About the adventure

The town is in chaos! Why? And how are rats the cause of it all? In this 1-shot adventure... ⚔️Play as a hero for hire sent to do a simple quest which, eventually, evolves into something much greater! ⚔️Explore the basement of an old wizard's tower (turned brewery) and fight against the critters beneath the floorboards! ⚔️Slay some rats, find the tower's secret, become a hero of the town! 🎭Plot🎭 Luckily, our heroes are promised a handsome some to investigate the source of the issue and put a stop to it! This leads our players to deal with a problem that should be instantly familiar to all rookie adventurers - exterminating giant rats that have taken up residence in a beer cellar. However, if the heroes are to achieve this goal, they may find themselves stumbling upon secrets buried way deeper down.. 🤠Vibes🤠 The core idea behind this story is low stakes. Thus, the adventure has a cozy low stake feel! If you enjoy forming a team, solving puzzles, and getting to try out what D&D combat is like, here's your perfect opportunity! 🐀Module Summary & Info⚔️ The core ideas and main content included in this 1-shot are from "A Most Potent Brew" by Richard Jansen-Parkes in collaboration with Winghorn Press, which was released by them on the Dungeon Masters Guild. However, I have modified the story and added a lot to make it more fun for me, as the DM, to run! I have added all-new content and included options for players to request an entomophobia-free and/or arachnophobia-free game!

About me

About me? Aww, you shouldn't have! Hi, I'm Jake. My primary system is D&D 5e, since I have been playing it since middle school. I love watching actual play shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20, so much of my inspiration comes from things like that. Once upon a time, I was brought to a magical land of adventure and fun through a video game I knew as Skylanders. While considered vastly imperfect by today's standards, I learned that a character represented by a small figure could have personality and life beyond that. That, if placed onto the right pedestal, a special light brings them to life and sucks me into their world right along with them. While I am not a game publisher, character artist, or million-dollar company, I am a writer, creative thinker, and dedicated guy. I want to share the joy from the experience I get every time I am brought to a new world. Whether it be the Skylands or Holeworld, my goal is to bring creative storytelling to life. As far as actual DM and player experience goes, I have taken part in many campaigns at many different tables over the years. I have also put a lot of work into handcrafting many of my own stories and campaign settings, my largest being a fantasy world which multiple campaigns have been run inside. If there's one thing I have learned about D&D though, it is that the players' story is always going to be more interesting than the one the DM comes up with ahead of time. I love trying to plan and play out YOUR stories based on character motivations and backstories, so if that sounds like you, I'd love to have you at my table!

Character creation

Creating your character

🛟Session 0🛟 Character creation is preferred to happen before the start of session, but the Session 0 segment includes time for players to make adjustments as well! Players are encouraged to leave room in their stories and concepts for other players to have a connection with them and so they may show their flaws. 🧝Help🧝 I also have resources available to help with character creation upon request, or I can get in a call before the game and help to guide you through it or answer any questions that may arise. If you choose to create your own character rather than choose a premade option: 🛡️ LEVEL 1: Create a level 1 character with a fun/interesting concept! 🤓 STATS: Use Standard Array when determining stats. 🔮 SOURCES: Use 2024 rules, "The Illrigger Revised", or "Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass" when creating your character. Blood Hunters are fine too! <3

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To play in my games, it's as simple as... 1️⃣ Joining my Discord server to find all the handouts you'll need! 2️⃣ Filling out the Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist! 3️⃣ Using DnDBeyond to create or choose your character! Everything else is covered during session 0, and there's no need to prep that! Just make sure you can show up during the session! 🎙️Voice/Video Chat🎙️ In the "Oh, Rats!" voice channel, you'll need to bring your microphone. (Webcams are strongly encouraged, but not required.) 🎲Dice Rolling🎲 Digital or Physical dice are both acceptable. Personally, I like the sound the math rocks make on real tables. My rule with all dice is simply, "don't cheat." It's really that simple. It's just not fun for anybody if you do, and it'll ruin your immersion. 🗺️VTT🗺️ I try to use Roll20 from time to time for maps, so it may be worth making a free account. Check the Discord to see if you'll want to join up before the game! If you don't want to bother with it, I can also share my screen via Discord so you can see whatever is going on!

What JakeAstounding brings to the table

My table is a safe space for all, so, please, bring your silliest voices and most outlandish actions to this game! If you want to play as a silly, little guy, you can be a little silly in the process! 😋 Players have the option to find or provide art for their characters to use on their character sheet and that I will use for their token on Roll20! I allow players to use premade characters or to create their own on dndbeyond! I have all of the new 2024 core rulebooks, as well as a few third-party character options for players to pick from! During the Session 0 at the beginning of the game, players will get to work in collaboration to talk about how their characters came to know and work with one another!

How JakeAstounding creates a safe table

I will send a Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist where players may choose any common triggers to avoid content in-game or submit their own. I will verify the information at the start of the session & I will do my best to steer the party away from those topics in game! As part of the aforementioned checklist and through a confirmation poll in the discord, players will be asked specifically about arachnophobia and entomophobia. Only if all players are comfortable with this content will I include it in the game. At the start of the session, the first 30-45 minutes of the game is dedicated to a Session 0. After the session, I will send you another form for all of the Roses, Thorns, and Buds you experienced in the game, where you can write about what you liked, what you didn't, and what you wished you could see more of.
