About the adventure

"Tales from the Yawning Portal" is a D&D module published by Wizards of the Coast. It was first released in 2017 and is a collection of seven classic D&D adventures that have been updated for the fifth edition of the game. I like to run this module as separate but related adventures, allowing players to change out characters or continue with one through all adventures. Overall, "Tales from the Yawning Portal" provides a range of classic D&D adventures that can be run individually or as part of a larger campaign. The adventures included in "Tales from the Yawning Portal" are: - The Sunless Citadel - This adventure takes place in a ruined fortress that was once home to a powerful dragon. The players must explore the fortress, battle goblins and other creatures, and confront the dragon to complete their quest. - The Forge of Fury - This adventure takes place in an abandoned dwarven stronghold that has been taken over by orcs. The players must battle their way through the stronghold to reach the forge at the heart of the dungeon. - The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan - This adventure takes place in a long-lost temple dedicated to an ancient god. The players must explore the temple, solve puzzles, and battle dangerous creatures to uncover its secrets. - White Plume Mountain - This adventure takes place in a volcanic mountain that is home to powerful magic weapons. The players must navigate traps and battle powerful guardians to claim the weapons. - Dead in Thay - This adventure takes place in a massive dungeon complex controlled by a group of evil wizards. The players must infiltrate the complex, battle the wizards and their minions, and rescue prisoners being held captive. - Against the Giants - This adventure takes place in three separate dungeons that are home to giants of different kinds. The players must battle their way through each dungeon, defeating the giants and their minions, to stop a plot to invade civilization. - Tomb of Horrors - This adventure is widely considered one of the deadliest dungeons ever created. The players must navigate a series of traps and puzzles in a tomb created by a mad wizard to claim a powerful artifact.

About me

Hail and welcome Adventurers! My name is Sean, and I have been playing TTRPGs since the late 1990s in games like Hero Quest and Dragon Strike. I've been involved in D&D for 8 years and have a reputation for crafting intricate, memorable storylines and building fully realized worlds that bring my players' imaginations to life. I believe that the key to a successful D&D game is communication and engagement. Likewise, I'm an excellent communicator and am always looking for new ways to challenge and engage my players. I favor playing Adventure Modules but will often add homebrew to the campaign with thought-provoking encounters designed to test players' skills and wits, and I'm always open to new ideas and suggestions for changes from my players. My ultimate goal is to make sure that every player has an enjoyable and memorable experience, no matter their level of experience with D&D. If you're looking for a talented and experienced Dungeon Master to run a paid D&D game, I would be honored to bring your imagination to life. I have a good understanding of the mechanics of D&D. I'm dedicated to creating a comprehensive world unique to each new game, role-playing well-developed NPCs, and narrating equal parts exciting & challenging encounters that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Join me for a game!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation You will begin at level 1 and level at specific milestones through the campaign. You can choose an additional feat to start with. To Consider Dexterity is the most valuable ability score in the game, to counter this: Spheres may flavor the spellcasting ability, such as having an INT-based Warlock (Int, Wis, or Cha Only) The highest among your Dex, Int, Wis, or Cha can be applied to your initiative. Stat Rolls - Group decision Individually roll 4d6kh3, twice, reroll all 1s, taking the better result OR Collectively roll 4d6kh3, and reroll all 1s, for everyone to use one stat array, twice, taking the better result. Choose where the scores are applied. Races & Classes All official 5e classes and subclasses will be permitted (PHB, XGE, TCA, etc.) A diverse party of classes, no duplicates, please Characters can multiclass. Alignment Alignments are reserved for creatures from the outer planes and creatures tightly connected to them (such as, for example, paladins and clerics). Otherwise, they are replaced with the idea that it's not so much about how the character acts, as it is about where they side in the major struggle of the setting, with good/evil being the major alignment and lawful/chaotic being minor. Though, of course, it does at least suggest how one might behave. For this campaign I expect characters to be on the side of good.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be using Discord for voice chat. I ask that you have a quality microphone and can speak English fluently. I don't expect voice acting but a sense of roleplay is encouraged. Broad knowledge of the rules is not required. I can teach as we play. Dice rolling will be done entirely in Foundry VTT and your character sheet can be imported from DDB or other sources directly into the game. Players should come prepared with characters of their choice or can use a premade character. Communication will happen through Discord, there is no need to install anything for the use of the VTT.

What Sevax D&D brings to the table

Prepared scenes built in FoundryVTT on customized battle maps made in Dungeon Draft and Wonder Draft. Me on video and voice for 3.5 to 4 hours, role-playing NPC characters, narrating the world, and running battles. Me prepping a minimum of 3.5 to 4 hours a week outside of the scheduled game. Homebrew materials and incorporation of other homebrew at request.

Homebrew rules

"It is the spirit of the game, not the letter of the rules, which is important" - Gary Gygax. Inspired by the spirit of the game, these house rules refine core mechanics for a more fluid and engaging experience. Our goal is to prioritize narrative and collaborative storytelling. Have a rule you enjoy? Let's discuss working it in! Core Mechanics Any Order Action Economy You can use your action, bonus action, and movement in any order. You may split your movement between your actions as you see fit. Attunement Forget attunement delays. You can use a magic item's benefits immediately. However, any curses or drawbacks will only reveal themselves through use. This encourages experimentation but adds an element of risk to new loot. Combat Initiative You may voluntarily lower your initiative to act after a specific ally. This allows for better teamwork, but be aware that letting a block of enemies act before your group can be risky. Concealing Spells You may attempt to conceal the casting of a spell by making a Stealth check against an enemy’s passive Perception. This allows for more creative and subtle uses of magic. Creature Group Initiatives Similar creatures will share an initiative roll to speed up combat. Large groups may be broken into smaller squads. Critical Hits: Max Damage On a critical hit, you deal maximum damage for your base weapon/spell dice, then roll the critical dice as normal. (Example: A 1d6+3 attack crits for 6+3 damage, and you then roll an additional 1d6). Healing Potions Using a potion of healing on yourself is a bonus action. Using one on another creature is an action. Reactive Stealth If you are discovered, you can use your reaction to make an immediate Stealth check against the discoverer's Perception. Success grants you a fleeting moment to reposition or hide again. This is for quick, last-ditch efforts to vanish, not sustained invisibility. Re-flavoring You are encouraged to re-flavor any weapon, spell, or ability to better fit your character's concept. As long as the core mechanics remain unchanged and the DM approves, your creativity is the only limit. Team Inspiration Inspiration is a shared resource. The party has a group pool that can hold a maximum of six inspiration points at a time. Use them to help yourselves and your allies!
