Genius Loci | Call of Cthulhu One-Shot
Call of Cthulhu | One-Shot
About the adventure
Have you every wanted to delve into the mysteries of the occult? Ever wondered if here was anything that actually went bump in the night? You've wondered what dark things lurk beneath the soil, what horrid secrets are kept in shadowed libraries, or if your neighbor is actually your neighbor. Some secrets are better left uncovered, but you never were very good at leaving stones unturned. This series of one-shots is dedicated to new players or players looking for a pickup game! I'm happy to go over rules and help new players learn a fantastic system that offers a variety of roleplaying options. Ranging in time period from the 1800s up to modern day, every session will have something new!
Game style
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.
Lawrence "Larry" Croswell has been a dear friend for years. The eccentric author has always had a flair for the dramatic, but this time, it'd gone to far. You received a hastily written letter from him. In it he seemed scattered and frightened, but shortly after you received another letter, this one typed and more clinical. Something is wrong and no o e else believes you. Time to investigate the Danvers State Mental Asylum.

How to prepare
Players will need a Roll20 and Discord accounts and have a basic understanding of how to play Call of Cthulhu (ie, rolling dice, basic arithmetic, etc). Players will only need a microphone, and we'll be using Discord for voice chat.
What I provide
Roll20 assets. I love using fun voices for characters. Not all of my voices are great, but I have a couple here and there that are really good. I also love helping people learn to play RPGs. Not just 5e, but Cypher, Alien RPG, and more.
Gameplay details
Lines and Veils are listed in a handout on Roll20 for you to add to if needed. It takes about 30 minutes to break down the basic rules, but I'm a firm believer in learn through experience. I plan on you learning the rules as you play! General Rules 1) Respect and listen to your fellow players. 2) Respect and listen to the GM. 3) Please do not distract other players. 4) Making the GM laugh so hard they can’t breathe while you’re in character gives you a bonus die. 5) Take notes. 6) Please save meta-gaming, rule debates, memes, etc. until designated break times. 7) Random Events can occur at the GMs discretion. 8) Remember actions have consequences. 9) Keep noise at a reasonable level. Respect our neighbors and all of our ears. 10) No explicit actions will be detailed in-game. This includes sex, torture, etc. In accordance with StartPlaying.games rules and rightly so, no non-consensual sexual actions and no pedophilia will be allowed in this game. 11) No politics. 12) The Rule of Cool applies to the GM as well as players. I have an Open Door policy. You can step away for any reason, and the only thing we'll ask is if you're ok.
