About the adventure

Welcome to Barovia, where the mists are thick, the wine is red, and the queers are absolutely here to cause problems for powerful monsters. This LGBTQ+ inclusive campaign of Curse of Strahd is a dark fantasy horror story rooted in gothic atmosphere, twisted villains, and high-stakes emotion—but also grounded in player safety, meaningful character bonds, and a welcoming table for new and veteran adventurers alike. Whether you're new to D&D or just new to horror, we'll take our time, build our party, and keep consent and comfort at the heart of the story as we face what lurks in the dark together. In Barovia, death isn’t the scariest thing—it’s hopelessness. But this campaign is all about fighting that despair: building relationships, seeking redemption, and creating a found family that refuses to bow to the darkness. You'll play a character with something to fight for—and maybe even something to lose—and together we’ll find clever, compassionate, and creative ways to survive. This is a character-driven sandbox filled with intense NPCs, dangerous choices, and the freedom to shape your fate—just don’t expect the world to hand you magic swords or easy wins. If you love tragic beauty, morally complicated villains, and a little bit of theatrical drama with your dungeon crawls, this game is for you. Come as you are—no experience required, just a willingness to explore, collaborate, and maybe, just maybe, stake a vampire or two. We will be using both the 2014 and 2024 rulesets as I'm still learning the 2024 rules but would like to incorporate them more into my games. We'll primarily be using Discord and Owlbear Rodeo. https://discord.gg/WawWFYRH4p

About me

I’ve been a forever DM of my friend group for the last ten years. I’m a high school English teacher looking to supplement my pay over the summer. I love the camaraderie and teamwork aspect of Dungeons and Dragons, meeting new people, and especially helping new players find a love of the game. I often like to create homebrew worlds with lots of mystery, suspense, drama, and political intrigue. Whether this is your very first Dungeons and Dragons campaign or your 100th, I’m hoping to create an enjoyable experience for you and the rest of your party. I’m currently an English teacher--I’ve previously taught 11th Grade English and am hoping to slide down to 7th or 8th grade English next school year! I have two tuxedo kittens, Oreo and Kevin, and my favorite guilty pleasure is binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy over the summer.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation can happen before session zero, but I think especially if you're new to D&D, at least keeping an open mind about the kind of character you want to play would be a good idea. I'll go over what you can expect from the campaign and as you meet the other players, you all can make final decisions on the aspects of your characters.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

As long as you have access to discord, you're good to go! Once you sign up, I'll invite you to my D&D server to begin looking over campaign information and character creation inspiration. If you can create characters on DnD Beyond, even better, but I can also give you a fillable pdf character sheet to create if you prefer that.

What Hannah Grover (katwenty) brings to the table

I have access to The Player's Handbook for 2014 rules and also a set of the 2024 rules as well. I am definitely going to immerse you in a spooky, horror-filled, gritty and realistic gameplay. I will be ensuring that everyone is aware of the upcoming sessions and any preparations that need to be done by the players beforehand. I will be ensuring that boundaries are not crossed and that this remains a safe and healthy environment. I will do my best to ensure that everyone has time and space to speak and to play their characters as they wish to.

Homebrew rules

In this game, all death saving throws must be whispered to the GM and not revealed to the other players.

Safety

How Hannah Grover (katwenty) creates a safe table

I will be sending a link to a google form that will ask about what boundaries and triggers you may have so that we can keep it a safe environment for everyone. We will also have a rule in place that you can just DM me if I missed something or there is an issue that needs to be raised before we go further with play.
