About the adventure

Welcome to the Arcturus Relic Hunter Society! Join your fellow adventurers, colleagues from Miskatonic University, and occult investigators on expeditions around the globe, exploring exotic locations in search of ancient ruins and powerful artifacts!! Fortune, fame, and knowledge beyond your wildest imagination await! Your assignments will vary from session to session, so be prepared and stay on your toes. You may find yourself in the dark jungles of the Amazon, the bright streets of Shanghai, or even on an expedition to the Arctic Circle! But beware, as there are many dark forces in the world who are trying to find the same artifacts you seek for their own nefarious desires! Work together as a team to keep each others' lives and sanities intact! This is an episodic story set in the Call of Cthulhu universe, following the Pulp Cthulhu rules. This means each adventure will have a fast-paced and swashbuckling kind of vibe. Each session will take place in a new location, with a new relic to track down. Embrace your 1920s Pulp Hero fantasy and join us for some globe-trotting antics!

About me

There are an infinite number of stories to be told, so let's tell some of them together! TTRPGs are such a wonderful way of building a tight community and having a wildly imaginative time doing it. Whatever universe you'd like to play in, I can make that happen! I have experience in a wide variety of game systems, and come prepared to set up an even wider variety of homebrew settings as well.

Paul is an intuitive, inclusive, and creative storyteller and Game Master who works with people of all different backgrounds, gender identities, personalities, ages, and skill levels. I had never played an RPG before, and Paul is always patient and kind. He instantly made me feel a part of the amazing world filled with diverse characters he created.

Paul's creativity amazes me. Being in his campaign has been a fun and expanding experience for me as we have entered the world he has created. We have worked through puzzles, we have laughed together, we have had moments of deep meaning. Our adventuring group came together with varying levels of experience, and Paul has been a patient coach for the newbies. He has created a welcoming and safe environment for us to play with our own creativity.

Character creation
Creating your character

I'll have plenty of pre-build characters that you can look over and choose from as templates, or we can build your character completely from scratch! Either way, we'll develop and finalize your characters during our Session Zero. The pre-built characters have their stats and abilities already chosen, allowing you to develop their personality and backstory as you see fit. A character built totally from the ground up will have their statistics chosen by dice roll, and a massive pool of skill points to distribute how you like. However you choose, you'll have plenty of opportunities to make an Investigator that is truly unique to you!

What to expect
Preparing for the session

Players will need a mic in order to communicate with all of us on Discord. If you have a webcam so can all see each other's smiling faces that's great, but not necessary! If you would like to get a grasp of some of the basic mechanics and how character creation works, I recommend players visit dholeshouse.org. Their services are free, and they offer a variety of insights into the game and how it works. It is not necessary to know the rules ahead of time, though, as I'll introduce rules as they come up during play. All experience levels are welcome!

What Paul Willis brings to the table

I offer a full variety of custom-made maps, as well as actual historical maps of the cities and locations you'll be visiting. I'll provide photos and other visual aids to add to immersion. These things will be viewable through Discord or through the Fantasy Grounds VTT that I'll be screen-sharing. I'll do my best with certain accents when speaking, but I also want to be sensitive to the cultures and places we'll be visiting, so I may resort to my normal speaking voice at times to avoid being stereotypical or insensitive. These adventures are designed to be swashbuckling and fast-paced, in the nature of old serials or movies like The Mummy or Indiana Jones. Puzzles and clues will be designed with that in mind, just as easily solved with a fight and a car chase as with a few hours perusing the volumes in a library. How your group approaches things is up to you! This will be a "High Pulp" series, so characters will have a total of 3 Pulp Talents, allowing for a good mix of exciting scenarios!

Safety
How Paul Willis creates a safe table

During our sessions, we'll take a 5-10 minute break so people can walk around, get a snack, or whatever. Also, after the session, we'll take a few minutes to talk over the game and discuss the highs and lows. Once our group is formed, I'll provide my players with a link to a Consent Checklist and ask that they notify me of anything triggering or sensitive for them. We'll discuss the list at the beginning of our Session Zero so that all players can be on the same page in regards to boundaries. During the session, I'll keep a private chat open so that players can quietly give me an X, N, or O if something comes up. Between sessions, I'll check in with players to share story ideas or character concepts, and keep the door open for players to approach me with any issues they might be having.
