Mirror, Mirror - D&D in the Multiverse

Mirror, Mirror - D&D in the Multiverse

Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Homebrew Game | Campaign

About the adventure

Strange travelers have arrived from far-flung worlds, drawn into thin spots, places where the line between realities blurs. Will they attempt to solve the mystery of these portals? Or use them to their own ends? -- In the sewers beneath the bog town of Helix, there is an ancient secret: a place where you can slip into another world. -- In an enchanted castle where not all the fairy tales end happily ever after, staring into the mirror, you see it. A flicker of movement at the edge of your vision. What lies beyond the looking glass? -- The bullets whistle overhead and you dive into the foxhole. But when you splash into the water, you keep falling. And falling. -- The artificial intelligence's voice is soothing... but what it's saying, isn't. "Portal open, Jack." You can hear your heart beating. You take a breath and step in. -- Play a character from a fantasy realm, the past, an alternate reality, or the future. Everything finds its way into the Long Line... eventually. Find your way out. Find your way home... or spend the rest of your life wandering the farthest flung reaches of the planes. This game is a game about planar (trans-dimensional) wanderers. Mechanically we will twist and turn the game to fit whatever characters you might imagine, while using the skeleton of 5e for the sake of accessibility to the millions of people who already know how to play. You might choose to try to map the long line, figure out why it's there, or adventure in any one of hundreds of locations. Mysteries will slowly unfold as you try to find your way home or conquer the planes. Though the characters will start at a low level (2-3), they may quickly be able to find powerful items from futuristic or highly-magical places. Every plane has multiple factions, and the Long-Line itself (the mysterious megadungeon that has portals throughout the D&D planes and beyond) has mysteries and factions to unwrap, ally with, betray, or champion as well. Since each character is from their own reality, we will work collaboratively to bring that reality to life, either as a rich backstory or as an play location that we travel to. I will defer to your descriptions of how your world works so we can bring your characters and their worlds to life. Inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower series, Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass, Transdimensional Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the MCU's Multiverse, Mirror Mirror is not to be missed. I have successfully run versions of this campaign for players as young as 10 and will adjust the content as needed to fit our players.

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

GM Danny understands that the point of the game is that everyone is having fun. He encourages creative play but always keeps the game moving. He knows the rules and when to bend them. I have played games I know and games that were brand new and in both cases, I felt like I was in good hands. I've only ever had great experiences playing with Danny and look forward to the next game!

Dan was an incredible GM who was easy to work with and helped guide our game's session without feeling like he was forcing us in a certain direction or hand holding our characters and making our decisions for us. Dan is a great GM and i would definitely choose to play in his games again.

Dan is probably the best DM i've played with!

Dan is excellent at maintaining the balance between upholding the rules and making sure that creative solutions are allowed and rewarded. He knows the rules, so gameplay is quick, without frequent pauses to check the rules, and he's excellent at telling stories and improvising when the party inevitably picks a direction he wasn't expecting. Highly recommended.

How to prepare

Mic - required. Camera - recommended. Discord should be downloaded since we'll use the video chat on discord. Roll20 will be used for maps and tokens. You can also set up your character on Roll20 if you like. You should be familiar with D&D in general and your character's skills and abilities, but we can work together to get you up to speed if needed.

What I provide

I typically run games on Roll20. Active players get access to about $1000 worth of books on dndbeyond. I use maps from czepeku and have hundreds of RPG books spanning the last 50 years of RPG history. We will spend a bit of time setting up custom tokens and avatars if you like, as well. I do character voices and use voice changers. I have used music in the past and may use it again depending on the exact technical solutions we use to play. Combats can be unfair, unbalanced, generally terrible and sometimes have unforeseen consequences. Overall I try to have a 'combat as war' mentality rather than 'combat as sport' but we can adjust things to players' desires. I avoid 'precious encounter' design that is rigorously balanced in favor of situational combats that have environmental elements that can tip the scales in one way or the other. https://www.enworld.org/threads/very-long-combat-as-sport-vs-combat-as-war-a-key-difference-in-d-d-play-styles.317715/ In general, I will call out when I know I am making a deviation from rules-as-written. (E.g. "As you slip off the cliff, as written, the rules indicate that you immediately fall 500 feet. However, since you have short swords in your hands, I will give you a dex saving throw to see if you can arrest your fall either at the top or partway down.") If people disagree with the deviation we can discuss immediately. If I don't immediately know or cannot access the rule-as-written quickly I will make a ruling. I will be as transparent as possible when I make rulings, but overall, my approach is to make a ruling quickly and keep the pace of the game up. If I made a mistake, we can review between sessions and revise the approach going forward. If the ruling was more favorable to players, I will correct things going forward, but I won't take any sort of punitive action. If the ruling was overly harsh on players, this can result in inspiration, additional items, or retcons. All of that being said, the characters are the heroes of the story, so if you have a cool concept for a character, we will do what we can to make it work. It may be multiple drafts of homebrewed items or reflavored spells, but we will make it work.

Gameplay details

- I will provide a link to a shared lines and veils document. - We cover safety tools in session zero, and talk a bit about character cohesion as well as thematic elements you wish to be emphasized with your character. -X, N, O cards are used digitally, or on camera. This may lead to additional lines and/or veils being established. -We will take at least one break through the session for bio needs, but players can request breaks at any time. -It is unlikely that we will encounter all of the content warnings, but NPCs who engage in most of the behaviors listed will be bad guys. Overthrowing fascist governments has been a big pastime of many previous players of this campaign. - We will use Stars and Wishes or Roses, Buds, and Thorns to help me guide the game in the right direction so that everyone is happy.

How will character creation work

Come with a character concept. You can use 30 points to do point-buy or roll 4d6 drop lowest in front of the group. Alternately you can use this array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 and 10. Official Books: Any official 1st party content, homebrew needs approval. Starting level: 2. You can use dndbeyond to create a character if you like, if you need access to books I will provide at session zero. Since the conceit of the campaign is that the PCs are planar travelers, new players can quite literally drop into the campaign - we will do an abbreviated session zero and play the rest of the session as normal.
