About the adventure

The Monster of the Week RPG is a very accessible Powered by the Apocalypse tabletop roleplaying game modeled on shows like Supernatural, Grimm, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. MotW is fun, easy to learn, and emphasizes narrative description and storytelling over tactical positioning on a battle map. As heard on THE ADVENTURE ZONE, the CRIT SHOW, and my own THE GOTHIC PODCAST, among others. Come along and fight some supernatural critters!

About me

Hi! In addition to being a professional game master (both here on Start Playing Games and live-and-in-person), I'm a published short story horror author, and host of the horror-and-humor actual-play audio drama, The Gothic Podcast. I started gaming in the Way Back, beginning with the D&D Basic box set that I asked for for Christmas because I liked the dragon on the cover. And though I still love playing and running D&D (and its cousins, Pathfinder 1e & 2e), I have gleefully embraced many other systems, especially Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) games such as Monster of the Week. I also loves me some Ten Candles, City of Mist, Alien RPG, and many others. Oh, and Catthulhu! Meow...aaaarrrrrhhhhhhll! To keep up with what I'm offering and other gaming commentary check out my blog at https://www.c-patrick.com

Character creation

Creating your character

Monster of the Week is a role-playing game based on the Powered By the Apocalypse game engine. It is rules-light with easy character creation based on 'playbooks' -- character archetypes. We’ll be using the very user friendly character sheets on Roll20 for our game, so make sure to log in there (SEE Prep Materials) to get started.

The current party

So far, we have a Spooky, an Expert, a Flake, and an Exiled. Every other Thursday, these "Librarians" hunt down monsters in and around Los Angeles, California. With dangers everywhere, any mystery could be the hunters' last!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need at least a computer and a reasonably good mic for connecting to the internet. Although I'm happy to see your smiling, gaming faces, video is certainly not required. Please try to find a relatively quiet place for gaming purposes, or be prepared to use Push to Talk.

What GM Mr Patrick brings to the table

I bring the descriptions--loads and loads of descriptions (though you'll have a chance at doing some of that, too)--an affinity for improv, and an enthusiasm for (if not skill at) character voices. There'll be some atmospheric illustrations and music, too. I also bring a long history of running Monster of the Week games (we even have an actual play 'audio drama with dice' podcast--The Gothic Podcast--that uses the MotW rules).

Homebrew rules

We use the Alternate Weird Moves options for characters unless you’re playing an actual spell caster. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry! We’ll get it figured out before game time!

Safety

How GM Mr Patrick creates a safe table

I try to keep my games to PG-13 to R-rated levels of horror, gore, and violence, but we will also implement the usage of Lines/Veils/and the X-Card during game sessions. These safety tools will be discussed at game start. Your GM rejects transphobia, racism, sexism, bigotry, xenophobia, ageism, and gatekeeping. These attitudes will not be accepted at my table among our players, where we should all be working toward building a safe and enjoyable gaming experience for one another, and your GM actively invites and encourages players of all races and orientations to this table. Quite definitely LGBTQ+ friendly. And now that you know all that, let's play some Monster of the Week!
