About the adventure

Lurking at the margins of the modern world, the creatures of legend, myth, and fairytale prey on the unwary. Parents confidently assure their children that there cannot be a monster under their bed. When someone does see something impossible, they have the grace to forget about it as swiftly as possible. Your characters are those who decided not to forget. As members of the secretive Grimm Society, you know that all the fairytale monsters are real - and it is your job to research, hunt, and kill them. On the very best nights, you even bring the victim safely home... ***** Inspirations for this game include classic Heroes vs. Monster-of-the-week TV series like Buffy: the Vampire Slayer or X-Files, and modern urban fantasy novels such as the Dresden Files, while existing in its own setting. Adventures will include mystery, exploration, horror, and trying to fight back against far more powerful forces. The current main antagonist the party is facing is the Disney Corporation, who siphon power from their revisionist storytelling to become immortal. Come help us fight off the predations of the "Big Mouse"!

About me

I tripped and fell over GMing when I ran a "3-month" 7th Sea campaign at the end of college that is still going today, 16 years later. I've run several other campaigns and a whole ton of convention one-shots, including games at the convention I helped run for a number of years. I'm a professional GM because gaming is the most fun thing I can imagine doing for money! and because I want to share my skills with more people. Collaborative storytelling is a powerful way to enjoy life and transform ourselves, and I think everyone should do it. One of my favorite things is introducing new players to role-playing, so reach out if you're a newbie in need of mentoring! Especially because my games often run toward more intense themes, making sure everyone is enjoying themselves and feeling safe is a huge priority. At my tables we talk about triggers ahead of time and work through interpersonal conflict as often as we can. That said, people just interested in spreading hurtful stereotypes are not welcome to stay. LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent GM welcoming all your identities, especially the marginalized ones. Outside of gaming, I'm a Pagan spiritual leader, singer, parent of 4, and avid gardener. What amazing stories will we tell together?

Character creation
Creating your character

We build character ideas collaboratively over Discord, then write the characters themselves at Session 0, either with the group or at an individual Session 0 if you're joining mid-campaign.

The current party

We are delighted to have you join our supportive, international table for some delicious fairytale horror. Due to the episodic nature of this campaign, new heroes fold in easily. Make sure to join in enough time for us to schedule a 30-60 minute (depending on your familiarity with the system) Session 0 with me. If you're joining closer to the start of the next session than that, your first session will be the following week. There are more than a dozen playbooks (hero types) available with plenty of room for customization to build the perfect character for you.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

A good mic and webcam help a lot! We want to build relationships, ideally friendships, and for me at least, seeing faces helps with that so much. A Discord account is also key: we coordinate between sessions in a private channel on my server, Oaksong Games (join here: https://discord.gg/639G9N9SpV) and run sessions on the server as well. Bring a few six-sided dice or your favorite online dice-roller to sessions.

What Connor brings to the table

I am a narrative-focused GM who builds a story collaboratively with all the players. I love to fold in your ideas to make the world more rich and compelling. While often using Theater of the Mind for maximum adaptability, I supplement with excellent visuals, skillful voice acting, a virtual tabletop maps and minis, and way too many years studying world mythology! I also provide my conflict resolution training, teaching background, and many years of professional leadership facilitating groups. I help new and shy players be heard in the group and encourage more confident players to make space for everyone. At my games, we fold in many practices for the sake of inclusivity. We usually have cameras on so that we can read one another's facial cues. We take stretch breaks every session. We use the last few minutes to discuss the session, sharing feedback every time. I'm always ready to hear what you need for this space to be inclusive of your needs, and I thrive on player feedback.

How Connor creates a safe table

I use narrative systems like Monster of the Week because they are easy to learn and adapt to our ideas. I'm excellent at teaching new systems, so don't worry if you've never played this one before. You'll be ready to go in no time! I'm also delighted to welcome experienced MotW players who are excited about this story. At all of my tables, we practice emotional safety as absolutely essential. When we do get into disagreements or step on one another's toes, I will help guide us to a graceful resolution so that everyone feels safe and heard before diving back into our story. Players who aren't interested in supporting one another's emotional well-being will need to find another game. Emotional well-being is doubly important for my horror games, including this one. Please look over the list of likely triggers for this campaign. There are a lot of them - just like in classic Fairytales. If any of the triggers below are difficult territory for you, reach out to make sure this campaign will meet your needs.
