D&D Beyond character sheets since Crooked Moon content will be officially supported on the platform. With characters created there, we will be able to have the rolls and other parts of D&D Beyond appear on the Foundry VTT game I will have set up. We will determine stats through the roll 4d6 method. If your total for all rolls combined is < 70, you can reroll the array.

What Rafael Veloz brings to the table

I am providing the access to my owned content on D&D Beyond. This includes the core 5e 2024 rules along with the content to be used on the D&D Beyond Maps, the integrated VTT platform of the toolset. I will also provide sample characters for players to pick up and play with if they don't want the hassle of creating a character in a short time frame that is this one shot. For the purposes of this one shot, we are sticking to the rules as written (RAW) as a default. No homebrew revisions of rules will be added. Any "homebrew rules" are more addition to improve player connections and not towards revising game mechanics. As a part of my DM style, I utilize the following to my games: - I try my best with distinct voices for most characters, playing around with different accents, tones, and more. When attempting cultural accents, I approach them with fun and care. - I provided a mix of well-sourced and handcrafted handouts related to the game at play to add a tactile sense of immersion. - I provided a mix of ambient music and scene-oriented music for important moment such as combats or intense negotiations. - I will provided a visually gratifying yet simple-to-use experience with Foundry as the VTT for players to visually interact with the game and further spark the imagination.

Homebrew rules

Custom Backgrounds. I will allow players to customizes the features given in a background as outlined in the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide. Crunchy Critical. Instead of rolling double the damage dice when you score a critical hit with an attack roll, we will instead take the maximum damage value of the dice and add that to a roll of the damage dice associated with the attack. - Example: You hit with a Greatsword with STR 16 (+3). The damage is then 12 (max damage) + 3 + 2d6 (avg of 7) for a total of 22 damage when normally a crit would be 4d6 (avg 14) + 3 = 17 total. End of Show Star: At the end of each session, the players come together to vote for their "MVP" of the game. This can be based of an MVP moment in combat or just a highlight of a particularly cool, funny, or intense moment engaged by a player. Lingering Pain. Whenever you are stabilized or regain HP while you're reduced to 0 HP, you retain one failed death saving throw until you are no longer Bloodied (half HP). Glancing Blows. When you hit a creature at exactly their AC with an attack roll, the damage it takes is halved. Proficient Helper. When you attempt the Help Action to help another creature's ability check, you must be proficient in the skill or tool if the check uses that proficiency.

Safety

How Rafael Veloz creates a safe table

I will provide a solid Lines and Veils survey (what I refer to as a Green, Yellow, and Red Consent survey) which will narrow down the lines and veils of the players in accordance with the most prevalent content warnings down to the obscure phobias and such. Second for this game is brief period of a "Session Zero" where we finalize characters brought to the game, work out technical issues, and bring forth question on how the game will be played and the content warnings for this horror-themed one shot. As an extra, I will ask to the players during session zero if they consent to having the sessions recorded for the purposes of notetaking improvised moments and for players to look back and evaluate the games further.
