About the adventure

Welcome to the War-Torn World of Krynn The continent of Ansalon trembles as an ancient force stirs. Whispers speak of a dark queen rising, and strange, starless nights have begun to blanket the land. Armies gather, led by armored dragonriders and cloaked in shadow. This is the world of Krynn on the brink of the War of the Lance—a land filled with rich histories, fallen empires, and heroes yet to rise. Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen is a story-driven Dungeons & Dragons campaign set during the earliest days of the Dragon Queen’s invasion. As the people of Solamnia go about their daily lives, unaware of the storm on the horizon, you are drawn into a conflict far larger than yourselves. Whether you're a hopeful knight, a spell-seeker drawn to forbidden lore, or a common soul thrust into legend, your actions will shape the world around you—for better or worse. This game will blend cinematic storytelling, character-driven moments, tactical combat, and moral choices in a high-fantasy war setting. Expect political intrigue, ancient mysteries, dragon cults, battlefield encounters, and a journey from quiet beginnings to epic consequences. You’ll explore haunted ruins, forge uneasy alliances, and confront what it means to be a hero when the world falls into darkness. Whether you're brand new to D&D or a seasoned adventurer, this game welcomes players who enjoy immersive storytelling, character growth, and heroic challenges. If you love the feel of epic fantasy with a tinge of tragedy—think The Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, or Final Fantasy—you’ll feel right at home. Grab your dice, rally your allies, and ready your blades: Krynn needs heroes.

About me

Hey everyone! I’m Megan, but you can call me Meg or Megs. I’m a 27 year old Game Master and D&D player who has been in the TTRPG world for close to 6 years now. I love creating fantasy worlds full of mystery and madness and generally lean more towards high fantasy settings. I mainly run 5e content that I put my own spin on to cater towards what my characters want out of the game. I’ve run many modules from Wild Beyond the Witchlight to Hoard of the Dragon Queen and more! I also have my own homebrew world that I’m constantly adding to. My games mainly cater towards existing players, but I’m always happy to take on new players as well. If you’d love to support myself and my work then I would be honored to run a game for you! Thank you all so much for checking out my games as it truly helps me continue to pursue this passion. ✨❤️

Character creation
Creating your character

Before we dive into the story, we’ll kick things off with a Session Zero, where we’ll create characters, go over expectations, and introduce the world of Krynn. This will happen before the first full session, giving everyone a chance to build their character with the setting and story in mind. During Session Zero, we’ll discuss your character’s background, motivations, and connections—both to each other and to the world. This is a collaborative, story-first game, so we’ll work together to make sure everyone has a place in the narrative, whether you're a seasoned knight, a village herbalist, or a mage just discovering their power. Character Creation Guidelines: Starting Level: Level 1 Ability Scores: Choose Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or Point Buy (27 points) Platform: We’ll use D&D Beyond to build and manage characters. A campaign link will be shared so everyone can access shared resources. Allowed Races: Dwarves (Hill & Mountain) Elves (Silvanesti High Elves, Qualinesti High Elves, Kagonesti Wood Elves, Sea Elves) Gnomes Humans (Variant allowed) Kender If you want to play a race not listed above, please speak with the DM—we can figure out how your character might have ended up on Ansalon. Decide on a Class! All standard classes are allowed. However, if you choose to play a Cleric, Paladin, Warlock, or plan to worship a god or goddess, please talk with the DM before the game begins. In this setting, the gods have long been absent from the world, and divine magic is incredibly rare—often seen as miraculous or misunderstood. If you're playing a divine spellcaster, your character will be especially unique in the world of Krynn, and we’ll work together to make your story fit the setting's lore and mystery. Whether you’re brand new to D&D or a seasoned veteran, you’ll be stepping into a world of war, wonder, and rising darkness. Session Zero is the perfect time to get comfortable, ask questions, and shape a character you’re excited to play.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

This campaign will be played online, so a few tools and setups are required to make sure everything runs smoothly and enjoyably for everyone. Don’t worry—we’ll keep things beginner-friendly, and I’m happy to help with setup if you need it! Technology Requirements: Microphone: Required. Clear audio is essential for roleplaying and teamwork. You don’t need anything fancy—headphones with a built-in mic are fine! Webcam: Optional but encouraged. Seeing each other helps with engagement and makes the game feel more personal, but you’re welcome to keep your camera off if you’re more comfortable that way. Stable Internet Connection: Try to play from a quiet, stable environment so we minimize connection issues and background noise. Accounts & Tools: D&D Beyond: You’ll need a free account. We’ll use D&D Beyond to create and manage characters, and I’ll provide a campaign link so you’ll have access to shared books and content. Dice Rolling: You can roll using D&D Beyond’s digital dice, or roll physical dice at home—your choice! Virtual Tabletop (VTT): We may use a platform like Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, or similar for maps and tokens. You won’t need a paid account for these; more info will be provided before Session 1. Voice Chat Platform: We’ll use Discord (free account required) for voice communication and general coordination. I’ll send an invite to the campaign server with channels for game discussion, character ideas, and session scheduling. Rules & Preparation: No Rules Reading Required! If you’re new to D&D, that’s totally okay—you don’t need to read the rulebooks before we start. I’ll guide you through the basics, and Session Zero will cover everything you need to know. For Experienced Players: You’re welcome to brush up on Dragonlance lore or relevant mechanics, but it’s not required. Character Creation: We’ll build characters during Session Zero, but you’re encouraged to start brainstorming ahead of time. If you already have a class or backstory in mind, awesome! If not, we’ll figure it out together. Ultimately, all you need is a mic, a D&D Beyond account, Discord, and a willingness to explore a world on the brink of war. The rest will fall into place as we go!

What WforWhimsy brings to the table

Every Dungeon Master brings their own energy and style to the table, so here’s what you can expect from me and this campaign: I focus on story-first gameplay—that means your character’s choices, backstories, and motivations will shape the direction of the campaign. I love weaving player decisions into the world and adapting the narrative based on what you do. Your characters are the heart of the story, and I’ll make sure you each have moments to shine. You can expect a blend of cinematic storytelling, immersive roleplay, and tactical combat. I use character voices to bring NPCs to life and often include ambient music and soundscapes to enhance the atmosphere. Whether we're in a tense negotiation or a battle under a blood-red sky, I aim to make scenes feel vivid and memorable. Combat encounters will range from small skirmishes to large, dramatic battles. Some will be simple and fast-paced, while others will be more tactical, especially in key moments. Positioning, teamwork, and creative problem-solving will be rewarded. That said, I don’t run games like a wargame—if you want to leap off a crumbling tower and stab a dragon in the eye while shouting your backstory? Let’s talk it out. When it comes to rules, I try to strike a healthy balance. I lean into the Rule of Cool when it enhances the story or a moment of heroism, but I respect the structure of the Rules as Written to keep things fair and consistent. I’ll always be transparent about rulings, and I welcome rules questions and clarifications, especially between sessions. This is a collaborative game, and player comfort and fun are always top priorities. We’ll talk through safety tools and boundaries in Session Zero so everyone feels confident and included. Open communication is key—if something isn’t working for you, I want to hear about it. You’ll also have access to a shared D&D Beyond campaign link, which unlocks setting-appropriate materials for character creation, including backgrounds, races, and feats specific to Shadow of the Dragon Queen. I’ll provide everything you need to make the process smooth and fun, especially if you’re new to the platform or the setting. We’ll use a dedicated Discord server to stay connected between sessions. It’s a warm, welcoming space where we’ll share campaign updates, session times, memes, character art, questions, and lore tidbits. It’s also the best place to get support, chat about the game, and build camaraderie with your fellow players. During Session Zero, I’ll share any lore documents, reference materials, and setting-specific guides you'll need to get immersed in the world of Krynn. You don’t need to read or memorize anything ahead of time—we’ll walk through it together so you feel confident and excited going into your first adventure. In short: expect a game that’s emotionally engaging, story-rich, and character-driven, with moments of big drama, quiet introspection, chaotic fun, and epic heroism. Whether you're here for the lore, the laugh

Homebrew rules

1. Secret Death Saves All death saving throws will be made in secret between the player and the DM. This creates tension as the rest of the party won’t know exactly how many failed saves a downed ally has, increasing the urgency to act and protect. 2. Healing Potions as a Bonus Action Using a healing potion no longer costs a full action. Drinking a potion is now a bonus action, allowing you to heal and still attack or move during your turn. If you use a potion as a bonus action, roll healing normally. If you use a potion as a full action, your healing is maximized (for example, a Potion of Healing recovers 10 HP instead of rolling 2d4+2). 3. Bloodied Condition for Monsters When a monster’s hit points drop to half or below, it gains the Bloodied condition. This signals to players that their attacks are making real progress and the creature is wounded. 4. Critical Hits When you score a critical hit, you automatically deal maximum damage for the attack dice, then add your normal modifiers. Example: A 1st-level Guiding Bolt (4d6) would deal 24 radiant damage on a crit (max 4d6 = 24). 5. Talking During Combat You may speak as part of your action, but keep it brief! Talking is limited to 6 seconds (one round). If your turn extends beyond that, you’ll be cut off to keep combat flowing. 6. Mass Combat & Battlefield Battles Since this campaign takes place during a large-scale war, several fights will be Battlefield Battles. These focus on your immediate action, while the larger battle plays out “theatre of the mind.” At the edges of the battlefield lies the Fray—a dangerous zone full of chaotic combat hazards. At the end of each round during these encounters, we’ll roll for Battlefield Events that add variety and unpredictability, such as: Helpful effects (an ally smites an enemy, reinforcements arrive) Hindrances (a charging warhorse causes disruption, you trip over battlefield debris) These events keep battles dynamic and reflect the chaos of war.

How WforWhimsy creates a safe table

Creating a safe and welcoming space for everyone at the table is a top priority for me. Before we even start adventuring, we’ll dedicate time during Session Zero to discuss boundaries, expectations, and comfort levels. This is the time to voice any concerns, questions, or topics you’d like to avoid or explore carefully. I will send out a Lines and Veils document beforehand—this is a tool that helps us define clear boundaries: Lines are hard limits, topics or content that will not appear in the game. Veils are things that may happen but are kept off-screen or handled delicately. We’ll review and adjust this together so everyone feels safe and respected. During sessions, we’ll use a simple system of X, N, and O signals for quick safety checks: X means “I need a break” or “this scene is uncomfortable” N means “I’m okay, but I’d like to check in” O means “I’m good, no issues” These signals can be sent via private message or chat if playing online, or you can hold up a card or gesture discreetly if in person or on video. This way, you can communicate your needs without interrupting the flow of the game. Aftercare is just as important as safety tools during play. After each session, I encourage open conversations about how everyone is feeling. Whether you want to debrief a difficult scene, chat about character arcs, or just share some laughs, I’m here to support you. If you ever feel overwhelmed, please reach out privately anytime. Our game is a collaborative story where every player’s comfort, fun, and mental well-being matter. Together, we’ll build a respectful, inclusive table where imagination can flourish without fear.
