About the adventure

Welcome to Allmore, a.k.a. the Mad World and the Unruly Realm. It is twenty years after the end of the Clockwork War and the people of the world are still recovering. There has been no centralized government since the last king was killed and anyone trying to take up the vacant throne since has failed. The last king was the one that unleashed the Clockwork Army on the world, so most are cautious to award anyone the dead king's crown. Ever since the war ended, each city has rebuilt and governed itself alone. Every small town has had to beg for help from a nearby city or fend for itself. Too many have been destroyed or taken over by vicious bandit clans. In an effort to try and reestablish safe trade routes, some of the people are starting to call for a new monarch to reconnect the world, but there are many who wish to claim the vacant throne. EDIT/UPDATE(12/3/25, Session 35): The party began as caravan guards from the small town of Esburg. After they successfully returned home from a long and problematic journey, the party decided to stay together. They are currently traveling to collect the four fragments of the Eye of Theelia, an ancient artifact tied to the Elder Goddess of Magic. It once powered the entire Clockwork Army, but has since been broken up and distributed to the four mage colleges of Allmore. Most recently, the party found found their second piece of the relic and they plan to pursue the third after making a stop in the port city of Anchorvine.

About me

I'm a lifelong writer and gamer. I got started with ttrpgs about 5 years ago. Around then I was taking improv classes and someone I met there suggested I try D&D. After that I started listening to podcasts and playing games online and I started putting together my homebrew world. I started filling in maps, writing the world's history, and putting together my own pantheon and after I had the basic rules down I was eager to start DMing. I usually run 5e games in my homebrew setting, but I definitely don't expect anyone to read all of my made-up lore and remember everything every week. If your PC should know something, I'll tell you every time. Worst-case-scenario I have you roll a History check and we go from there. Whenever I get started with a game, I try to talk to everyone before meeting as a group for a session zero. It's up to you how detailed your character's backstory will be, but if you put in the time and effort to write a detailed past I will definitely use what you give me. If you'd rather make a simpler character without much of a past, that's also fine. However things go, each player will get a turn in the spotlight. An adventuring party is an ensemble, not an entourage. While some quests are more personal to some PCs than others, the overall story will be about the group. Most of my groups have been more interested in combat mechanics than RPing, but I try to bring a balance to each game to keep the players happy and keep the plot moving. I also like to record my sessions so I can refer back to them and one of my groups wanted me to share the recordings on YouTube so they could do the same, but I post all of my games as "restricted" so they can watch from links I post on our Discord server. I'm open to posting videos that anyone can watch, but I'd only do that if the whole group was okay with it. Some people prefer their campaigns to be private and I respect that.

Character creation

Creating your character

Everyone will have access to my books on DnDBeyond: PHB, DMG, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. Character Building: We'll do Point Buy or Standard Array, but you can roll for stats as long as you roll in the Roll20 chat or share your screen while rolling on DNDBeyond.

The current party

As the overall plot reveals itself, I'll be including optional quests based on individual character backstories. The more detailed your backstory the more I'll have to work with, but if you prefer to start with something simple we can fill in the details over time.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a mic and a DnDBeyond account with room for your character (I'm pretty sure a free account still gives you 6 character slots). Also, the Beyond20 extension that links DnDBeyond to Roll20 will need to be on your browser. It's a free, quick download and it seems to work seamlessly with Chrome and Firefox. We'll start at Level 1. You'll have access to my sourcebooks when you join the campaign on DnDBeyond, so pick from anything you see and we can go over the details when we talk. (The party is currently level 7.)

What Jim brings to the table

I've been building a campaign on Roll20 for a long time now, so I've got a lot of maps and tokens. I'll do some character voices, but I'll use my natural voice for a lot of NPCs. Combat will be scaled up or down depending on how well the party does. Some fights will be harder or easier by design, but I'll do what I can to balance things out. PC death is rare, but possible. I tend to stick to Rules as Written, but if you come up with something fun or interesting, I'm fine with Rule of Cool on occasion. Lastly, I have a tendency to keep it light and fun when the game allows for it. I like to joke around on occasion and I think players have a little more fun when there's room for humor. That being said, things will get serious at certain parts of the story.

Homebrew rules

Any time something calls for half of a number and it turns out to be an odd number, we'll round up every time. Also, the "Shove" action is available as a Bonus Action. You can shove a creature 5ft as long as they're your size or smaller. The roll will be a contested Athletics check.

How Jim creates a safe table

We've got an accepting group and often we joke around at the table. I make a private Discord channel for each player in case you want to talk to me about anything one-on-one. So far we haven't really had any issues between players. We've had a few people join and then later leave, but that's usually been because of scheduling conflicts.
