About the adventure

You take your first step into a famous tavern in a city called Waterdeep. The sounds of merriment in progress, song, talk, spoon on dish, and, above all, calls for more wine and ale and things you've never heard of greet you. Glancing around, you see a large pit in the center of the tavern. Standing around it are several people. From their garb, they can only be adventurers like yourself. And, also like you, new to this life and eager to begin. From a chance encounter with a writer of self-admitted fame, you are drawn into an ever-increasing web of intrigue and danger. It soon becomes a race to find…well, you’re not sure yet what you’re hunting. But the clock is ticking! Any player level welcome, new players, experienced players, don't matter me. We're all here to have a good time. I like players who get involved. Sure, when you're new to the game, that can be a little intimidating. But I'll be happy to work with you. The more you invest, the more you'll get out of it. That's my philosophy. Session 0 will be a free session.

About me

As a player, I like good role-playing opportunities with a fair dose of combat and problem solving. And that’s what I bring as a DM. If that’s you, you’ve found a home. I’m Dungeon Master Jason and I want to be your DM. I love to write and read and get creative with what I create and what you create. Weaving your backstory, your goals, into the campaign, merging your creativity with mine, that is ambrosia for me. I want to do everything I can to help you wring all the enjoyment possible out of your gaming time. I have house rules (who doesn’t 😊) but the Rule of Cool is alive and well in my house. The heart of Dungeons and Dragons is the collaborative story-telling between the DM and the players. Let’s create something amazing together. Let's all get wet together!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be discussed in Session 0 but the details are also on my Discord server. We will be using D&D 5e 2014/Legacy rules so please be sure to scroll down to those options when picking options for Background, Class, Race, etc. There are some pre-made characters available in the D&D Beyond Campaign page. Just click the "Create unassigned premade character" link. From the list, choose one you like. Just be sure it is not a 2024 character (the ones that are say so). There are also some pre-made characters I created. First come, first serve. Characters need to be made in the D&D Character Creation tool. You can roll two sets of characteristics and pick the one you like the best. If you both are truly horrendous, reach out to me and we will see what we can do.

The current party

NOTE: The campaign is using 2014/Legacy rules. If you are creating your own character, please be sure to scroll down to the Legacy and/or Expanded sections when choosing Class, Race/Species and Background. Spell casters be sure to choose the legacy version of any spells.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to have accounts on D&D Beyond, Discord and The Forge. All are free. There are links to sign up for both D&D Beyond and The Forge on my Discord server. In Discord, you will need a microphone and headset to participate in the game.

What Jason brings to the table

The games will be played on Foundry VTT and I've got most of the sourcebooks for D&D Beyond. NOTE that we are using the Legacy (2014) rules so when creating your character (if you don't use a pre-made one), be sure to scroll down to the legacy/2014/ items when choosing Class, Race/Species and Background. Spellcasters be sure to choose the legacy version of any spells. I won't terrorize your ears with voices, at least not often. Ambient sounds and music, though, that I love. I also make extensive use of some of Foundry's cool tricks to help with the mood. Hopefully, the combats will be exciting and fun with the right amount of danger to the characters. Feel free, encouraged even, to role-play the combat. We will still be rolling dice but there's a big difference between "George swings his mace at the orc." and "Twisting away from the orc's spear thrust, George spins back, mace already descending in a vicious arc at the orc's head." I will reward good role-play. I will do my best to foster an atmosphere of fun for all. Courtesy and respect will be required of all participants.

Homebrew rules

Healing Potions: Drink as bonus action Surprise: During the first round of combat, take no Action of any type or a Bonus Action. Take no Reaction until end of first round. Counterspell: Works as in 2014 version. There are additional House Rules in the House Rules channel on my Discord server.
