About the adventure

First Session Free! “Imagine – this city used to be a nice place to live! When? How old do I look? I wasn't around for that.” - Volothamp Geddarm, chronicler **🕵️‍♂️ What to Expect** 🔑 Mystery 💀 Dark Secrets 💰 High Stakes 💫 Twists, Turns, and More Twists 👀 Realistic, Fleshed-Out NPCs ☺️ Friendly, Inclusive DM Whether you're a native of Waterdeep or a newcomer chasing a fresh start, one thing becomes clear fast: the City of Splendors has shadows as deep as the sea. You can buy anything here - for the right price or with the right connections. And if it’s not for sale? Maybe, it might just disappear. That’s where you come in. You’re not a thief… probably. You’re an investigator - maybe a private eye, maybe a reluctant hero, trying to keep the criminal underworld from tearing the city apart. Business is booming. Bad for the city, but good for you. You’ll take on increasingly dangerous cases, uncovering secrets others would kill to protect. And just when you think you’ve got a handle on Waterdeep, the entire city of Elturel vanishes. Buildings. People. Gone. If you thought Waterdeep’s secrets were dark… well, you’re in for a hell of a ride. This campaign combines Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (levels 2–5) with Descent into Avernus (levels 6–13) for a fresh, narrative-driven take on both. Expect a noir-flavored descent from city intrigue to hellish adventure.

About me

I run D&D full-time, and my favorite moments are never the ones I plan. They’re the ones that spiral beautifully out of control. Like the time a Dragonchess tournament was invented on the spot to fund the party’s tavern, or when a newly resurrected dragon got a crash course in “Who’s on First” because someone decided the ruined city needed a little joy. That’s the kind of table I run: reactive, story-rich, and full of choices that somehow lead to laughter and emotional damage in the same session. I care a lot about pacing, but not in a “keep things moving” way, in a “know when something wants to land” way. A player once told me I had the best pacing of any GM they’d had. I think it’s because I pay attention. To the room, to the rhythm, and to the quiet character moments that would be easy to miss if you’re rushing to the next initiative roll. I tend to attract players who care more about story than stats. But if you show up with both, I won’t stop you. Just don’t try to optimize the NPCs. Some of them are just like that.

Character creation

Creating your character

2014 rules or 2024 rules? 2024, but legacy options are allowed for subclasses. You can also use 2014 classes that don't have a 2024 update yet. What level will the characters be? Level 2 - higher if you start mid-campaign. Where will they be created? D&D Beyond. You will be sent a link for the campaign table after joining. Stat generation method? Standard point buy. Starting equipment? Either gold OR standard starting equipment, one potion of healing, and one common magic item. Multiclassing? Usually fine, but requires DM approval. No more than 2 classes. Dips into Warlock are only allowed when it makes sense for your character. (You will have a patron, they will want things from you.) What's allowed? Most official races and classes. D&D Beyond partnered content may be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Bans? No builds that rely on a lot of adds (typical Necromancer) and no evil player characters. Greedy/selfish PCs may be fine so long as they are inclined to generally cooperate with the party. Special requirements? For this campaign, your character will need a dark secret. This secret can be known or unknown to your PC, but you will need to tell me before your first session. What if I don't like my character? You may tweak or re-roll your character between your first and second session. You don't need my permission for this, but I do appreciate a heads up. Character changes after that need to be discussed with me first.

The current party

The party includes a Ranger, a Sorcerer, a Druid, a Paladin, and a Fighter. It's a fun group with good synergy. We're still fairly early in the campaign with the party in the middle of their second major investigation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

This game will require a microphone, a computer, a Forge account (free), and a Discord account (free). A D&D Beyond account for character creation is highly recommended. Please have a character made before session 0 with an idea of a basic backstory. (Why did your character come to Waterdeep? Why did they decide to become an investigator?)

What Dazzle brings to the table

When you sign up for one of my games, you can expect a well-paced adventure with opportunities for every party member to shine. Bring your best ideas, and I'll help bring them to life! I have fun when my players are having a good time, and I will tweak my style based off feedback. I employ Rule of Cool (sparingly) when it makes for an epic moment. I enjoy doing character voices and fleshing out NPCs in a realistic, memorable way. My VTT is stocked with high-quality assets. Some of my sources include: - Maps: Cze and Peku, Venatus, Tych Maps, The Red Dragon, Tessa Morecroft, and Pogs Props - Tokens: Caeora and Venatus - Music: Michael Ghelfi Studios I have content sharing enabled on my D&D Beyond table to allow you to choose more options from sources such as the full PHB (2024), Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and Xanathar's Guide to Everything. If you ever want an option that's not listed, just let me know!

Homebrew rules

The complete list of homebrew rules is available on my Discord server. Highlights: In some situations, I will call for a D20 LUCK roll. Does the potion shop have a potion of invisibility? Time to leave it up to blink luck. Falling happens at a flat rate of 100 feet/second and kicks in 10 counts in initiative from the trigger. Silvery Barbs is limited to twice per encounter. This is across the entire party.

Safety

How Dazzle creates a safe table

I want every player to feel comfortable and have a good experience, and I take this seriously. We will start by having a SESSION 0 to talk about party expectations and finalize character creation. Players who join late will need to meet with me before their first game to do the same. I will discuss players Lines and Veils with you before the first session and send you a list to fill out. Lines and Veils will be pinned on Discord for easy access. Lines for all tables include Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Real-World Politics, Real-World Religion, and Sexual Crimes. During sessions we will have a 10 minute bio break, and you can DM me on Discord at any time if you have concerns. After the first game and after every couple of sessions, we will do stars and wishes so I can determine what the party is and isn't enjoying.
