About the adventure

This campaign was designed with intricate lore and challenging combat front and center. Players will have the opportunity to uncover the mystery of the sun's disappearance, interact with various survivors, and make plenty of allies... and enemies. The moment-to-moment gameplay will focus primarily on exploration and survival. Players will navigate the barren and broken streets of Frithergard, capital of the kingdom of Verdanheim. I have implemented what I call the "haven system"; players will be unable to short rest unless they are in a covered shelter and there are no enemies nearby, and unable to long rest unless in a settlement or sufficiently-barricaded shelter. They will have to remain fed and watered, as well as rested, to prevent exhaustion and death. Paramount to this campaign's experience is roleplaying with any and every facet of the world; characters, creatures, environment, factions, players will interact with all manner of friend, foe, both, and neither. Players may be able to completely sidestep some combat encounters using their wits and charm. Sometimes, though, the players will have no choice but to fight. Combat will be almost as prominent as player roleplaying in this campaign, and will largely consist of tough enemies and tricky combat circumstances. Make no mistake, your characters very well may perish... Players will have a lot of freedom with the actions they take and decisions they make in the campaign, and are encouraged to think outside the box to solve problems. I operate primarily on "rule of cool", and will allow players to try almost anything, as long as it's physically feasible!

About me

Hi, I'm Dylan! I have been a GM for 6 years, since I jumped in both feet tied by homebrewing my own campaign from the ground up. As an avid reader and writer, I homebrew almost everything I make, down to the varied locales and intricate lore of my settings. Also, as an avid actor, I like to give my NPCs larger-than-life personas and voices, as well as reasons for players to get invested. My #1 priority as a GM is to tune into the experience of my players. I curate everything in my games to what my players seek from a campaign; I like to weave their characters into the fabric of the setting's story, so that everyone has something to fight for... and something to lose. Challenging or easy, lighthearted or dark and dreary, sci-fi or fantasy, modern or medieval: anything you could possibly want out of a world to wander, I'll work hard to make it a reality!

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll begin our journey with a good old-fashioned Session 0! I encourage you to bring at least a concept of the character you wish to play. Keep in mind we are using the 2024 D&D 5e rules. I start at Level 3 for the purposes of most classes being able to choose their subclass out the gate. This concept CAN include official and/or homebrew content. We will get to know each other and discuss the campaign itself, both lore-wise and gameplay-wise. We will also either start character creation from the concept you bring or put the final touches on your character during this session. For my players, I like to weave their characters into the settings. I can help players integrate their character into the culture and society of Verdanheim, and answer any questions they may have. In general, your character should have some sort of goal besides just restoring the forces of nature. Are they trying to find someone in the city? Are they running from someone or something? Are their intentions in Frithergard altruistic or selfish? If you have trouble coming up with answers to these questions or any others, it is both my job and my pleasure to help you out!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A mic and a Discord account will be required for this campaign, as you will need to join the server for the campaign. A D&D Beyond account will also be required, as I will be providing sources and keeping track of character sheets through this service. Finally, please download the program Sigil from D&D Beyond, as this will be how we run the game. Please, please, PLEASE have your sheets handy at all times, and familiarize yourselves with your character's spells and abilities. This will expedite combat and other encounters, as well as allowing you to play your character as naturally and truthfully as possible.

What Dylan K. Hannesson brings to the table

I have access to all three 2024 Core Rulebooks, as well as most of the sourcebooks a player will need to create any kind of character they want. I will enable content sharing on D&D Beyond so you can really stretch your creative muscles. If there is a sourcebook you want to have access to in order to create your character, let me know and we can discuss it further. I want to provide my players with open-ended and varied gameplay, working in as much roleplay as I do challenging enemy encounters, if not more. To this end, I will constantly be checking on my players and tuning in to their experience; every party is different, and I want to tailor the experience to each one. I like to give detailed narration and description, and ask that whenever a player has a question, they ask it ASAP. I never want a player to be lost in the moment. My favorite part of dming is the sheer number of character voices I get to do, including accents, languages, and even modulated voices. Rules-wise, I'm lax and want players to think outside the box and try anything that comes to mind (within logical reason of course). I operate on the Rule of Cool, so anything you want to try that sounds fun, I'll allow.

Homebrew rules

Here is a list of homebrew rules and systems I implement: 1/20 Repercussions: When rolling a d20 test, a natural 1 means not only automatic failure on the check or attack, but the character will also suffer a debuff at the dm's discretion. However, a 20 means automatic success and a buff, also at the dm's discretion. Max Critical Hits: When you roll a natural 20 to attack, you do double the maximum amount of damage possible from the attack, rather than doubling the rolled damage. For instance, a nat 20 on an eldritch blast attack would deal 20 force damage. Flawed Feats: Certain actions a player takes during regular gameplay have a chance to trigger a Flawed Feat, which grants one of the feats available to characters, but at the cost of a mechanical or character flaw associated with the feat. Each time a Flawed Feat is triggered, its effect will be read aloud, and the player that triggered it has the option to either take it or refuse. Combat Timer: To keep combat moving at a decent pace, I will give each player - on their turn - one (1) minute to DECIDE, not execute, what they will do. The timer will be paused for questions and clarification, and will be stopped upon the player initiating their actions for the turn.
