Ghost Hunt TV: Abandoned Alaska Orphanage| One-Shot
About the adventure
Monster of the Week: Ghost Hunt TV takes your team of reality show Monster Hunters on quests to find and deal with supernatural events in the most chilling places your producers can find. Using Monster of the Week rules, you'll have more resources, and possibly powers, at your disposal than the average ghost-hunting reality show cast. But you'll also face real monsters, all while trying to make your TV show look like a TV show rather than showing your viewers the true darkness that lies behind the veil. Every game is different, so come for more than one!

Meet the Game Master
About me
Hi! In addition to being a professional game master (both here on Start Playing Games and live-and-in-person), I'm a published short story horror author, and host of the horror-and-humor actual-play audio drama, The Gothic Podcast. I started gaming in the Way Back, beginning with the D&D Basic box set that I asked for for Christmas because I liked the dragon on the cover. And though I still love playing and running D&D (and its cousins, Pathfinder 1e & 2e), I have gleefully embraced many other systems, especially Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) games such as Monster of the Week. I also loves me some Ten Candles, City of Mist, Alien RPG, and many others. Oh, and Catthulhu! Meow...aaaarrrrrhhhhhhll! Patrick is an outstanding GM. His storylines are always interesting and he incorporates great imagery in his descriptions. The online resources are top notch, including great art and effects for the battle map. His worldbuilding is deep rich, and he collaborates with players in-game to make sure that the rules are observed in spirit, but that they do not get in the way of the game. He also adjusts well when the party does something unexpected! He builds in great RP opportunities and is ready to help describe the epic moments if words fail a player.
This was my fourth time to join a game on SPG. This time in Dead of Night: Into the Woods, where our group role played character tropes from a horror B-movie. GM C. Patrick's narrative swung the party between high tension and spells of laughter. This game follows my previous visit to SPG, when I learned about the Pathfinder2e game by playing a one-shot, also with GM Patrick. I appreciated that he prepared for that experience by putting some beautiful images in the queue, and each accompanied by thematic music. The session was entertaining and instructive, and a great intro to pathfinder. Our small band of three explorers confidently and humorously almost met our doom. But alas we did prevail by having the right blend of thug, medic, and punk. Thank you GM C. Patrick; I'm looking forward to another.
C. Patrick is such a great GM. His story telling ability sets the stage for glorious adventuring. Whether you are new or advanced he has the ability to make an amazing blend to support all characters. He shows great patience but keeps the storyline moving. Its always a grand fun adventure with his lead and his many character voices and quick wit keep me laughing and frightened all at the same time!
Character creation
Creating your character
Monster of the Week is a role-playing game based on the Powered By the Apocalypse game engine. It is rules-light with easy character creation based on 'playbooks' -- character archetypes. I'll have you pick out a playbook beforehand (one 'type' per player, so we won't have two Monstrous, or three Wronged) and then we'll work our way through character creation during the first part of the session. It is, in fact, one of the mostest funnest parts of the game, methinks.
The Ghost Hunt TV team is flying to Seward, Alaska for this episode. There, at an abandoned orphanage slated for demolition, they plan to investigate stories of ghostly figures seen in the broken windows and the sounds of children laughing in the dark, detritus-strewn hallways. What they'll find will turn out to be far more dangerous. Break out the cameras and the EVP gear, it's time for Ghost Hunt TV! Monster of the Week: Ghost Hunt TV is a dark-themed game using the easy-to-learn Monster of the Week RPG rules with the premise that your Hunters are members of a reality TV ghost hunting show, but one where YOU know that the ghosts are real. No experience necessary to play!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll need a computer/phone/tablet/something and a decent mic for connecting to our Discord voice channel. And you'll need to logon to Roll20 before the game (SEE Prep Materials) to choose a Playbook and create a hunter. And that's about all you'll need.
What GM Mr Patrick brings to the table
I will bring the descriptions. Loads and loads of descriptions (though you'll have a chance at doing some of that, too), plus ambient music, imagery, and ... monsters. Lots and lots of monsters.

How GM Mr Patrick creates a safe table
This game will contain horror, gore, and mature themes not suitable for every gamer. That said, the GM likes to keep things PG-13 to Lovecraftian-horror R-Rated. During our character creation we will also talk about, and implement, gaming safety tools such as lines, veils, and the X Card.
