Call of Cthulhu : The Lightless Beacon [a one shot introduction to Call of Cthulhu]
Call of Cthulhu | One-Shot
About the adventure
The Lightless beacon - a short one-shot adventure for new investigators, wishing to discover the terrifying world of the Call of Cthulhu mythos. “April 12th, 1926, 8:15pm. The Beacon Island lighthouse off the shore of Folly Point, Massachusetts, ceased to cast its light over the region’s dangerous rocky waters about 15 minutes ago. As a result, the SS Essex County, a mixed passenger and cargo vessel on which you are all traveling to Rockport, has foundered on the rocks and incurred considerable damage to its hull. The ship is sinking, and the crew hurries you toward one of the many small rowboats acting as the ship’s lifeboats. As they load you in, they tell you your best bet is to aim for Beacon Island—they doubt you’ll make the mainland as a storm is brewing. You should have just enough time to reach the island before it hits. Then, without another word, they shove you off into the dark, churning waters. All you have to guide you is the small light shining at the base of the lighthouse’s towering silhouette.” Pregenerated characters are provided, so we can be up and running right away. Please note, that if you are unaware, this is a horror genre game, inspired by and based upon the myths created by H.P. Lovecraft. It can get pretty dark. But scary is fun, right? Right? I also run short and long term Call of Cthulhu campaigns, so I you play and enjoy this game, I may be able to introduce you to more dark horrors from the beyond.
Game style
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare
I intend to run the game on Roll20, talking via discord. So you won’t need physical dice. I recommend all players have some method of note taking available.
What I provide
I can provide pdfs of all player handouts during play. I will use floor plans and maps where needed [via roll20] I can provide access to the Investigators [players] handbook [via pdf] if needed.
Gameplay details
This is a horror game, and as such deals with dark, unpleasant, and [sometimes] visceral content. Please feel free to discuss what you as a player will and will not be comfortable with prior to play [or after a session]. I will be using lines and veils in this aspect of the game. By default Call of Cthulhu is set in the 1920’s; and during this historical period, many people were subjected to prejudice, for either ethnic or lifestyle reasons. While I do acknowledge that these problems existed [and continue to do so], I have no intention of highlighting them in the context of this game. So expect a ‘fantasy version’ of 1920’s Earth. There are enough horrors in the world of Call of Cthulhu from the beyond, without adding earthly man made ones. We are here to have fun, and get a little ‘creeped out’ in the process.

How will character creation work
There is a choice of pre-generated characters available [tailored for this one-shot] Whilst I would normally help players with character generation, so they can create their own unique character, for the purposes of this one shot, using pregenerated characters is more appropriate.
