About the adventure

An evil god has been revealed to be only semi-immortal, a lich with connections to mortality in the form of phylacteries. Five vaults must be cracked, razed, and checked off your list. But will the lich catch on to you first? This game uses a setting similar to standard D&D, with elevated humor, visceral narrative detail, and an emphasis on the rule of cool. Rules experts are welcome, so long as they are more interested in the DM making a ruling that is outside the box! There will be a free Session Zero so we can all get on the same page!

About me

Hi there! I'd love to be your Game Master. Maybe you know me as a comedian who has been on television, known for elaborate improvisation. I've been a cast member of the Dungeons & Dragons podcast Nerd Poker since 2014, where I have woven entire continents. Plus I've created monsters, mechanics, and stories for D&D itself. As Narrative Lead of Cortex RPG I co-adapted Netflix's The Dragon Prince into the game Tales of Xadia. I've adapted tabletop games for Mattell, DC Comics, and more. I've been Senior Editor at MAD Magazine and Managing Editor of The Onion. Oh, and one time I sang background vocals on They Might Be Giants' cover of Tubthumping.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will discuss during Session Zero. Players will be encouraged to not worry about team balance, I would rather adapt certain challenges so that if everyone wants to be the same class you can all go hog wild with that dream!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a webcam! Microphones and headphones are highly encouraged, but exceptions can be made. Because I have ADHD, sorting out ambient sound and distractions can be difficult for me. Please make an effort to ensure you are in a private room with minimal distractions, and that you do not have the echo associated with not using headphones. Players unable to find private spaces or headphones may occasionally be asked to pause to try and improve their setup, as politely as possible. No guilt or shame needed! It's truly related to ADHD, and not my ego.

What Dan brings to the table

D&D Beyond content sharing, Roll20 combat maps, and video over either Google Meet or Discord (other options may be considered on request). My background is in improv, joke writing, and narrative development. I also have 15+ years of experience as a comedy instructor. I will do my very best to make every session delightful above all else. This means the emphasis will be on your choices, not my plot, and I am open to things going far off the rails as long as everyone is enjoying the ride. I ask every player to respect basic inclusivity and trigger guidelines. We will all be as open about triggers as possible. While the content will have horror elements, the goal is fun and not "bleed" or real-life trauma. While not all safety tools are checked, I am open to adopting anything not listed. I am a CPTSD survivor, alcohol-free, non-binary, and generally squishy and mindful in real life. In contrast, my games can have intense elements as a source of catharsis. I never want to have all the fun, please communicate your needs and I will do my best to keep the tone enjoyable for everyone at the table. Absolutely no phobic behavior will be tolerated. The game will not include any deliberate racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, or queer hatred of any kind. This may be subject to immediate removal from the game. If it occurs unintentionally all efforts will be made to make players comfortable with healing and progressing with the game.

Safety

How Dan creates a safe table

Session Zero will involve tone, story setup, and character creation. Players will be encouraged to send all potential triggers to me before Session One, though this can always be ongoing. Breaks will occur every 60 or 90 minutes depending on overall session length. Aftercare and other trigger-related safety tools will occur at the ends of sessions, primarily at player request.
