[PBP][Beginner][SKT]Treachery Amongst Giants - Play By Post!

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Do you want the flexibility to play this game at any time during the week with busy schedules? Are you anxious about roleplaying in front of others? A Play By Post game may be the type for YOU! Hosted on a dedicated and organized Discord Channel you can hop on your mobile phone and play via text any time of the day. This campaign will be played via PBP on a Dedicated Discord channel, utilizing (at your option) Avrae through D&D Beyond! Join me and craft a customizable story where your characters are the Heroes! Adventure throughout the Sword Coast on a realm-spanning quest! Discover Magical Items and Artifacts designed to help you in your quest! Slay, or Befriend, Giants and learn of the troubles around the Ordning! Protect the people of the Sword Coast and Discover the Plight of the Giants! Become Saviors of Giants and Smaller Folks alike! This game does follow the WOTC module Storm King Thunder which is a fairly open world module set in the Sword Coast region. Player actions will impact the story and world around them! Is your character from Neverwinter and wants to visit family during a lull in the action? Sure thing. Downtime is possible. Did you want to build a huge temple to your Deity in town? Yup, we can do that. Construct a large fortress in the hills nearby Triboar? Absolutely. Spend downtime crafting magic weapons with the harvested fur from a Manticore? Go for it. Pursue all the "side" quests? Yes! This game style will be MOST rewarding for those who love to tell a good story and want a forgotten realms experience. While this is a Play-by-Post (PBP), I will still be providing character artwork to those interested and will still be providing module and custom handouts/maps for locations. These will be posted to the discord.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Recruiting notes

Looking forward to meeting new folks and getting this game started! The other player has already run through a prologue chapter customized to their PC and we are patiently awaiting folks to join up! When you sign up I'll ask some questions about your pbp and ttrpg experience, then I'll accept your request!

Dungeon Doug is an exceptional DM, delivering one of the most immersive and enjoyable D&D experiences ever. His storytelling is masterful, weaving rich drama, compelling characters, and engaging narratives into every session. The pacing is always spot-on—precisely balancing moments of tension, humour, and reflection. Doug’s deep understanding of the rules and willingness to adapt for the story's sake create a seamless gameplay experience. He knows when to stick to the mechanics and when to bend them slightly, ensuring the game is both fun and immersive. His adaptability makes every moment feel meaningful and dynamic. What truly stands out is Doug’s sense of drama and humour and his ability to lighten the mood without breaking immersion. Above all, Doug is attentive and collaborative, making the game feel like a true partnership. He ensures players feel heard, valued, and central to the story, creating a deeply rewarding experience for everyone involved. Whether you’re new to D&D or a seasoned player, I can’t recommend Dungeon Doug enough. His campaigns are an absolute delight, and you’ll eagerly await every session!

A great PBP DM that gets invested in his games, best for players that like to put a good amount of thought and personality into their characters. Responsive and communicative. Descriptive and considerate writer. Great at keeping the game active and not allowing it to stall. All you could ask for in a PBP DM really.

As soon as I found start playing I joined a couple of games to experience the site as a paying customer before hosting games myself, I hadn’t planed to be a player to long (I usually prefer to be the dm) but I was lucky enough to choose Doug’s Dragon of Icespire peek campaign. I was surprised by how much fun I had as a player IN HIS game, and we’ve been playing for over a year now. Doug kept a fairly simple pre-written adventure for low level characters interesting and fresh (even for an old timer like myself). He has always been fair and consistent with rules (mostly as written) while still acknowledging “the rule of cool” when appropriate for the situation. When we’ve done unexpected things he still provided a fun game without limiting our options, while still keeping the adventure on track. As a long time game master myself, I know that isn’t always easy lol He’s been a great GM (I don’t give that compliment lightly) I would definitely recommend Doug if your looking for your next DM!

Doug is one of the best GMs I've had the pleasure of playing with, and you can absolutely tell that he cares so much about the game and his players. While most of the time that I've struggled finding DMs that don't "inadvertently" punish their players for being nontraditional, but Doug's been more than willing to indulge in my shenanigans and make it a rich part of the world.

Dungeon Doug is very invested in his games and you as a player. He is always reaching out to make sure that you personally have fun and finds creative ways to implement your character into his custom games. He is very knowledgeable about the game but at the same time, he is always open to creative ideas and lets the game go whether it screws up his initial plan or not which is very rare in a DM. He goes through your backstory and makes cool side quests for them which inevitably progresses through the campaign. He is one of my favorite DMs and I highly recommend him.

How to prepare

Never played D&D? A veteran of many games? Never heard of Play By Post? Doesn't Matter! Just make sure to take the link and follow it to the Discord Channel. Here's what YOU need : 1. A computer OR Mobile Phone. They need to be able to access Discord! 2. Good Internet 3. NO headset needed! 4. A Discord account - FREE 5. D&D Beyond Account - FREE (in order to use the Avrae plugin) Lastly. You should prepare to use your imagination to create AWESOME fun! Creativity is rewarded and can really make for fun memories!

What I provide

I will provide you with an in-depth roleplaying and D&D experience through the week via the Discord channel. Posting volume will depend on the players who settle in and our session zero. Generally we will post at least once per day with flurries of activity during certain scenes. I will moderate pacing to ensure no-one is left behind or takes over a scene. The discord channel is a safe-place and all players are respected and able to be comfortable. You may choose to interact with others in my community on discord, or stick to this game's channel. This well-organized PBP game will be available at all times of the day on Discord. It is up to players how they wish to keep their character sheets. D&D Beyond is likely easiest due to the Avrae plugin for discord. However, if keeping a paper sheet makes you happy, go for it! I will periodically request sheets so please have them available, especially at level ups! All Characters may have artwork generated for them by me to your specifications. The number one rule and goal of this game is to ensure that everyone has FUN! So I will ensure you are able to have fun! More detailed rules will be found in the discord channel. All players are assumed to have read and abide by these rules in order to play.

Gameplay details

D&D 5e is a team-based story-telling game with a lot of improvisation involved. Therefore, it is impossible to list ALL themes that may surface. However, within this game you should anticipate the following on a relatively consistent basis: - Fantasy violence with mild to moderate description of gore (PG-13/lite R), Mild Language. Gameplay may utilize some optional rules. Major additions are: Heliana's Guide to Monsters version of Harvesting, Crafting, and Tracking, and Strongholds & Followers rules on Strongholds. There are some minor optional rules that will be discussed in the Session Zero thread on Discord! The Module is designed and written for 2014 5e D&D. IF players wish to create their characters using 2024 5e Rules that *is* permissible; however, I will be running primarily using 2014 ruleset. I will sprinkle in player selected rules/additions from 2024 where possible, and at request only. Rules can be customized to an extent. Even though this is PBP, death can still occur, it shouldn't be ignored. Rule of Cool for fun's sake is always acceptable, but is at DM discretion. Roleplay will be possible with any NPCs or with any Sidekicks. Combat is kept quick and fluid to the best of my ability to keep it interesting at all times. Since PBP with a small player group, it will still follow 5e initiative rules with occasional tweaks for narrative purposes. Maps will be provided where relevant and necessary.

How will character creation work

We will create your character together in the discord through the first week of play. Players may select 2014 or 2024 rules when creating their PC. We MAY run a prologue scenario for your character if we have a small group to start. Characters will begin at level 1 and Races/Classes from WOTC and several third party books are available. Homebrew is accepted upon review and approval by DM. Have a character CONCEPT in mind for session zero is recommended but not required. We can talk it through!
