Monthly Mythos Mania - Sinister Saturdays

Call of Cthulhu | Campaign

About the adventure

This is a consistent and dedicated monthly group for running Call of Cthulhu one-shot scenarios. Each horror-themed scenario will be completed in a single 3-4 hour session. Want a regular Call of Cthulhu group but can't commit to a weekly campaign? Then this is the post for you. In each monthly session you and your fellow players will investigate a new supernatural mystery. Sometimes you'll be thwarting dark rites and infiltrating cults. Other times the best you can hope for is survival as you fall under the gaze of an unknowable, ancient alien god. What scenarios will we play you ask? That's up to you! I have a ton of scenarios already prepared and others I've had my eye on, and I also want to hear from you! Each month we'll vote on which scenario to play next from Chaosium or the Miskatonic Repository. Games from all settings and rules variations of Call of Cthulhu are fair game. Whether it's the Classic 1920s, Regency, Gaslight, Modern, Pulp, Down Darker Trails, or Sci-Fi, the necessary rules will be taught during the session. So come on down and get your monthly dose of mythos madness!

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Party notes

Sessions will usually take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month. At times they will vary to accommodate player schedules. After each session, we'll spend the next week discussing (including going over content warnings for each scenario) and voting on the one-shot for next month. I'll then spend the next few weeks preparing and building the scenario in Roll20. — June 14 Session: Saturday the 14th

We’ve only had one session so far, but Derek is already proving to be an excellent Keeper. He’s incredibly well-spoken and did a great job bringing the atmosphere to life while giving everyone a chance to contribute and feel included. I personally don’t get bothered easily, but I really appreciated that he provided a consent form—it showed that he’s thoughtful about everyone’s comfort, and it clearly helped set the tone for a safe, respectful game. The group seemed genuinely thrilled by the end of the session, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where the story goes next!

Derek ran a one shot for Call of Cthulhu for us, the Lightless Beacon module and it was a extremely good time for all of us involved. We were all new so Derek made sure to show us the ins and outs of the mechanics. He also made sure to get every one of our inputs, and leave opportunity for the quiet ones to speak if they want to which is very generous.

Derek does an incredible job describing details of events and scenarios, which makes it very easy to picture what's happening in your mind. Very accommodating to new players and does a great job guiding through new mechanics. Had a great time and would gladly play again!

Awesome Keeper. New to Cthulhu but he was very patient and kept the game moving at a good pace

If you are new or experienced to Call of Cthulhu, Derek is the keeper for you! His style is very entertaining avoiding railroading as much as possible. Rarely needs to recheck the rules, always looking for ways to make the game more engaging, I played my first ever game with him and is part of the reason I have decided to become a keeper myself. My favorite part of his style is how he adapts certain aspects of the story to fit more of the dynamic of the investigators.

How to prepare

You'll need to join our Discord server and have a Roll20 account; along with a mic and computer capable of running Roll20.

What I provide

I'll build a new Roll20 game for each monthly session and have all the pregens loaded. Whatever era or rule variant we're using (Classic, Pulp, Regency, Dark Ages, or Down Darker Trails), I'll have all rules ready to go and teach everything needed during play. We'll have a separate Discord channel to discuss and vote on what type of scenario, or even which specific scenario, we'd like to play!

Gameplay details

Breaks - we’ll take a 5-10 minute break halfway through each session X, N, O Cards - can be placed in on-screen text chat (either in the group chat or directly to me), no explanation required. Debrief—The Gamemaster (me) will remain in the voice chat after the game to debrief with players, including (but not limited to) content concerns, explanations of game mechanics, and any further questions or comments.

How will character creation work

Many of the scenarios we play will have pregens, but some may require characters to be made. If pregens are not provided, we'll either create characters offline, or can schedule an extra session for that purpose.
