Savage Worlds: Learn to Play!

Savage Worlds | One-Shot

About the adventure

Have you always wanted to give Savage Worlds a try, but either you don't know how to play, or you just aren't sure it's for you? Then this is game you're looking for. In this one-night, one-shot game, I will teach you how to play Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (known as SWADE), help you create a fantasy character, then guide you through a simple scenario where you can put your newfound knowledge into action. This is a FREE session, so you can learn and try out the system without worrying about spending money on something you aren't even sure you're going to enjoy. There's no risk here! I will run this "class" multiple times, so if you miss the exact session you want, you won't have missed out entirely. I will run this session monthly, on the first Saturday of the month, so if you are interested but can't make the next session, there are other opportunities. And as always, if you have any questions, you can message me directly!

We were playing a learning one shot, so keep in mind that that is the framework for the ideas presented here. To cover the basic, more universal, things first. I found that Mikey did a great job running the oneshot and was well prepared. Things went smoothly and I feel like even if I had been brand new to everything, the system, the VTT, etc. he had the skill to make sure that I could navigate and do what I needed to do which is great for beginners in whatever element you're a beginner in. Now on to the more individual things. I enjoyed talking to him and having him as a GM. The degree to which you get along with someone depends on both people and fine people can fail to click, so I can't tell you that you will absolutely love him as a universal truth, but I can tell you I enjoyed him. I can tell you that he was personable and patient. It was a oneshot, so I don't actually have tons of games under my belt with him, but I left the session feeling like I would enjoy playing with him long term and like we both loved much of the same things about the game we were playing. In this case, it was Savage Worlds with its fast and fun system and having fun with tropes. I may update if I end up playing a longer term game, if only to reaffirm that experience demonstrates that my thought was accurate, but even if I don't, I feel confident in saying that I had fun playing with him.

Mikey took me through character creation, explaining and helping me choose hindrances, edges, and skills. We talked about what would be useful and what would not for my character. Then we ran a short scenario where I could get used to the Savage Worlds system, the combat, and asking questions. He was knowledgeable and patient. From his description of events and the scene I could see exactly what the situation was and what options were available. I would definitely play with Mikey again and would highly recommend him. He's an outstanding GM!

Mikey welcomed me as a newbie to this system and had both been receptive to my characters and helped me grow while teaching me a new system set in an awesome world. If you want to try a savage worlds game with a DM who loves his craft then look no further

Very educated and seasoned GM, and it's apparent to me even as someone who is new to TTRPGs in general. Communicated effectively to us before session, and during the session went over each and every necessary detail, and answered anything that we had questions about or gave tips on things that could be helpful. He made the session fun, we all had laughs, and definitely leaned into the rule of cool while still abiding by the rules. Definitely made me excited for the Savage Worlds system, and I'm confident he would GM other systems very well. Looking forward to joining a future game of his!

Mikey showed myself and several other newbies how to play Savage Worlds. He was polite, patient, explained everything well and was good fun. I had a great time learning to play and we covered an impressive amount in quite a short period of time - with everything being illustrated with a "show, don't tell" attitude to learning. We had alot of laughs too. Really impressed with his Foundry setup as well! I would love to play a game run by Mikey, and so should you!

Mikey is a great DM. He takes the time to walk the players through the mechanics of the game. I like how he blends real world ideas and concepts into the game settings. He's willing to listen to your idea to make the game that much more enjoyable and even if it's not he'll still tell you it's a cool idea. His style of play is great and the session about how to play Savage Worlds is great for those who are looking for a new system to try. Highly recommend to those looking for a world class DM.

How to prepare

Make sure you've got a working microphone and a steady internet connection! I will be keeping my camera on; although I encourage my players to have their cameras on as well (for many reasons), it is NOT a requirement. You do not need to know the rules; I'll teach them. You do not need to make a character; I'll walk you through it.

What I provide

We will use Foundry VTT for the game, but Discord for voice. Links will be provided to registered players. Remember, this is a Learn to Play session, so if you are already quite comfortable with Savage Worlds, this may not be the session for you. But if you are a novice, if you've never played Savage Worlds, or if you have played it but still don't quite *get* it... I'm here to help you learn this award-winning roleplaying system!

Gameplay details

Although this is a one-night, one-shot play session, that doesn't mean player safety isn't considered important! Since there is no campaign or storyline, the likelihood of triggering situations is small... but not non-existent. For this session style, I will keep an open-door policy: any player can, at any time, and for any reason, step away; for a minute, for an hour, or for the night. No justifications needed, no recriminations, no consequences. In addition, I will reserve the right to call for a break (and any player should feel free to do the same) if I see indications that anyone present may need one and for some reason isn't able to call for one themselves.
