About the adventure

Fists of the Ruby Phoenix is a whirlwind adventure set in the dazzling, high-stakes world of Golarion’s most famous martial arts tournament. Once a decade, champions from every corner of the world flock to the bustling city of Goka to compete for glory, riches, and the ultimate prize: one magical wish. Adventurers must face deadly rivals, unravel ancient mysteries, and survive treacherous challenges on their way to the top—where only the boldest can claim victory beneath the Ruby Phoenix’s gaze. This campaign is a celebration of over-the-top martial arts action, wild magic, and fast-paced competition. The setting is vibrant and cosmopolitan, a melting pot of cultures and fighting styles from across Tian Xia and beyond. Expect tournament arenas filled with roaring crowds, colorful NPCs, and exotic locales—from shadowy streets and forbidden temples to flying islands and mystical battlefields. The story mixes pulse-pounding battles with investigation, intrigue, and moments of character-driven drama. This game is perfect for players who love dynamic combat, cinematic teamwork, and bold heroics. You’ll have chances to shine both in and out of the arena—whether you’re mastering new techniques, outwitting rivals, or exploring ancient legends for a competitive edge. Character personalities, relationships, and creative problem-solving are all part of the fun. Whether you’re a newcomer or a veteran, if you want a campaign that feels like a blend of kung fu movies, tournament anime, and classic adventure, you’ll feel right at home. I run games with an old-school mindset and a focus on fair play and fun. This adventure rewards both tactical skill and roleplaying flair, welcoming all! Bring your wildest concepts and your fighting spirit—the Ruby Phoenix Tournament is about to begin!

About me

Welcome, adventurer! Thanks for stopping by my table. Let me share a bit about who I am as a DM, so you can decide if my games are the right fit for you. I got my start in the late '80s, running AD&D for friends and playing classic Gold Box games on the Commodore 64. Back then, we improvised a lot—sometimes using calculators instead of dice! Even when life pulled me away for a while (hello, college), I stayed connected through D&D video games like Dark Sun, Baldur’s Gate, and Eye of the Beholder. When I came back to tabletop, I dove headfirst into Pathfinder 1e, running 2–3 games a week in local stores and at home. I eventually became my state’s Pathfinder Society coordinator, organizing weekly games and large-scale events. From there, I ran several long-running home campaigns and later switched to D&D 5e for a few years. These days, my players and I have returned to deeper waters—Pathfinder 2e. By day, I’m an accountant (rules and numbers come naturally). By passion, I’m a writer and artist (so creativity is always on the menu). My GM style is fast-paced, story-first, and team-oriented. I value clear rules as a foundation, but character arcs and party dynamics are what truly bring a game to life. I’ll check in often to make sure you’re having fun—and I welcome feedback. Expect a challenge. I run tough but fair games where teamwork matters and victory is earned. Some options are restricted to keep things balanced and ensure everyone has a chance to shine. Want more specifics? Check out the individual game pages. Thanks for reading—I hope we’ll roll initiative together soon!

Character creation

Creating your character

New players will start with a short chat with the GM to make sure the game’s a good fit and to go over character options. You'll create a level-appropriate character based on that conversation, and we'll set everything up in Foundry VTT. If you have any questions before signing up or scheduling your intro chat, feel free to message me through StartPlaying.

The current party

Party is level 14! We move quickly here! They currently have Fighter, Swashbuckler, Gunslinger, Monk, Sorcerer and NPC Cleric.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will connect using Foundry VTT, and can check the demo available on their website to ensure compatibility. All dice rolling and character sheets will be provided via the software. For voice chat, we will use Discord. Please ensure you have a quality microphone, and will be in an environment free of background noise for the enjoyment of all. It is recommended that all players read over my gameplay guidelines at https://tinyurl.com/5x7nu93m , The guide for the campaign may be found at https://tinyurl.com/yc3f6y29 .

What Phil brings to the table

I will provide the Foundry VTT software with all the needed setup. Once the game is ready to go, I will provide a URL and password that players will use to connect.

Homebrew rules

This game uses a refined PF2e system with custom house rules designed for balance, fast-paced combat, and rich storytelling. Expect gently rebalanced classes (like Champions and Clerics), custom feats and spell options, faster healing mechanics, and meaningful consequences for death and resurrection. We use milestone leveling and emphasize teamwork, tactics, and character-driven roleplay. Combat is streamlined: one-minute planning, turn timers, and no take-backs once dice are rolled. Spellcasters get exciting upgrades like 3-action spell options and greater spell variety, particularly at higher levels. Safety

How Phil creates a safe table

I run games with an old-school spirit—grounded in common sense, fair play, and a strong focus on fun. My table is open to everyone, as long as there's room, and I maintain an open-door policy: if you ever have a question, concern, or idea, I’m usually around and happy to chat, often via voice. Pathfinder is a collaborative storytelling game with rich tactical depth, and I aim to make sure both the narrative and the gameplay feel rewarding every session.
