About the adventure

Takhisis the Dragon Queen has returned to the world of Krynn. Across the land, her armies of Fanatical draconians wage a brutal war of conquest. As the Dragon Armies march on the unprepared nation of Solamnia, only the defenders of the city of Kalaman stand in their way. However, the Dragon Armies want more than to simply crush their foes. An ancient evil in the Dragon Queen's service seeks a magical weapon that could dominate Krynn for all time. In this War of the Lance, no choice is easy, and your party can alter the course of history for all time. This module, flavored and edited to bring your characters to life, will follow their adventure from levels 1-11, with the goal of defeating the Dragon Queen and her minions in the world of Krynn.

About me

I have been a Forever GM since I started playing D&D 3.5e at 12 years old, so why not get paid to do something I have a passion for? I run multiple systems and believe in giving each PC their time in the limelight, and that the collaborative storytelling experience of TTRPGs can be a great escape. We never stopped playing pretend, we just made it fair. I have DM'd for a podcast project, Discordant Dungeons, and ran professional games in-person and online as a freelancer in Pullman, WA and Japan from 2017 till present. I USE NO AI IN ANY OF MY PROJECTS. You're paying for a real person. My current systems that I can run (in order of preference) are Tales of the Valiant, D&D 5e (2014), Marvel Multiverse, DIE the RPG, Avatar: Legends, Ronin, Henshin! and Goblin Slayer TRPG. Pricing: Running a Pre-Made module/adventure from my Library-$50 PP (Per Player) Running a Pre-Made Module I have to buy-$50 PP + Cost of Module upfront Running a fully custom (To your specs) Homebrew Campaign/Adventure-$75 PP

I wish I could pick every tag for James! Seriously, he deserves them all! He’s not just inclusive, creative, and super knowledgeable about so many TTRPG systems (and how to mix them together in the *coolest* ways), he’s also built this gorgeous, deeply detailed world that’s perfect for both seasoned players and total newbies. James was actually my very first DM, and I couldn’t have dreamed up a better one. He’s been endlessly patient, kind, and understanding, always ready with answers to my many (many!) questions as I learned the ropes. He balances everything so well- RP, combat, character arcs- and makes so much room for player creativity, meeting our ideas with genuine excitement and joy, as well as providing his own ideas to more easily incorporate our own into the campaign! One of my absolute favorite things about James is his confidence. He believes in his game, and it shows! But at the same time, he’s always asking what we liked, what could improve, and how to make the next session even better. His combo of creativity and openness is unmatched in the creative space. Truly, this is the best. James is the best. If you get a chance to be in one of his games, take it!

I've played with him in many campaigns in the past, both premade modules and homebrew campaigns. He has a knack for world building. He skillfully incorporates your backstory (brutally so, and I mean that as a compliment!), and places you in difficult positions, making your character question their motives and beliefs. If you want a complex narrative and to have your character take part in grand plots and fierce and deadly combat, this could be the GM for you!

James is a thoughtful and creative GM who excels at weaving player backstories into the narrative in a way that feels organic. When we played Icewind Dale, I had a generic local backstory that made me feel more like an NPC more than a character. He helped me develop the character throughout the campaign to feel more like an individual with a story to tell. He did this again for this game after my first character died in the first session and I got to make a new one. While James can be a stickler for rules, he prioritizes player enjoyment. If something isn’t fun or is disruptive, he’s open to finding creative, story-driven solutions—whether that means bringing a character back in a satisfying way or helping craft a new one that fits smoothly into the ongoing narrative. He really enjoys running homebrew items and has fun balancing encounters with them. One of my favorites that was used in this campaign was a sword of summoning ducks that provided many chances for distractions and an unlimited supply of food.

There is a lot so bear with me, and also forgive my grammatical errors. There is a lot to cover. First James is a very good world builder and is happy to tie your character into the world. And this is only one part of how he is with characters. I would say his strength is long, narratively rich campaigns. As long as you are clear about where you would like your character's story to go he will do his best to help you get there and make that goal feel earned. He treats backstories and NPC with respect and is happy to keep to certain boundaries with your backstory. Anytime I was anxious about a story beat he was quick to assure me about things and give those assurances without spoilers which takes great skill. So if you are clear about your wants and your boundaries they will be listened to within reason. The reason being that they don't inhibit other player's fun or other player's feeling of safety. He is happy to homebrew with you and try to make things work to again work in world and also not step on other player's toes. It is OKAY to power game with him. Give him your most broken build and he'll still make you sweat in combat. I would say that if you want rp heavy with very light or easy combat this isn't the DM for you. He will challenge you but if you know your stuff or think well on your feet you'll get my favorite reaction which is. ..."There goes my plans, well done guys." Talking about thinking well on the spot he is very adaptable and thinks well on his feet and tries to keep choices open for players, even if it ruins plans, while also balancing keeping us engaged with the plot. Here is some things you need to know. Advocate for yourself. If you think the ruling was a little harsh or the combat a little hard tell him, respectfully, don't just insult him of course. But anytime I've had a concern it was handled quickly with direct communication. He will be an advocate for you if you don't know how to approach another player. I would say that he is inclusive and safe place. I am a Bi woman, and he has been respectful of both my gender and sexuality, same with my fiancé who is a Bi man. In conclusion: RP rich, narratively rich, tough combat, flexible World building, be direct in communication. I've played with him for about 3 ish years now, and I've been happy with the stories I've been able to experience.

Character creation
Creating your character

As it is the trickiest bit of any TTRPG, new or old players alike, I will meet FREE OF CHARGE before Session 1 to help with all aspects of character creation, but here is the Need-To-Know. Tales of The Valiant can take DnD 5E characters, so if you want to stick with that you may, though they are going to be slightly underpowered. For ToV Character creation, the main difference is Race/Species is now split in two Lineage (Nature and physicality, your DNA) and Heritage (Nurture, where and how you were raised). Any player options from my library does NOT need approval, however if you want a homebrew class, lineage, etc, or something from a published work I don't have, I need to check it out for balancing. Once your character choices are set, you'll need to get me the information so I can program it into foundry. YOU ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO HAVE A SHEET FOR YOUR OWN REFERENCE but I need one I have access to on the VTT. Finally, I'll need a character backstory. If you don't want to write one we can discuss the basics and your goals for the character. All of this will be done or put in motion at Session 0 at the latest.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

You will need to make a Discord account for voice, and our games will be over my Foundry VTT server.

What James brings to the table

I provide access to Foundry VTT, as well as access to all digital books in my library, both on DNDBeyond and PDFs. I perform character voices and accents, put on background music and ambience, and balance the Rule of Cool with logic as best I can, but do the same to Rules as Written. (Ex. Sorry, no commoner railguns) I prioritize Rules as Intended, or the Spirit of the Law for your budding lawyers out there. I heavily balance combat. This is not to say I try to be super tactical, though I can be, but what I mean is this: My responsibility as your DM is to balance the game for you guys. If you choose to have no dedicated healer in your party, then it is my responsibility to make sure you have access healing resources. If you have a hard time with combat, I'll probably make things a little easier so it doesn't detract. If you routinely crush me with the skills of a professional strike team, I'll up the ante. My biggest skill, and promise, is working your character into the story and utilizing their backstory. Every character will get their time in the sun where their personal story is more focused on alongside the overall arc. The thing to remember is while there are no main characters, everyone will get to be the focus for a while.

Homebrew rules

All of these are optional, as this is your game too, but these are my standard House Rules. BG3 Spellcasting-As long as you have the Action/Bonus Action/Reaction resources, it doesn't matter what level of spell it is you cast. You can cast a level 1 Cure wounds as an action and Level 2 healing word as long as you have the slots and resources. Potions-All potions can be taken as either an action or bonus action. HEALING potions do full healing if drank or fed carefully as an action, roll for healing if chugging as Bonus Action Initiative ties-PCs have priority, if you tie with a player work it out between yourselves. You can either always have one go first, or switch each round to allow for maximum shenanigans Level up HP-Roll for HP. IF you roll LESS than the average of your die, you may choose to keep the low roll OR take half your dies value. Ex. A monk rolls a d8 to level up and gets a 2 for their HP increase. They can keep the 2 or instead take 4. Non-Lethal Spells- if you make your spell with an attack roll, you can declare it as non lethal within reason. Ex. An Eldritch blast to the knee can be non-lethal.

How James creates a safe table

In session 0, we will go over the tone for the campaign you guys want, whether it will be a bit more whimsical or gritty etc, as well as what things are likely to come up and what everyone is comfortable with, along with House Rules. After the game, both immediately and in the days after, I'll privately check in with everyone and if there are problems set about rectifying them. I will ask anyone that has private triggers they don't want to share to send me a lines and veils writeup, and I can go over that with you if it is your first time using it.
