About the adventure

Beneath the ever-watchful eye of the Crooked Moon lies Druskenvald, a land caught between life and death, where time weeps and the old ways whisper. Aboard the spectral Ghostlight Express, your soul arrives—reborn into a strange new body, stripped of memory, and thrust into a realm of endless night, eerie customs, and uncanny truths. Here, superstitions are survival tools, and folk tales aren’t just stories—they’re warnings. This campaign is steeped in folk horror: a genre where isolation, occult traditions, and warped morality shape the land as much as its people. Expect a slow-burn mystery with creeping dread, emotional character arcs, and strange creatures pulled from the edge of memory. Whether you’re confronting the witches of the Midnight Moon, surviving the bizarre rituals of Wickermoor Hollow, or unearthing your own forgotten past, you’ll find the horrors here are personal—and the scars run deep.

About me

Hello, one and all my name is Rane and I have been a DM/GM for many games over the course of the past 8 years. I have a player-first mentality when it comes to my games and empathize with player choice and creativity. I have run 6-7 large-scale campaigns and about 15-20 One shots during my time but nothing beats watching characters grow in a world of my design. I am a rule of cool style dm where rules are kinda an afterthought if it means the enjoyment of the game goes up.

That’s everything for now! I can’t wait to tell this story with you under the light of the Crooked Moon. 🌑🌕

What Rane brings to the table

As your Game Master, I’m here to offer you more than just a game—I’m crafting a haunting, character-driven story we get to tell together. Here’s what you can expect from me every step of the way: đŸŽ™ïž Immersive Storytelling - I perform character voices for major NPCs and eldritch beings alike—expect whispering witches, eerie train conductors, and mournful ghosts tho im no Brennan Lee Muligan. - You’ll explore a world full of vivid description and surreal encounters designed to feel like you’re walking through a haunted fairytale. - I use atmospheric music, ambient soundscapes, and visual aids to bring the world of Druskenvald to life. 💀 Tone-Driven Folk Horror - Expect slow-burn tension, moral ambiguity, and characters shaped by trauma, hope, and transformation. - You won’t just fight monsters—you’ll uncover what they represent. - I’ll always check in with the group to keep horror fun, not harmful. We’ll use tools like Lines & Veils, X/N/O cards, and Stars & Wishes to stay emotionally safe. ⚔ Meaningful Combat - Combat is dangerous, intentional, and usually tied to the story. There will be fewer encounters—but they matter. - I favor theater of the mind with strong visual prompts, but tactical VTT support is available when needed. - I lean toward Rules-as-Written, but I fully embrace the Rule of Cool when it makes for a more dramatic or cinematic moment. 🧙 Character-Centric Play Your backstories will shape the campaign. I tailor scenes, NPC reactions, and horror moments to reflect your characters. We’ll explore themes like forgotten identity, fate, rebirth, and personal sacrifice. Roleplay is rewarded, and player agency is central. You will change this world—and it will change you. 🎁 What You’ll Receive: A fully functiong VTT A LGBTQIA2S+ safe enviornment A diverse discord server Player notes, maps, and mechanics And a GM who’s always open to feedback and focused on creating a respectful, creative space for everyone

Safety

How Rane creates a safe table

My top priority is creating a space where players feel safe, respected, and fully supported—especially important in a campaign like The Crooked Moon, which explores themes of dread, trauma, and the unknown. 📄 Session 0 – Setting Expectations Before the game begins, we’ll have a full Session 0 to go over: Tone & Themes – What kind of horror we’re engaging with (folk, gothic, emotional, etc.) Player Goals – Whether you prefer roleplay, exploration, or mechanics Group Boundaries – Discussion of acceptable topics, tone, and playstyle I will also provide a Lines & Veils document via Google Forms or Notion, which allows you to confidentially mark topics that are: ✅ Comfortable ⚠ Okay with warning ❌ Off-limits (Lines) or fade-to-black only (Veils) Please note that the Content Warnings of this game are purly a precaution and you will have the option to exclude any of them. 🛑 X, N, and O Cards (Digital & In-Session) We use a simple X, N, and O system to navigate safety in real-time: X – Stop immediately. Used when a player feels uncomfortable and needs a scene or topic to end right away. N – Neutral or nearing discomfort. A signal to slow down or steer the scene differently. O – Everything’s good. Used to check in and show comfort during intense roleplay. These signals can be: Typed in chat (for online play) Verbally stated Held up via a hand gesture or emoji in video play 🔄 Aftercare & Debrief At the end of each session, we’ll do a quick Stars & Wishes check-in: ⭐ What you enjoyed 🌠 What you’d like to see more or less of next time Additionally, players are always welcome to message me privately after any session to share feedback or discomfort they didn’t want to express in front of others. For emotionally intense sessions, I offer an optional emotional debrief where we can talk about how certain scenes felt and make adjustments moving forward. 🏃 Open Door Policy At any point during play, anyone can step away or leave without explanation. Your mental and emotional health always comes first.
