About the adventure

The Yawning Portal: Gateway to the Depths of Undermountain In the bustling heart of Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, rests a tavern that, at first glance, might seem like any other establishment serving ale and camaraderie. Yet, the Yawning Portal holds a secret that plunges deep beneath the city's foundations, a secret that has drawn adventurers and sparked legends for centuries. Named for the gaping, crumbling shaft in its common room, this pit is not merely a curiosity, but the infamous gateway to Undermountain. Above ground, the Yawning Portal is a vibrant hub, where patrons gather to exchange coin, boast of past exploits, and perhaps witness the occasional descent into the abyss. Below, it's the launchpad for unparalleled peril. Only the most intrepid adventurers dare to descend into the seemingly bottomless maw, for at the bottom of that crumbling shaft lies a labyrinthine dungeon shunned by all but the most daring. Undermountain is no mere dungeon; it's a sprawling, multi-level testament to forgotten civilizations, monstrous lairs, and ingenious, deadly traps. Shunned by most and whispered about in hushed tones, its very name conjures images of endless corridors, dark secrets, and untold riches, alongside unimaginable dangers. At the heart of this subterranean enigma is its undisputed, and utterly unpredictable, master: Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage. For centuries, Halaster has dwelt in these forlorn depths, meticulously seeding his lair with a terrifying array of monsters, intricate magical wards, and confounding mysteries. His grand design remains a constant source of speculation and concern throughout Faerûn – just what is the Mad Mage's ultimate goal for this colossal underground domain? For those brave enough to heed the call, the adventure "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage" picks up directly where the urban intrigue of "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" leaves off. Designed to take characters of 5th level all the way to a legendary 20th level, this epic module meticulously details twenty-three immense levels of Undermountain, each a sprawling, unique challenge teeming with unique environments, perilous encounters, and rich lore. And nested within these mind-bending depths lies Skullport, a subterranean city-refuge for rogues, merchants, and opportunists, offering a fleeting moment of respite – or perhaps, just another layer of danger – before plunging deeper into Halaster's domain. Undermountain is more than a dungeon; it's an epic journey into the mind of a mad genius, a test of wit, courage, and perseverance that promises unparalleled glory or a forgotten demise. Are you ready to face the machinations of the Mad Mage and carve your legend into the very stone of Undermountain? The Yawning Portal awaits.

My Journey to the DM's Chair My journey began at the tender age of eleven, when I received the Dungeons and Dragons Red Basic Box set, complete with the Keep on the Borderlands module, as a birthday gift. I poured over those pages, and soon, my childhood friends and I embarked on a summer-long quest. It was then I discovered my true calling: I find immense joy in crafting worlds and watching players' characters grow and evolve within the adventures I present. Since those early days, I've had the privilege of introducing hundreds of new players to the enchanting world of D&D. My expertise isn't limited to a single system; I've run over fifty different role-playing games, from Aliens to Traveler, Rifts to Gamma World, and D&D 1st Edition through to D&D 5th Edition. My Philosophy on Adventures At the heart of my approach is the belief that adventures are about the players – their stories, backgrounds, allies, and adversaries. My materials, whether published or custom-created, serve to guide, support, challenge, and ultimately reward you, the players. Let's Begin Your Epic Adventure! If you're seeking a skilled Professional Game Master for your Dungeons and Dragons game (Basic, Advanced, or 5th Edition), or another beloved RPG system, I invite you to look no further. Don't hesitate to reach out to discuss custom campaigns, form a new group, or explore one of my posted games. Warm regards, Dungeon Master Paul

I will be available on the server 30 minutes before start time for any pre-game Q/A.

Homebrew rules

Table only has one Homebrew Rule all other all other game mechanics as per 2024 Raw Critical Fails/Fumbles: These are essentially the opposite of critical hits. They occur when a roll results in a spectacular failure, often a natural 1 on a d20, and have negative consequences beyond the action's failure. Fumble Tables: These tables are designed to provide a degree of randomness and unpredictability to the consequences of critical fails. They can result in a wide range of outcomes, from minor inconveniences to serious setbacks, depending on the table and the specific action. Application to Characters and Monsters: Fumble tables are used for both player characters (PCs) and non-player characters (NPCs) to add an element of unpredictability and to create more interesting and engaging combat situations. Examples of Table Contents: Fumble tables include outcomes such as: losing an action, being momentarily stunned, tripping, or having a weapon break, even result in the character striking an ally instead of the intended target, adds a layer of comedic or even tragic irony to the game. Stuck Weapon. Your weapon gets stuck in your opponent’s shield, armour, hide, or else in a tree or wall, or the ground. Roll a Strength check to see if you can free it using a bonus action. The DC is 8 + your strength modifier. Slip Up. You lose your footing. Roll Dexterity / Acrobatics check (DC 15) or fall prone. Your turn has ended and melee attacks have advantage on you (see p.292 of PH for conditions of being prone). Slip Up. You lose your footing. Roll Dexterity / Acrobatics check (DC 15) or fall prone.
